Any reasons why Ernie Watts was used for the 81 tour as apposed to Bobby Keys?

Think it was Bobby's drug use. When keith Richards says you have a drug problem, damn, you must have a serious drug problem!!!

I heard he missed a few shows given drug use and Mick put him in the penalty box until he cleaned up.
No idea if this is true.

Buy The Dark Stuff by Nick Kent. It tells you everything you want to know. It's a must read for all Stones fans and covers the post STP years very very well, w/an extensive behind the scenes look at Europe '73.

Bobby of course "was used" in 1981, but only on some songs. It was a happy comeback as far as I see it.

I have also heard that Bobby was sick on and off with complications of Diabetes. Of cousre if he is diabetic ( he is I guess I should have said was)all the drugs and alcohol certainly screwed up his control of his blood sugar.

From what I heard, bobby wasnt realiable enough back then. at the begining of the tour, Mick asked Quincy Jones for help/advice with finding a saxaphonist and he reccmonded Ernie Watts. (bobb Keys joined the tour and played on Brown Sugar only.)

I really enjoy listening to Watts duruing the 1981 tour. BTW, I think it was Watts that played on the Hampton 1981 show.

I love Watts' solo's on Beast of Burden and just my imagination!!!

I don't understand why a lot of people don't like his style.

Cheers,

Because he playes too much and on everything out of place. Mind, it's OK in certain places, but yaes, he's too much all over the place. Nothing wrong with his style; quality, fine; quantity; too much.

agreed - but over-used and annoying on the '81 Tour.

It was Berlin 1973 (the last show of the Tour) that Bobby missed...apparently too drugged out....
