Ronnie's "Coach" on Stage
Posted by: bassplayer617 ()

It's been obvious for several years now -- Ronnie's number one cheerleader, coach and prompter is Mick.

With all of Ronnie's widely-publicized alcohol problems, one of his strongest supporters, besides his family, is Mick Jagger.

Mick KNOWS the man's potential, and I fully believe that Mick has taken it upon himself to pull the best out of Ron. Listen to the boots --Mick and Keith have next to no onstage rapport, but Mick is always exhorting Ronnie before and even during his solos-- "Let's go. Come on."

This makes me think of Mick in a different way. Between him and Chuck Leavell, they are the musical leaders. Chuck keeps Keith on cue, and Mick overwatches Ronnie.

Haven't you folks noticed this?

Isn't this old news, bassplayer? What's your purpose?
Ronnie does a great job now, that's the main point.

this reminds me of the lets spend the night together video when Mick is pointing at his watch and yelling at Ron Wood to get ready. hes probably saying "Its Four Thirty we go on in a half in hour get it together!"

but I mean, that was a LONG time ago.

The boys wanted a particularily, quick getaway at this show
(i.e 2nd verse of Satisfaction).
Lisa jumped into the drivers seat, the boys dived in, behind her, leaving Chuck, Bernard, Blondie and the horns, to get a cab back to the hotel.

Like in the old days. They used to have a heli on stage - kept the blades running. Play and leave. Altamont.

I think Mick has always done things to push the other musicians. There's TONS of boots where Mick is like "C'mon Charlie, hit it hard" or he'll yell something right before a guitar solo, or get right up close in Billy Preston's face and dance while Billy plays or whatever. You can hear him on a lot of versions of "Tumbling Dice" from '72, you'll hear Mick yelling "one thing, Charlie, one thing!" to Charlie at the end of the song... it happens on more than one gig, what is that all about? I think he was saying "do the one thing" meaning he wants Charlie to play the snare hard on the one beat, so that people will clap along. Because sometimes on that tour Charlie does it really strong, sometimes not. My guess is that in the early days of the song, Charlie wanted to do something else on drums in that part of the song, and Mick was coaching him along.

But you're right, he sure doesn't seem to want to mess with Keith. I know I saw one gig in the '90s (don't remember exactly which one anymore) where Mick and Keith completely avoided each other and did not even exchange so much as a glance until the bows at the very end. And I swear, a couple of times Keith was giving Mick "the glare" when his back was turned.

It is amazing how much attention Ronni gets. If he plays one good gig out of ten he is great again. He is awful bad and not worth the money. In a normal job he would have been fired ages ago! Hey Ronni please join Rod again and let Waddy Wachtel take over your place. You have made enough money!

I saw "the glare" when the stage hand couldn't get his guitar to work out on the B-stage at Glasgow. I thought, "How lousy it would be to be on the other end of that!" It wasn't a pretty sight, but at the same time, it's one of the images that stands out as I reminisce about the shows. I wonder if Keith gave him an earful after the show.

watch the pro shot video/DVD from the Dallas show in 1989. Just before they play (I think) 'Ruby Tuesday', you can quite easily hear and see Mick say "fĂșck off you c*nt" right in Keith's face.

Mick and Keith smile and kid around on stage and everytime the play 'Rambler' they are one being.

I think the initial post and response, "What's your point?" deserves reminding that it was Keith who was first to collaborate and fall in with Ron Wood, in '74. Mick may have been friends with Wood, as he was with Clapton, Bowie, etc, but Keith got into the sort of musical rapport he had with Brian, Gram, etc. It seems when RW's addictions became unmanageable, and later he started trying to get or stay sober the RW/KR relationship was less close, and on the past couple tours Mick has indeed been more of an encouragement to RW than Keith can.
