Do the Backing Musicians Have a Collective Name?
Posted by: bassplayer617 ()

Other than the extended Stones onstage family, do Blondie, Lisa, Bernard et al have a name, official or unoffcial?

I've often thought that the "family" could produce a pretty good album on their own. Dang, they already have three potential lead vocalists.

Not kidding -- they are all excellent performers in their own right, and I admire each and every one of them.

Bernard Fowler sings lead vocals on 2 of Charlie's solo albums. Excellent work!

They have done good work somewhat together...Bernard's quite excellent new album ('Friends With Privileges') has Lisa, Ron Wood, Waddy Wachtel (talking extended family, of course, not just current tour), Darryl Jones, Ivan Neville, Shaun Solomon (Wood's bassist on '92-93 tour) on it...Bernard's Nickelbag albums from '96 & '97 had Lisa, Darryl, Ron Wood, etc, and B.F. was on several Charlie, Ron, Mick, & Keith albums (btw the CW/Keltner Project featured Mick, G. Recile, Blondie C., & Keith), ...Ivan Neville's cds since "Thanks" in '95 have included Wachtel, Keith, Ron, Charley Drayton, Steve Jordon, George Recile, etc; Hubert Sumlin's last had Blondie, Keith, Recile, Rob Frabroni, plus Levon Helm & David Johansen...The Tim Ries Project...Lots of Stones (group & individual) collaborations since the '90s have some extended in-laws, be it Darryl, Bernard, Keys, etc...And Blondie & Bernard have gigged together, haven't they?, tho not in my town...

Mick's always wearing a big wig and small sunglasses. So if he wanted to be incognito at this drum-project he would have gone in the studio baldheaded and wearing BIG sunglasses

Bernard was also the co-lead vocalist with Ronnie's touring band. On "Slide On...Live", he does a great version of "Stay With Me". That is really a good album --glad I bought it. Loud and in your face.

The point I'm making is that the core group has assembled a troupe of backing musicians that is elite unto itself -- I can't think of any other touring band that has such a talented lineup.

Many hardcore fans hate this, but it is a fact -- the Rolling Stones ARE an extended musical family, and they are better because of it. I have absolutely no problem with it.

As a matter of fact, this started with the addition of the horn section and a keyboardist way back in 1971/72, and it has evolved into what we have today -- it seems a natural progression.

Actually my impression at the 4 shows I saw was that the Stones are relying less on Chuck, sound-wise, and the horns, than they did in '03 - and certainly for example '89-90 when we had M Clifford as well...The Stones are up front, the others, be it b.v.'s, horns, Lisa's feature on a verse of one song, or Bobby's solo or two, mostly enhance rather than dominate. As it shound be.
I swear I barely heard Chuck at 3 of the 4 shows I attended.

One person tells me "The Insecurity Band Aids" another person says "Stoney Stoners and the Stonettes" and then I hear NOW it's "Slacker's Little Helpers" so who the hell knows...More complicated than Paul McCartney/Wings/Paul and Linda/Paul McCartney and Wings/McCartney/Wings featuring Paul McCartney - driving record stores NUTS !!!! "Chaz, what LETTER should I store this sh*t under !?!?!?!"

The guys are all good, assets, and not overused - so aside from Chuck's overplaying on Licks & perhaps B2B tours (when I really longed for Mac), & the fact that neither Ron nor Keith can sing backup in an organized or tuneful way that fits all the material (just as Exile had it great chorus of New Orleans legends singing on TD, Let It Loose, etc), I can't see the bitching. I dug Bernard long before he was with the RS - from the great Bill Laswell 'Axiom'/Black Arc/ etc records of the 80s, Tackhead, and Material's "One Down" thru his contributions especially on Charlie & Ron's solo cds, and Nickelbag and his great solo album he had a life and career long before '89. Blondie has been on countless fine records since Flame & the Beach Boys in the early 70s. The horn section? Excellent, better than the one from '89 (less slick) & less out of tune than the great Keys & Price could be. And not soloing with the same bland tone throughout an entire song, as Ernie Watts was sometimes doing. Long as the Stones are upfront in the mix, the backup is fine with me.

If Keys is so great, why Ries?

Re: Do the Backing Musicians Have a Collective Name?

Frankly Keys is a great classic '50s r&b inspired rock & roll saxist with a recognizeable style and sound - the opposite of post Sanborn slickness, but with many medical problems in recent years,& at 63, I don't think he has the stamina so he does his distinctive solo parts, & participates in the ensemble.

Yeah, Ries can veer into Kenny G.(talk about a sleeping pill!) territory sometimes.
