That...Gimme Shelter..."sound"
Posted by: La Mano Nera ()

I've been fiddling on my amp, trying to get that distinct "sound" on Keith's ryhtym guitar. I know he recorded it on a hollow body- is that what I'm hearing? You know...that..."echoy" sound. He also said the guitar's neck fell off litteraly after the last note of the take- could that be it? The guitars shittiness?

Did he use a special effect? Etc.

Anyone here have any suggestions/preferences?

Think it was a Maton, an Australian company very much still on the go. Seen some photos of him with a Maton semi-acoustic. Keith says you can hear the neck coming off if you listen closely......

Gimme Shelter is recorded in open D tuning on a Maton semi-acoustic guitar with P90-like pickups, through a 100 watt Triumph Tremelo amp. The intro consists of several layered parts, and in post-production delay and echo was added. If you play the intro, notice how the second phrase (on cool smiley are actually hammer-ons. I have never heard a guitarist other than Keith play the intro with the short hammer-ons on the B !

How about the lead licks? Any idea what gear he used for those?

I love that period when Keith thought he was a very brilliant solo-guitarist...just before Taylor arrived...

Anyone who can come up with a solo as good as the SFTD solo, is a briliant solo guitarist.

He's a brilliant lick master. Licks and riffs and rythms. Melodies, fill ins etc. MAthjis, is it hammer ons on B? From the very start, the first B?Have to listen again.

What's a hammer-on anyway?

Yeah I don't see why many people don't appreciate Keith's skills.I don't the difficulty of the solo on SFTD in steel Wheels or on Nearness of you from the recent tour but he does exactly what a guitarist should do.Touch your heart.

JumpingKent,

A "Hammer-On" refers to a guitar technique. A string is first plucked, fingered or open. A fraction of a beat later, the guitarist will use a finger to "hammer on" a higher note, which is usually just a half- or whole-step higher on the music scale.

The core of the Gimme Shelter "sound" was crafted not by a mere guitar, wah wah pedal or a whammy bar but t'was the late 1960's era itself. Think of the song as a psychedelic time capsule.

Just that its a very concerned song,
sooner something new from the time to come.
But we can read anything we like into it.
One of the best rock songs ever written and
recorded.

keith took under my thumb as a basis and foundation and came up with GS

the feel and rhythm of the intro on under my thumb became the opening splash of
seductive notes on GS

But he still is ( frankly not so much this tour at the 4 concerts I attended in EU ). Not like MickT, but from time to time he can leashes out 15- 20" of virtuosity à la Berry.

One can hear it, the way he plays UMT at Altamont. Did he ever talk about how he came up with GS? Any interviews?

"Gimmie Shelter is a classic (example of a song where the music and words came together). That, I just slapped down on a cassette while waiting for Mick to finish Performance."
- Keith Richards, 1983

"The guitar I used on Gimmie Shelter on Let It Bleed - as if by design, it fell apart on the last take."
- Keith Richards, 1989

"That (song too, like Midnight Rambler) was done on a full-bodied, Australian electric-acoustic, f-hole guitar. It kind of looked like an Australian copy of the Gibson model that Chuck Berry used... It had all been revarnished and painted out, but it sounded great. It made a great record... And on the very last note of Gimmie Shelter, the whole neck fell off. You can hear it on the original take."
- Keith Richards, 2002

LA Forum,

I have not seen any interview its just my guess when I play acoustic under my thumb one day it hit me that keith might created GS from under my thumb.

Oh. Then I actually do it all the time. If I understood you correct then AC/DC's "Thunderstruck" uses hammer-on for the entire intro riff......Right???

There is also another distinct GS sound. The one that Keith and Taylor use in 73 (and to a lesser extent in 69) during the verses. On the Live versions they started doing this particular riff which is very hard to sing through typing. But under the "Oh a storm is threatening" lines they are pumping on the one root note and then they throw that riff in between the lines always.

"...no longer shall you trudge 'cross my peaceful mind."

Anyone know why they rarely play GS?

My son lucked out at MSG#2 last January but we missed it both times at SBC.

Hopefully the Oakland show will be the one...but it does seem that the few times they have played GS they were indoors.

They played it regularly during the 2nd leg of this tour. Not only indoors, as they also played it in Argentina, Mexico, NZ.
It was played a lot in 95-03, so that's probably it is not played as much on this tour.

There is an interview with Paul Schaffer from june '86,
where Keith talks about GS as beeing the cousin of UMT.
and then plays it on his guitar.
well, it's actually Ron's ESP B-Bender.

I've read Keith talking about how he recorded the intro six times. So, six layers. It's a powerfull opening of a fantastic song. Don't think anyone can copy that one. He really worked his butt off. One of my all time favourites. And I wish they'd do it live again, with Mick 'n Lisa. Magic moments and great memories from the Licks tour of this song.

someone in another thread mentioned how the Stones members were not "great" musicians....well listen to Let It Bleed Album and I'm sure those people who think Keith was an average guitar player will think again !
You don't need to play a trillion notes a minute to be a great guitar player....

Absolutely, in fact I'm sure I've read that Keith talked about how its what you don't play, and leaving those gaps, that makes the difference - it takes years for guitarists to work this out. In the opening riffs of Can't you hear me knocking its the gaps/stops that only Keith could come up with.
