STONES ON LSD

I read ages ago that the Stones once did a gig when they were ALL on LSD. It was cut short as they were obviously too out of it. Does anyone know any more and if there is a recording of the gig.? I think it was the 1970's but whether it was with Mick Taylor or Ronnie, I've no idea.

I was just about to say that Charlie for sure wasn't tripping.
But then I remembered Gimme Shelter in Perth 1973, so who knows....

I know Country Joe & the Fish used to do this regularly but I can't see the Stones going for it esp. Charlie & Bill. Bill supposedly never took anything except smoked dope for a while in 1972. Charlie has been quoted as saying "Regretfully I never took acid."

I've heard Richards was on acid at the last SYdney show, not Perth. I wondered about that Perth too.

Perth - Keef on acid, Mick very drunk, LOL.

Rich Stadium - there were many, many sheets of acid going around the audience so it didn't surprise me when Stephen Davis said they were tripping. See Old Gods for the specifics. I remember having one hell of a time, swearing the football stadium was round, watching the flourencent lights in the parking lot for a few hours after the show. There is a crappy bootleg in existence, but my 31 year old memory is a bit hazy.

How anyone can find their guitar on acid let alone play it defies belief.

Back in the day, the Grateful Dead used to do it all the time...

Granted, though, the Stones never did play a 45 minute version of Tumblin' Dice...

I recall Mick saying something to the effect that he did it once in the 60s and it didn't go to well and he never do it on stage again, but then he said that he had done it again but didn't give dates when he did.

Also in Davis' book it says something about the band tripping early during the day at Knebworth and it didn't wear off as quickly as they thought and was still effecting them later that night when they were performing. They all look really messed up at the show but it could have been from other substances as well.

Which reminds me of an old joke:

What did one Deadhead say to the other Deadhead when the acid wore off?

"Jeezus, this music really sucks!"

The Stones have played what seems like a 45 minute version of Miss You on many occassions.

Dock Ellis, Pitcher for the Pittsburg Pirates, threw a no-hitter while tripping on acid. The year was 1970.

Here's an interview with Dock about that no-hitter.

Hey Bingo, as a former pitcher and consumer of hallucinogens I always had a special place in my heart for Doc Ellis. I even have that very baseball card you have on display. Please check out the Chuck Brodsky tune about the very trippy, pitchy, no-hitty situation of which you describe.

Thanks for that great post.

Apparently, the Who were on acid during their perfomance at Woodstock.

I heard Pete interviewed years ago about Woodstock and he said he was dosed without his knowledge or consent by some mischievous fan. He was angry about it. Talk about a bad trip, but man he was tearing up the guitar that night (pun intended).

Carlos Santana said he was also tripping heavily during his Woodstock performance. His band wasn't scheduled to perform until much later, or perhaps the next day, so he and his band mates had already dosed up when the promoters came to him and said, "can you go on stage now?" The bands that were suppposed to play were stuck in traffic or something like that. Santana was new then and the band had just come out with their first album if my memory serves me well, so he was glad to have the opportunity and said, "yeah." He said later that at times he felt like his feet weren't even touching the stage floor.

I think it's one of the many many many many rumors and legends about the Stones. That's one of the reasons why people still want to see them. To see those guys who once in the 70s were on stage with their heads full of acid.

More likely: NOTHING HAPPENED.

wow, beelybuster, that is a great story......yes, share the subway story with us, too. The comradery you must have felt with the band, while you were reminding yourself that you were a living breathing organism entitled to occupy the space of a chair, must have been magical.

bbbbbeelyboy, you have captured so many emotions and images with your well chosen words. I appreciate very much your sharing them, your words, with me. I remember that spirit of which you speak, the community, and I miss it. Hunter S. Thompson describes it in Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas as a high water mark, as if from a long since crested tidal wave. We won't experience that wave again, my friends, so it's nice to be reminded of it now and then. Thanks, bubbleboy.
