but No1 is Hendrix. He was still the genius when he died. And he really was a musical genius.

If rock is defined a little wider, Marleys & Tosh's tragic
deaths in the 80s was quite a loss.

rock includes otis? i thought otis was a soul singer?

if we include otis we got to include sam cooke....

i mean if we broaden rock to include all music, which is what i see on this thread, then we have to include nick drake too.. jeff buckley...

i'm often suprrised about all the broohaha about buddy holly..his music is so tame..so easy listening... anyone actually listen to songs like peggy sue? the sound is NOT rockin'!

for me bon scott was a huge loss.... the stuff he would have done... i hate to think about it...

i don't know leonard keringer.. i mean compare the buddy holly to little richard/chuck berry and all those guys with that rockin' new orleans sound or even elvis' first two rca lps (1254 and 1392 or some such) and buddy holly is not as rockin'....i collect lps and i've purchased some buddy holly here and there and when i put it on it does not rock to my mind..it sounds really tame actually

again, i'm nobody... i'm glad buddy holly influenced a lot of people but i mean i have peggy sue in my head and the "peggy sue uh uh my peggy sue" sounds kinda gay to me..

i put on a fats domino record and thats rockin'..

like i said even elvis rocks more... or jerry lee lewis..

not sure what the buddy holly thing is.. maybe i need to listen to it more but maybe it is a lot of marketing and myth making....the sensitive white young rocker..but how rockin was he really?

i do love that keith quote about comparing buddy and elvis with the ladies..

true enough Stoned in DC....there were wilder rockers.....buddy was more of a jangly pop tunesmith/performer.........ps it's supposed to be "sounds gay to me (not that there's anything wrong with that)"

I have a hard time calling many of these truly great people, artists 'losses'. Isuspect that original Q means "Who do we miss the most?" I have seen so many names I had forgotten about. EG Richard Manuel, Ronnie Lane and Marriott, Kosoff,Mick Ronsosn, Berry Oakley, (no one mentioned) Jimmy Miller.
But the one thing I agree with that is a real loss is the loss of attitude that I think radioMarv wrote. Rockers have either mellowed out, become WAY too PC, or put on this fake MTV-ized tough-guy-act. Like Motley Crue. there are way too little true rockers out there with a genuine @#$%&-all attitude. Everytinme we see sonmeone come down the pike sooner or later they are bending over to the allmighty dollar.

"...no longer shall you trudge 'cross my peaceful mind."
