Washinton, DC, Norfolk, Charlotte, Knoxville - 4 Best '72 Shows
Date: July 11, 2006 19:34

If you're gonna have a '72 sampler, these are the best four shows for consistency and energy. I think I'll make up a little boxed set w/cool artwork.

I think New York, 26 July 1972, Pittsburgh, and the two Phili shows are stronger, but just my opinion....

I'll upload the "Going Back To The Roots" album (most of the Charlotte show - OK audience recording) once I figure out how to do that whole Yousendit thing.

Let me investigate.

You could tell they were not 100 % in New York.Too many parties? The other shows mentioned were better.

I think it was pure exhaustion. Pittsburg was added at the last minute, as well as Nashville. You can see the different writing on the tour adverts. And the Tuesday arvo show in New York f*ked everthing up. The final NY show was good, but the three preceeding it were below standard musically.

Charlotte sure is one of the hottest, most energetic shows of the tour and I know a few on this board rate it their best show ever. But it is marred by one thing: Taylor gets completely lost during his YCAGWYW solo, otherwise THE singular lyrical highlight of the '72 shows. He just doesn't get into it and resorts to playing short licks and counter rhythms. It's the one and only time I know of him getting lost that way. Therefore I rate Mobile, the Philly shows and Pittsburgh (my personal fav) higher.

Charlotte is one of my favorites from this tour or any for that matter... You can hear one fan in particular blown away by Taylor's solo, I think it was during Gimme Shelter.

I favor the last New York show for listening 32 years later, but there are two things about the Charlotte show that are particularly special in a tour of many great shows. First, the complete connection to the audience with SV. After many, many years of listening to the song, I never fully "got it" until I heard the Charlotte show. Second, BBJ. While again I prefer the NY performance, the Charlotte show has an incredible performance that makes me wonder whether, while they were playing, the building was levitated, the earth was spinning faster or some other phenomenon was occuring.

The best version of YCAGWYW on the 72 tour has to be Philly Special 1st show -
not only is Taylor's solo brilliant his octave riff on the chorus part sure shows the world he can hold down the rhythm.

Taylor's solo on YCAGWYW from Pittsburg is always brilliant

Thanks for the article, kind of funny that even back then the critics mentioned that Stones show was pretty much the same as last time around.. Perect for this site.

The article comes from this fantastic site: [stoneslib.homestead.com]

It has articles from each show on the '72 tour as well as a gallery of pictures from many shows.

Listened to Indianapolis last night - brilliant. You know, w/a little remastering, that boot could be brought up to Winterland Stars sound quality! It's complete and the sound is consistent!
