Let's Hire the Stones ala Gazza :-O

Taking the ball thrown by GAZZA, in Dr Pete's thread 'Stones and Walmart??' with his suggestion of hiring Hyde park for a fans-funded Stones show with a 'fan request voted set-list,' is this such a ludicrous idea?

Aerosmith fans in Japan have, through the official Japanese Aerosmith fan club there, organised shows exclusively for holders of fan club memberships on more than one tour.
I don't quite know who it works but the venue deposit is probably raised through fans donating an agreed ticket price in advance.

If they can do it, why can't Stones fans in the UK/Europe.

Looking at this from a purely hypothetical, not necessarily realistic logistical angle, we ask the official Stones website (I know, I know. but who else could be trusted to administer the moneys given by fans), to act as the holding agent for fan's ticket donations.
If tickets were £80, Hyde Park with a potential capacity of 120,000 would raise £9,600,000.
This would cover the band fee, stage and PA set-up costs, venue security, event operational insurance and other ancillary costs.

Does anyone know if this could equate with anything remotely realistic cost wise?

Ok, if Gazza does the negotiation with Cohl.

I don't think Stones would be comfortable with the idea of being hired by fans with a setlist they are forced to do.

I'm not sure I actually 'suggested' it, but thanks for the credit..LMAO

Great idea, the fan setlist would turn out as follows:

Jumping Jack Flash
It's Only Rock'n Roll
Oh No Not You Again
Bitch
Sway
Streets Of Love
Midnight Rambler
Tumbling Dice
--- Introductions
Slipping Away (Keith)
Before They Make Me Run (Keith)
Miss You (to B-stage)
Rough Justice
Start Me Up
Honky Tonk Women (to main stage)
Sympathy For The Devil
Paint It Black
Brown Sugar
You Can't Always Get What You Want (encore)
Satisfaction (encore)

We could get a setlist free of war-horses.
Here's a realistic suggestion:

1. Introduction of the band
2. Under The Boardwalk
3. You Got Me Rocking
4. Blinded By Love
5. Winning Ugly
6. Back To Zero
7. Indian Girl
8. My Girl
9. Any Way You Look At It (Keith and Mick on vocals)
10. Real Hard Rocker (Ronnie on vocals)
11. Oh No, Not You Again (Chuck on vocals...Mick on tambourine)
12. I Go Wild (moves over to B stage, at "speakers corner")
13. Cool, Calm And Collected (B-stage)
14. You Got Me Rocking (B-stage)
15. I'm Allright (return to main-stage)
16. Try A Little Harder

17. Always Suffering (encore)
18. Please Go Home (encore)

Not sure how realistic this is, though if there was enough money they would surely do it. It'd have to be a smaller venue than Hyde Park I think. How many stonesfreaks are there? Knowing this would be a good starting point for estimating ticket costs and deciding a venue.

I wonder if the principle would work best when trying to persuade the Stones (Mick) to release material from the vault? I'm sure a big concern of theirs would be the financial viability of doing this, so if enough of us raised the money up front (maybe like a shares issue) it would guarantee a decent return to the Stones. Any excess profit could be shared between Stones & shareholders; if it sells almost nothing it doesn't matter to RS.com as they already have their money, and we'd have high quality shows we've always wanted. We'd still need the answer to the key question - how many stonesfreaks are there?

A scenario: 5,000 fans buy a stake in a 1978 DVD release for 500 euros = 2,500,000 euros. 20% on costs, the rest to RS.com? Food for thought.

I would certainly NOT pay 500 euros for a DVD.

It's an intriguing idea, that's for sure. I'm not sure if the Stones would be willing or able to learn 10-20 new songs for one show, though. If it paid the same as one of their regular shows, I think they would prefer to stay on autopilot rather than learn a bunch of different material.

Maybe they could do a multiple show stand (say 6 shows) somewhere like London, New York. LA or Vegas and announce in advance that the concerts would be for diehard fans and wouldn't be the usual greatest hits show. That way casual fans couldn't complain that they bought a ticket and didn't get to hear Miss You - they would know the deal going in.

Six shows might make it worth the Stones' while, especially if they only had to learn 7-8 different numbers (I'd be happy with that amount). The positive publicity would be great for them, plus they would probably double the ticket prices and clean up at the box office. Getting the positive publicity and doubling their paycheck for six shows might be enough to convince them to learn different material.

OK, then maybe 50,000 people pay 50 euros? Feasible? The maths will be ugly whichever way it's cut

thank you Erik.
helpful hint for anyone hiring any band: if you want them to give a good performance,
ask them to play what they freakin feel like playing.

This is a great idea! Although improbable, is it really so impossible?
Is it even possible to get in contact with the bands management, to
put forward the idea? I think we should give it a go. What is the worst
that can happen, no reply? If it did happen we obviously would not be
able to pick the setlist. But for true fans I'm sure they would drop the
warhorses and spice it up. I'll sign the petition!!!

If it was that simple every one would do it.

Even with fans I think there is no way the band will be dictated to on what they play.

The administration and legal costs would be ridiculous, that's why collectives don't organise concerts, promoters and companies do.

how on earth would you expect to find 120,000 people all willing to pay £80 each ?

even if you did. if each of those 120,000 people each suggested 20 songs for the band to play you'd (without fail) end up with a warhorses setlist

stick to attending gigs SD. its a lot less hassle!

.... not if the warhorses are ruled out.

Ah! The Horsens set list! I'll gladly pay to see that show again! Best of the shows I've seen on this tour! Let's do it! Where do I send the money?

I'm not sure the Stones are playing what they feel like. I think they are playing what they think the majority want to hear.

Hey, I wish they stirred things around too!
But it's a L-O-N-G way between doing a setlist of songs the audience recognize - and also works well in concert, than doing a setlist of "specially requested songs.
Even though they do a "safe" setlist these days....you still get a feeling that they got something to prove when they walk on stage....they're not for hire.
