Yeah. Heard about it this morning. By one of those flat fish right? Isn't it called a manta or something? Too bad really. He fought for animal rights, which is great of course. He died during a TV shoot. I hope that his death (Where he is stung by the manta) doesn't leak to the internet.
Never liked him on TV. Way too hyperactive for my tastes, but he must've been a good dude.

RIP Steve Irwin.

did alot for conservation and educatiing us about our environment.

kind of sadly ironic, that after spending years cuddling Crocs and snakes,
he gets killed in the ocean in a freak accident.

Some Aussie dude said that the "rod" he was poked with by the stingray is a dangerous as a bayonet if it hits vital organs...

Ah yes I heard it on the news this morning too.. I was like what the @#$%&? I always liked the programs he made.. and he did a lot for wild life conservation, and the protection of the enviroment.. I think it's a loss!! People make jokes about it, I really don't think it is appropriate..

I didn't think those things were prone to attack people.Chalk this one up to the law of averages.

I feel terrible, he was such a likeable guy who really helped with animal rights causes as you've said. It said on line that the tail of the string raY has a knife-like tip and that apparently pierced his heart!! Awful!

I've always been afraid of these fishes.

They're coated in poison...so, if it gets anywhere near your heart, there's really no chance. Too bad, I always liked him.

The poison did not kill him the razor sharp barb did ,they can be up to 20cm /8"long.

The Ray was defending its sel,f they only attack when they feel threatened, same as most animals/fish.

Personally I agree with Kent, what he did for wildlife was great but his ott in your face presenting on the TV I found irritating.

I spent 16 years of my childhood in Hawaii, where there are tons of rays, and I never ever heard of someone being pierced through the heart. It is an incredibly freak accident.

By the way, sting rays (which are round) have poisonous tails. Manta Rays, such as in the picture on the right, do not.

Steve Irwin was barmy. Full stop. And I have no doubt he provoked the sting ray because he thought he was invincible. Selfish, thinking only of himself and his next appearance on telly, instead of his wife and daughter. @#$%&.

this unfortunate incident reminds me of the Documentary "Grizzly Man"...............you can't mess with nature or the price is high (your life)

I liked his shows. Remember his "appearance" on South Park where he pissed animals off by "jamming my thumb up its butthole"? That was great.

I liked him, but he was a moron. He harassed animals. The only way he could have been killed by that stingray is if he tried to wrestle with it like he did a crocodile. And no doubt, he did. Interviews they've been showing today made him seem full of hubris, like he could do anything he wanted with animals because he had a "special gift." But he wasn't gentle, and he played with animals that were known for having very primitive,non-reasoning brains, such as crocs, snakes, and now a stingray. He should have though about his kids, but of course, he dangled one as a one-month-old baby right in front of a croc, in front of the cameras.

I have no feelings one way or the other toward Steve Irwin except I admire what he has done for conservation and wildlife.

You, Marianna, write ..."A 'moron". You are an idiot.

Whilst he DID have a hold of his son whislt he fed a croc, and I don't condone even that, he certainly DID NOT DANGLE the baby in front of the animal.

Your choice of words is pathetic. Your comments exhibit the same cold disregard for the family as you suggest Irwin himself did.

You really (THE SAME AS ME) have no real idea what happened because we weren't there. But yep, as he swam near (above) this stingray, video taken as the incident happened, will apparently show nothing more than a bizzare accident. NOT Irwin trying to 'wrestle with it.

But in any case, I'll certainly reserve judgment on this until all the facts are in, suggest we all do likewise (ESPECIALLY YOU - MARIANNA) did with your comments) and I send my sympathies to the family.

QUOTE : Superintendent Mike Keating said today police had viewed footage of Mr Irwin's death.

"There is no evidence that Mr Irwin was intimidating or threatening the stingray,'' he said.

"My advice is that he was observing the stingray. There are no suspicious circumstances in relation to the death of Mr Irwin.''

Right. It was Michael Jackson who dangled a baby over a balcony in Europe. Sounds like the morphing of two stories.
