Great song, blues with a lot of feel. One of my favorites on Emotional Rescue. Would love to hear it live. I love how the guitar sream or cry I should say at the end.

novica, sadly there isn't. Many songs from Emotional Rescue, Undercover and Dirty Work have never been played live and probably never will be.

The studio version is basically live. I think it's all one take; don't know when the lyrics were written, possibly during rehearsal earlier in the session. They came up with the song on the spot.

So full and intense and thoroughly Stonesified! A terminal downer in a really good way.

Listen to it back to back with Back of my Hand and realize the latter is just a tossed off studio warmup.

Also, very likely the only blues song in the history of the genre where the protagonist has the blues because he is stumbling around the rubble of post-war Berlin.

'Cause you'll be down in the gutter
You'll be bummin' for cigarettes
Bummin' for nylons
In the American Zone

************

Down in the hole
After diggin' the trenches
Looking for cover and findin' out there ain't nowhere nowhere to go
Nowhere nowhere nowhere to go

*******************

Your black market cigarettes
Your American nightclubs
Ah, they've got nowhere left

doncha just luv it when jagger drops down to that low register at the end - "down.....in the hole!" one of my favorite blues excursions they've ever done....a rare minor blues, too.

The track is the second-best on ER, behind Keef's effort — All About You.
He's killer on those ballad types, with just a flavor of cuntry (or Hole, if you get the drift)
