Twickenham 22nd Aug- 'The Monet Of Middlesex' On fire Again!
Posted by: Adrian-L ()

After the dizzy heights, reached by the band, on Sunday, i was a little hesitant entering Twickenham Stadium, for last night's show.
Surely, they couldn't match those levels of stubborn brilliance, again, could they?
... well- they did and unbelievably, they bettered it.

Mick Jagger "Sir Mick Of Twick" (as a held aloft sign, exclaimed), asked the audience, if anyone had attended their Twickenham/Richmond shows
back in '62-'63.. afew people waved, shouted, and held arms aloft.

"don't worry, it's the same setlist!", Mick quipped.

-Methinks 'Sir Mick Of Twicks' reads the Message Boards!!!

Ronnie Wood, 'The Monet Of Middlesex', (as Mick introduced him) was again,
on fire... the guy was the consummate professional.
He was 'on the money' all night, his all round guitar work
and solo's in particular, were fabulous.

He really did bring his 'A' game , back to his home ground,
and it was great to witness.

Charlie was Charlie- steady as a rock, never missed a beat.
The crowd showed their appreciation with huge cheers- even though Mick offered him the microphone , to address us,and he, as usual, declined.

Keith, in my opinion, was a little off-colour on sunday- not so, last night.
He was clearly fired up, focused and enjoying himself.
To my untrained ears, his guitar work was flawless.

Mick's voice was not the fragile instrument, that it was, on sunday-
and he gained more and more confidence as the show progressed.

'She's So Cold' 'L.S.T.N.T' 'Live With Me' and 'Bitch', were stunning additions to the setlist- yes ! a different selist to '62-'63!

I had 'nosebleed' seats in the North Stand (the opposite end to the stage)- the sound was superb, and something which has certainly been looked at and improved since their last visit here, in 2003.

The atmosphere generated by their performance last night, is going to be very, very hard to beat, or indeed match, on any of the remaining dates,
on this tour.

They truly, and genuinely, raised the bar, last night, to a level,
i did not think they could reach at this stage of the game.

I hope for the people of Glasgow, that the momentum continues, and they get a show to remember, like this one.

But it's going to be hard- this was a legendary performance.

Hi Adrian-L,

Sorry I missed you AGAIN in the Cabbage Patch.....yeh it was a great show, maybe it had something to do with, as Mick put it, "we've got so many family and friends of the band here tonight, we should have built an extra stand!"

I had a great seat at the front of D5 (cheers Gazza/Bitch) and the sound was really good there too - we moved to the barrier of the 'B' stage just in time before the security dudes stopped everyone and had a stunning experience up close and personal.

All in all, two fantastic Twickenham shows - maybe it's the 'London effect' but they were firing on all cylinders. The Bang just got Bigger!!!

sorry to have missed you too, it really is difficult in a packed pub to identify/recognise people you've not seen before.
try again in Sheffield/Cardiff?? (my next 2 shows)

Rocks Off and Shidoobee, have the right kind of idea- tell-tale tshirts,
..hell- i know its a bit tacky, but it makes life alot easier when you're trying to locate people in such a busy environment.

Great to meet up, again, with Gazza and PartyDoll Meg (Rocks Off) and a very nice suprise to say hello and shake the hand of ,the legendary, Rockman.

Two (!) new songs left in the set last night. Rain Fall Down is very welcome, interesting setlist I must admit. But nevertheless: WHY THIS?

WHY IS THIS GREATEST HITS SPECTACLE VALLED BIGGER BANG IF THEY'RE NOW DOWN TO PERFORM EVERY 6TH OR 9TH OUT OF THE 18 NEW TRACKS???

Why did they RECORD this great CD??? What's wrong with this band???

it's hard to criticise a show and performance, such as the one i witnessed, last night.
The vast majority of European Stadium audiences, demand the hits, and indeed, it's partially true to say, only know the hits.

Although enthusiastically received,by many,
the ABB tracks that were played, were generally unknown to the vast majority of the audience, and the harsh reality is,
were used as an excuse to visits the urinals and the merchandise stands.

That's right - but I thought 'Rain Fall Down' (which might have been more appropriate for Sunday!) was a great Live song - well executed, and I am glad they played it.

'Rain Fall Down' was great last night, however i prefered the sunday night airing of "Streets Of Love"
- both tracks are better live, than on record.

I'd love the pause/expression Mick gave during SOL when he's singing the bit about being really bad..... classic!

Most ABB Songs are better "live". Vienna was a ABB concert. 5 Songs. I would prefer it like that. Even my friend who is no stones fan at all liked Rain Fall Dawn, SOL and Empty more than some old songs. She was singing "empty" the next day till I told her to stop.. (laugh...) the "general" audience wants old songs but they would like new songs as well. But this discussion...

there weren't too many people complaining about the setlist,
on the way out of the Stadium, last night.
There was a post-gig buzz/atmosphere, that i have not witnessed
for quite a while.

On the way home, I met some people - probably in their 30s - and it was their first Stones show. They couldn't stop raving about it and one of the things they said was that they had heard exactly the songs they had wanted to hear - i.e., the warhorses.

i agree- the manner in which he dismisses Mick with just a glance
or a hand movement is sublime.

I can't believe that we still have some trainspotters whinging.
What do these people want???
Their own individual, hand-crafted and polished Stones stadium show???
The like of Stonesfrk and ThiefInTheNight do my head in.
I think it's some kind of PENIS ENVY that they are suffering from.
The shows have gone, they were great, and they didn't see them, I think that is the problem for some of these people.

I've got to say that I'm happy the boys have kicked ass big-style and most of the whingers didn't get to see it. A big HAHAHAHA from me.

Oily.

What more can one add to the resounding acclaim bestowed on the second Twickers show. I would never have dreamed 7 (count'em) different songs would have been added; that in itself was mind-blowing!!

But the band, were just collectively on incendiary form. I cannot ever remember the band being so in-tune with each other in every way and playing so magnificently too.

Let's see if the infamous Scottish crowd in Glasgow can inspire them to even greater heights on Friday.

I doubt the set-list in Glasgow could top this one, but maybe they will throw in a few surprises?

Cheers

SD

DarrylJones on last nights show, from his website blog:-

Twickenham 22nd
It's such an odd thing to go out on stage and from the beginning feel that it's going to be an exciting show. You never want to give into the idea of it to quickly. You just want to pay attention to the music and each other and let it happen. Tonight I had that feeling. I think we all did. And it just unfolded into such a special night. I thought we played pretty well the first night at Twickenham but in my opinion it paled in comparison to tonight's show. We were working with some hinderances tonight and sometimes that's just what you need to dig a bit deeper and have some real magic occur. I had a great time playing and listening to these guys tonight. I'm glad I do what I do tonight. Great audience, great players all around and the magic just happens. It takes so many variables and makes them into something so simple. Joy!

Glad to hear your seat was OK. Apologies to yourself and anyone else I was hanging out with (or intending to) for having to split at short notice at 5 pm, but we scored some VIP access at very short notice and had to leave at that moment.

To get back to Adrian's post, I thought Ronnie was on fine form both nights. His performances certainly would have caused some to eat their words ("Sway" on night 1 was especially great) - lets hope he keeps that up.

Damn - Ronnie needs to stop falling asleep when he smokes!

If he's on fire again, someone needs to take away his cigarettes!
