Performance - the movie
Posted by: twanghound ()
Date: July 17, 2006 14:02

i watched performance on dvd the other day.
interesting movie and funny to see mick and anita
when they were so young.
i have a few questions, maybe some stones-afficionados
know the answers.
in one scene anita is injecting something into her butt.
i didn't get what it was meant to be in the movie.
mean as i am i thought it was h, but is it technically
possible to inject it like that?
i don't know, luckily i am no insider.
when the movie was shot, keith and anita were dabbling
with powders yet...at least they know...
who was the owner of the house, where the movie was shot?
was it hans-georg behr, as he once claimed?
and what happened to michelle breton?
i can't find anything via google.
i heard somewhere she died of an od in the early 70s.
who was she?
thanks in advance for your answers.

We had this Topic on here about 2 months ago - if you can go back and find it EVERY TINY DETAIL is on that one - more then I would ever hope to know. The exterior of the house is Powis Square, Notting Hill Gate (before it was hip, when it was a dump). I hope I spelt that right. It's the corner house I'm ALMOST sure. Once you see it it's VERY obvious - very little change to the outside (a funny little side note is the London MTV "REAL WORLD" house is about 2 blocks away). The Performance interiors were shot at another house in another part of London. Anita's injecting some kinda drug into her ass cheek, Sex, drugs, and laying around tripping - that's what you did at Turners place I believe........

I think the interiors were shot at Lowndes Square by Hyde Park Corner. If you go looking for the house in Powis Square don't be put off by the house number 81 (as in the movie). This was knocked down about 25 years ago. The one they actually used was on the other side of the street but I can't recall the number offhand.

The "vitamin B" shot (yeah right) that Pherber injects I imagined to be smack but may have been speed. You can inject it under the skin like that, called "skin-popping" rather than mainlining into a vein.

Although it was claimed that Michelle Breton had died this wasn't actually true & Mick Brown tracked her down for an interview for his book on 'Performance'. Sadly she was in a mental institution in Europe somewhere where she had been for a number of years. Can't be more specific without tracking down my copy of the book.

.. injecting in the fatty part of the buttocks is commonly known as 'muscling'.. heroin often is used this way, does not leave marks on arms and one does not have to find a vein.. many females muscle heroin as opposed to intraveinously...... you can not muscle speed or coke, will cause abyss of the most unfriendly kind!!

mick and keith spun many set/stage people out during the shoot. several were never the same.

i will check out the book about performance -
didn't know that there exists one.
surely via amzon or ebay i will find it.
learning about this special method of injecting
smack changed my mind about an anecdote i read
once in one of my many stones-books:
keith injecing through his jeans in his butt for
not loosing time...
lol.
never believed that.
well, but isn't he the guy that shot out the lights
in his dealers appartments to escape with his freshly
scored drugs...haha.

If you're interested you should track down the documentary DONALD CAMMELL: THE ULTIMATE PERFORMANCE. Includes exclusive interviews w/Mick. Also there's a good book on the movie as part of the BFI Film Series, authored by Colin MacCabe.

I was just going to recommend the book by Colin McCabe. That book was VERY interesting to read. Learned a lot about Cammell and brother. About the Krays too.

amazon germany and amazon USA do not offer much -
only the soundtrack (which i already have) and a vhs
(which i don't need).
must phone a friend in london, maybe in the uk i'll
find more performance-material.
an official dvd with lots of bonus features would
be fine...

Yeah, I'm waiting for a Special Edition DVD - Nic Roeg did that with THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH (Bowie) and BAD TIMING - both are great, top notch.....

According to the messageboards at IMDB there is a special edition dvd of Performance on the way (but they have been saying that for over a year now). I've been campaigning there for audio commentaries by Jagger & Roeg. You never know your luck!

Tseverin, wow, that's good to hear. I have the Video but never even saw a DVD. What is IMDB? I'm still waiting for Wim Wender's UNTIL THE END OF THE WORLD (long Version) to come out on DVD. I have both short and long on super VHS - taped off of Laser Discs - but have not seen any DVD's......

Weird coincidence: a friend just alerted me to a new book that's coming out soon, DONALD CAMMELL: A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE.

This is the first book about the extraordinary, decadent life and enigmatic creative works of Donald Cammell (1934-1996) whose first film became a classic. Innovative and provocative, Performance brought a new sensibility to modern cinema. Although it immediately launched Cammell into the international limelight, his career proved elusive. He completed only three more feature films before his 1996 suicide. Yet this elusiveness elevated Cammell into myth and inspired a generation of young filmmakers including Quentin Tarantino, Steven Soderbergh, Roger Avary and Todd Haynes. This biography offers:

* rare stills

* previously unpublished personal photographs

* images from his early career as a portrait painter

* a filmography

* unrealized and uncompleted projects, and screenplays

* dozens of interviews

there exists a movie called "the best of the amsterdam erotic film festival"
which contains the infamous anita - mick interplay.
when i was a kid that movie was regularly shown in
a small cinema in the neighbourhood.
but i was way much too young and did not have the balls
to try and get in.
and by then i was not such a stones-maniac, so my interest was low.
it was reported that the scenes with mick and anita were steamy and
that their clip won an award...
maybe another stones-mythos, who knows.
but a funny idea: mick winning an award for bonking his buddies girlfriend...

Half-Nanker, here it is:

Mick's Brain, IMDB is probably the world's largest film & tv database. Don't know how you've lived without it. It's great for solving arguments about films or looking up a movie you can't remember the name of as you can search via director, actors, writers etc.: [imdb.com]

Glam Descendant, thanks for the tip on the Cammell book; I'll be ordering that asap!

Twanghound, it's interesting what you say about 'The best of the Amsterdam Erotic Festival'. I knew that the 10 minute outtake of Mick & Anita had won a 'Wet Dream' award at an Amsterdam festival but hadn't heard of it being shown outside of this festival anywhere. Apparently Sandy Lieberson owns this footage & it's in his safe. This would have made a cool dvd extra!

I remember a photo from the Performance film set that someone showed me in the late 70's. It was a full frontal nude image of Mick, Anita, and Michele, standing against a wall.

Anita has said she was right into heroin through the shooting of the film.

it was great magic 1972 when listening to 'Memo from Turner' for the first time...
nowadays I think 'Don't look back' is far superior to performance...

I noticed on the DVD copy, in the "Memo From Turner" scene, when Jagger turns to the camera in the doorway and says "Here's to Old England"....its been muted, you see Mick mouthing the words. At first I questioned it, but sure enough, when I went to watch my VHS copy, you hear it. Why they did this, I don't know. Kinda annoying. Anyone else notice it?

When I see Anita, today's Anita, actually in motion I easily see all her beauty again.

I assumed it was B12 always.
If I recall right - it's in a nonchalant way that she rams that rig in her butt; and the character of Pherber and Turner were a lot more ritualistic about their drug use. I would have thought it out of character if she had distractedly shot up some Heroin - no one shoots up like that, not in the beginning, not in the end.
