Keith's backing vocals on You Can't Always Get What You Want in the 70's

How's that for a topic title?

Anyway, on the chorus, he sings the same lyrics, but in a different melody. It sounds very good!! They should DUMP the back-up singers and have Keith do THAT again, that'll spice that one up!!

I agree. I like keiths back up vocals during the chorus on the love you live version.

Don't think ol' Keefy can hit those notes anymore. Too many cigs, I'm afraid. Note how different Happy sounds nowadays. They had to move it down a couple of octaves.

I have to say I think theyve managed to make YCAWYW a little more interesting on this tour. compared to the other tours from 89 on.

Keef still plays it in the same key as when it was recorded for Exile.

maybe when Mick sang back up, that made it sound like it was in a higher key.

yeah possibly

note now that YCAGWYW is now played in C when it was recorded in E. IORR recorded in E and now played in B. Perhaps when these two songs are played live the higher register suits Mick voice more.

I think you've got it backwards--they're played in those keys so as to be lower now.

IORR sounds higher to me live.

The chords and mick's vocal in the verse are higher, but that way he doesn't have to sky on the chorus--he could never scream it in B as he does on the record in E, but this way the whole thing is more consistent (and boring, IMO).

Depends on which way you you look @ it. If you look @ the guitar The chord of E played with open strings (normal concert tuning) is in a lower key than either the keys of B or C.

But we're talking about vocals.

Yep which ever way you look at it the keys of B & C are still higher than E.

Ok try singing in B or C lower than E. Not possible unless you're Pavarotti. It's more difficult when you consider that Mick does not have a huge Octave range and voice his more Tenor/ Baritone

ps trust me I'm a musician and have sung in a choir I think I know what I'm talking about.

PPs sorry I got a bit pompous therewinking smiley

all I know is that both versions of IORR is pretty hard to for me to try and sing a long with. It sounds like a simple song but when Ive actually try to sing the chorus after the verse I cant pull it off!

If you're in a band try to get them to play it in G. That may work.

I miss Keith's vocals soo much. Listen to the boots from say, the Tattoo You tour, and he is singing all the time. Now? Not at all.

I love Lisa and Bernard n all, but I want to hear Keith on backups. And I would LOVE to see Mick & Keith sharing a mike like the old days.

but YCAGWYW....

keith n ronnie could till do the backup vocals like the 70s and early 80s
if they really wanted, i think they got a bit lazy and that was that

I don't know what version of Happy you are listening to.. but playing and singing Happy "a couple of octaves lower" will take you a strange guitar and an ever stranger voice.

When they change it by an octave or more, of course the key stays the same...

And yet it sounded so much better back then, still the highlight on the LA FORUM and Aux Les Abbatoirs.
