Interesting old article about unreleased cd box set.
Posted by: S.T.P ()

I found an old article dated 06.06.02 with some very interesting old news.
According to an article written by Bård Ose for NRK (public broadcaster in Norway), the Stones were about to release a huge box set of unreleased stuff from the seventies.
The basic line is that the band had given Virgin Records a go for a release of a cd box in connection with their 40th anniversary. Virgin has been given access to 100% of all recorded material between 1970 and 1979, both studio and live. The list contains nine studio visits and 42 concerts (7 from '72!) all done within the seventies.

I remember it was on the news here on IORR, and both Keith and Ronnie mentioned it on different occations in music magazines like Q etc. I wonder if Virgin really got access to these recordings and, if so, are they still working on it?

Well, anyway, for those of you that understand Norwegian, and haven't seen the article, here is the link:

I remember Keith mentioning something like this in Guitar World around 2002. How can I read this in English ?

There's a scene in the DVD "BEING MICK" where he's talking about organizing all the Stones songs in some room (in Mick's French place I think) in the backround you can hear the unreleased Stones Version of LONELY AT THE TOP so they obviously have that stuff together SOMEWHERE ready to come out SOMEDAY....we're waiting....

If and when the Stones ever retire ( God forbid ) . We will be bombarded with outtakes and previosly unreleased material . They will try to capitalize in every way to bleed the fans from every bit of expendable income they've got , and more
And suckers like myself will continue to buy everything they release . Most recent example the release of Biggest Mistake on cd single and 7" red vinyl . I just pre-ordered them both .

Oh well I guess I'll just have to get another cabinet built for my vinyl and cd collections

I used to be like that too. But I grew over it in 97. I was so dissappointed that they only released mixes of Out Of Control, instead of a live version on the CDsingle, that I didn't buy that one.
And after that, I only buy what IS good and useful releases.
Rarities made it, but Forty Licks and Live Licks did not. Even though they're really cheap nowadays, I don't buy what I think is stupid. I'd rather find a bootleg of a complete show.

Let's hope that enough fans are alive and willing to buy the stuff then.

Boston 2006: Don't worry, I do not believe you'll have enough money to buy everything that will be released after they retire...

There was an article in a Dutch newspaper last week, about the way the Stones organised their financial affairs, using the mild taxes on royalties here. Only 1.6 %!
It also metioned the creation of several new foundations in order to arrange the handling of royalties, and musical 'heritage', after the death of one, or all of them. To prevent legal issues and fights among the relatives...

So maybe they have already exactly laid out what will be released and when...

Still, being too young to have seen them as often as I'd like, I will live long enough to be able to buy all these rare and special recordings that will be released somewhere in the 2030's...

Ok, I'll give it a try.

HUGE STONES BOX SET ON IT'S WAY

The Rolling Stones have given Virgin Records a go to release a huge cd box set
in connection with their 40th anniversary.

According to the web site www.collect.com Virgin Records have been given the rights to all recorded music by the stones after 1970, both studio and live. The official list of the material sendt Virgin is to begin with complete from 1970 untill 1979. The list reveals that there is enough material for 50 cd's.

It is of course, not of current interest to release absolutely everything, so Virgin is now working on picking out what the box will contain, from a total of nine studio visits and 42 conserts. (Lucky bastards!)

UNRELEASED LP FROM 1972

There are greate expectations for the concert material. Seven of the concert recordings from 1972 were done for a double live album which was supposed to be released the same year. The release of the album was stopped by the band's former record company, and the album have therefore been collecting dust ever since.

Now we might be able, for the first time, to hear the entire album. If it gets released, it will be the best Rolling Stones live album ever. The band smokes while plaughing through phenomenal versions of songs from '68-'72 during their Philadelphia and Pittsburg performances.

EL MOCAMBO

There are also great expectations to the recordings done at the little club "EL MOCAMBO" in Toronto, 4th and 5th of mars 1977. Four of the songs were released on LOVE YOU LIVE, and many claim that these songs are the best part of the album.

Though the coolest recordings from the two conserts never came out, including songs such as "Route 66", "Dance Little Sister", "All Down The Line" and "Crazy Mama", even though the songs were finished mixed, and ready for a release.

There is also speculations about Memphis june 1978, where the band did "Hound Dog", and the Oshawa gig in april the 22nd, that Keith was convicted in court to do for the blind people.

STUDIO PEARLS

It is likely to believe that the box will include somewhat around 20 new songs recorded in studio. There is not much material from the two first records (Sticky and Exile), but from around the mid seventies it's getting more and more. They made versions of soul tunes as "Drift Away", and blues classics as Sweet Home Chicago. The band also have songs that should have made an release earlier due to its quality, ie "Claudine" that unaccountably missed Emotional Rescue.

There are also some charming instrumentals, and some country tunes sung by Keith. All in all, there should be enough to get every Stones fan in extacy!

Pardon my frenchwinking smiley

I'd miss the famous Brussels/London recordings from 1973 (with some bonus tracks?). I would buy the official album although I own these recordings on LP and later on CD since 1977.

I don't know if it makes you feel any better but the Promo has a Don Was Live Remix. It's MSG 1/16/98 with the audience taken out. If you would like I can post in the Hot Stuff area.

a lot of that is educated guesswork based on whats available on bootlegs and what fans want to hear. id be surprised if any plans to release much of that stuff got beyond the early planning stage, although there were plans for an archive release in 2002 until they surprised everyone by reaching an agreement with both ABCKO and EMI for a compilation

as for 'Claudine' being 'unaccountably' missing from Emotional Rescue, the reason was quite obvious and well known. It was withdrawn due to the threat of litigation over the lyrical content.

I agree with your point of view. But what surprised me with this article, was that the web site www.collect.com claims that all these recordings were sendt to Virgin Records, and that there existed a published list of it. Could this be true? Bård Ose, who wrote the article, has written a book about the band's recording history, (only available in Norwegian I think). He is certainly
able to speculate, but I wonder what started the story in the first place. Maybe he just didn't check his sources good enough...?

I remember an email that was widely circulated in Stones circles in 2002 that was supposedly the official Virgin list of the sources they were going to cull from. It listed Brussells '73, Philadelphia '72, the well known studio outtakes from '78, etc. I don't remember any surprises (it might have been something a fan put together masquerading as an inside-Virgin communication).

It seemed like the plan was to do a Springsteen-like Tracks promo tour but then all of a sudden it was scuttled and the lamentable 40 Licks came out instead.
