if If You Can't Rock Me doesn't rock you . . .

. . . nothing will. Seriously, this is the warhorse that never was! Open shows with it this fall! And yes, that's an order . . .

Yes!

Like Rocks Off, a warhorse that never was!

This is a perfect opener. In fact, I'm pretty sure it was solely designed by NASA scientists for that reason only

as usual, the NASA scientists miscalculated, though; they thought that a non-warhorse could open a show.

p.s. you're damn right Rocks Off is another warhorse that never was . . .

Neither If You Can't Rock Me nor One Hit would be a good opener.

You need something recognisable.

Hard to grasp maybe, but I think the audiance is not made out of people who necessarily bought Dirty Work. That could have worked in '89 but not anymore.

I think the limit to non-warhorse recognisable songs for the larger audiance is Voodoo Lounge, which most of the audiance or their parents will have bought. Some non-warhorse songs from the 60's might ring a bell as well (like As tears go by, It's all over now, or Not fade away).

The reason people say IYCRM or One Hit would be great openers are their killing opening riffs. But if for some reason this will fail, which even tends to happen with JJF, it will leave people in wonder (especially One Hit).

A surprising new opener that would work would be Sympathy (a Charlie/Mick opener like in '94) or Paint it black. I'd go for the latter, although Keith would have to prolong the opening over the initial audiance cheering... after which Charlie Bigger Bangs the show open.

They played it a lot during Licks.

Hi erikjjf!!

They played it in Europe to!

It would be a great opener but maybe it is better as a second song.

Cheers,
Wuudy

You are right. It was played at many more North American shows.
They still played it at least 10 times in Europe, mostly in arenas but also at some stadium shows (Berlin, Leipzig...).

IYCRM never sounded better than the live 1975 (2nd, 1976) version(s), including the album version. Fascinating sound, energy and drive! And solo.

Agree, nikkibong. The riff is one of Keith's best, IMO.

If You Can't Rock Me is something similar to You Got Me Rockin'; nice riffs but nothing essential, the lyrics are quite boring and the sound of the studio version (as the complete IORR album) lacks a bit of tightness.
Rocks Off is way way better, a much better song that Start Me Up or Tumblin' Dice I think.

I was making love last night

Priceless

much preferred it on Licks (a nice surprise and a welcome return to the setlist) than on 1975-76..never cared for that medley with GOOOMC..thought it was a waste of two good songs

On Licks it was nice the way they used it as the first song with the video screens..with the shots of all 4 band members coming up on the screen before Jagger sang that "the bands on stage" opening line. Wonderful stuff

bad arrangement on licks versions... dont like the sung emphasis added to the last half of each chorus line, got old very quick.

loved it on licks - a welcome return of the wah-wah effect, rarely heard these days. and I completely disagree with the notion you need a well-known song as the opener. You need a good rock'n'roll song played well. IYCRM could easily fill that bill.......

theyve even opened with YGMR on the last tour a couple of times fer Gawdsake

You dont need a well known song as an opener. At the start of a gig, everyone's going nuts with excitement anyway - they could bounce onto the stage and play "autobahn", "the sound of music" or "the 1812 overture" for all it matters

I love it as a second song like in 75/76 and same on the licks tour. I think the second is just as important if not more than the Opener.

Great song indeed. Don't think it's strong enough to be a warhorse but it's one of their greatest anyway. Thew were so into it when they were playing it on the Licks Tour and they played it quite a bit, I wish they would play it again every now and then.
