Jerry Scheff

Adam Clayton
Edgar Meyer

Bass is always more felt than listened to, so this is in fact a difficult question. ;-)

That's so cruel, but I can't stop laughing... :-D

Paul McCartney is simply awesome. Still is. Bill Wyman worked in the Stones, but it's boring with the Rythm Kings to me.

So what's the criteria for deciding who is the best then? I'm curious.

Some of you guys play the bass guitar. I don't.

But I have always found Jeffrey Hammond's playing with Jethro Tull to be great. He was the most self-deprecating as a player. And it seems the majority of the fans took this by the word. His lines to me are not only well written - they stand out in the arrangement and have a "life of their own", let's say from Thick As A Brick onward - but they are always well played, with the perfect swing and sound.

As a guy who got more or less pitchforked into the job from nothing or close, was he told exactly what to play by the other guys in the group?

What do you think of this?

Fine bass playing is an art. I recall that Hendrix used to get so frustrated when he was in the studio in the late Sixties and Noel just wasn't giving it his all. JH would wait until he was gone and do some (but not all) bass parts over.

Macca was great for the Beatles but golly I miss Wyman's bass with the Stones. It was so much part of the Stones sound on some of their best songs, live and recorded. Daryl's quite a solid, often elegant player but does not bring what Bill did to many of the songs the band is playing on tour.

IMHO, threads like this should NEVER be called "who's the best", but rather "who's your favorite".

Most of my favorites have already been mentioned, but a guy who should be on "the list" is Edgar Meyer, who was part of the trio that produced the marvelous "Appalachia Waltz" and "Appalachian Journey" CDs. The other two were Mark O'Connor and Yo Yo Ma.

This thread was made by a certain Beatles-boy. This is a quite good merit of his.

Preciscely my 4 string friend! Who and what is the best is a subjective term.
