......this Wilco thread seems to be fertile soil for a nod to indie label Americana band "Bright Eyes."

[en.wikipedia.org]

I strongly recommend them. I came to appreciate them just recently after seeing them on the TV show Austin City Limits....the same night that Wilco's performance was broadcast. In fact, I was mesmerized by singer/songwriter Conor Oberst's song writing, with brillaint phrasings and a hypnotic delivery.

Anyone who loves Neil Young should buy "A.M."

The Wilco movie (I think it's called I Am Trying To Break Your Heart) is a good rock documentary worth checking out.

yes, it's generally rated as one of the very best rock documentaries,
the conflict between Jeff Tweedy and Jay Bennett makes facinating viewing.

some news on the much-anticipated,
new Gary Louris/Mark Olson, Jayhawks "reunion" album:-

This came from Mark's management:

"The Mark & Gary album with Chris Robinson producing is in fact finished, and it is so amazingly great that it sounds like pure magic. I think all the fans of the Olson/Louris Jayhawks will be very, very pleased, as will a host of other music fans who just love great songs and beautiful harmonies.

No word yet on release dates or labels, although that will all work itself out soon. I think they will definitely tour together as well, hopefully in the US and in Europe.

As a separate matter, Mark Olson finished recording his next solo album this past November, and it is by far his most fully realized work in his post Jayhawks life. An incredible collection of wonderfully beautiful and moving songs, probably amongst his best songwriting ever. It was produced by Ben Vaughn, and Gary also sings harmony vocals on a few of the songs as well. That record will be released on HackTone Records in the US & Canada on May 8, 2007. We’re still looking for the right European partners for it as we speak."

Certainly can't compete with all of Adrian-L's good news, but...

Was just watching Jeff Tweedy's new "Sunken Treasure" concert documentary and was amused at a blink-and-you'll-miss-it scene in which Tweedy is sitting on a tour bus and is rewinding a DVD of the opening of the Stones' appearance at last year's Super Bowl--the better to check out the pyro.

Nice to see the "fan" side of the artist in action. Makes me feel better about doing similar stuff.

I have tried and tried but just can not get into Wilco. It's much l;ike the "OK Computer"(Radiohead) thing with me: everyone says it is great but I never dug it.
Other good roots rock" Drive By Truckers, Kings of Leon, Jayhawks, Izzy Stradlin.

I just saw a fantastic Jeff Tweedy solo show on Sat. night. God Bless Wilco.

P.S. It wasn't even the best show of my weekend -- that would be Yo La Tengo on Friday night. I had an exceptional weekend of music.

Jeez, I'm excited for the next Wilco album. Wish we didn't have to wait three months to hear it.

Wilco is playing Bonarroo (sp.?) in Tennessee in June, and I expect that they will perform elsewhere to support the album . . . and I do mean SUPPORT the album. When A Ghost Is Born was released three years ago, their performances included practically every song from the album.

I'm seeing Autumn Defense in Los Angeles tonight. Wilco's John Stirrat leads that band, which also includes Pat Sansone from the Wilco universe. I guess you could say that Sansone is Wilco's Brian Jones, but let's just say that he is a multi-instrumentalist and leave it at that.

first review of new, forthcoming album:-

Wilco
Sky Blue Sky
Nonesuch, 14 May

It's been a while since the last offering from Jeff Tweedy and Co, but three years of slavering from fans is about to be rewarded with this seventh studio album. And, boy, was it worth the wait. Though Wilco are known as purveyors of alt country rock, Sky Blue Sky is an astounding demonstration of their ability to move between soulful acoustic folk, jazzy blues, country skank and pumping rock. Tweedy has the vocal range of three people, from country lilt to blues ache to folk sweetness - all this often in the space of one song. And what songs they are. 'You Are My Face' is a classic Wilco segue, as a sleepy Beatleseque ditty is suddenly interrupted with a jazz guitar explosion twinned with Tweedy's achy blues voice before returning seamlessly to piano tinkle and smooth vocals. There are stories of love lost and found, told with originality, humour and sweetness. 'How can I warn you my tongue turns to dust? Lack of disgust doesn't mean that I don't care. It means I'm partially there,' sings Tweedy on the delicately beautiful 'Please Be Patient With Me'. The instrumentation is a mini-rock opera in itself. Glorious riffs, thumping piano and virtuoso guitar solos from Nels Cline are orchestrated with skill, complementing the intricately composed and woven melodies. Simple and soothing, yet rich and rewarding, this is an album you unknowingly yearn for, like a cool hand on a hot forehead. A great album from a band in their prime.
