OT most underated musicians of the last 25 years
Date: July 10, 2006 15:17

who does everyone feel is a good drummer or guitarist or bass player of the last 25 years that when you mention them people are like who. i hate to name mine because most are 80's hard rock musicians but i will anyway.

drummer: tommy lee: motley crue
frankie banali: hughes/thrall, quiet riot, w.a.s.p., heavy bones
Bobby Rondinelli: solo, black sabbath, blue oyster cult, rainbow

guitar: george lynch: dokken, lynch mob, solo
carlos cavazo: quiet riot
yngwie malsteen: alcatrazz, steeler, solo
michael angelo batio: solo, nitro
chris Impellitteri: solo
chris poland: megadeth, solo, OHM

bass: rudy sarzo: ozzy osbourne, whitesnake, quiet riot, dio

vocalist: Graham Bonnet: MSG, rainbow, solo, alcatrazz, Impellitteri

yes i know somehow everyone from quiet riot but the singermade it on here and no they are not my favorite band other than the stones. they aren't even in my top ten so that shows you how much i actually listened to what they were playing and not what band they were from but look at who rudy sarzo and frankie banali played for damn what a list between the two.

I can agree with a lot of those names. But out of that group the most overated is Tommy Lee. Im a drummer and ive seen him live before and he is awful.

Izzy Stradlin

He's written a lot more for Guns n' Roses than most people know. I saw him in Nijmegen recently with the new Guns n'Roses (wich is the same as Axl with some hired musicians by the way). Axl's singing was remarkably good I must say. He reached them high notes without problems, that's been different in the past..

For me the higlight of the show was Izzy making a surprise appearance for some songs!

Listen to my new album on www.bowemusic.nl!

Richard Thompson. If you haven't heard him then buy some of his CDs and check him out!

Roy Buchanan- I am only recently discovering him

Stone Gossard- Because in addition to being a great guitar player, he is the sonic architect of Pearl Jam but chooses to leave the spotlight to Eddie. Check out his Mother Love Bone and Green River records too.

Steve Conte- Filling the Johnny Thunders seat in the reconstituted New York Dolls. An excellent guitarist, very exciting

George Thorogood- Because he is The King Of Rock And Roll and nobody notices. Go see him next time he comes through your town for proof!

I like GT alot, but he's more entertainer than "musician" these days.

Buchanan - good call - possibly the greatest unsung guitarist ever.

Thompson - love him - but be prepared to be depressed after a few minutes.....

sure - but nobody mentions him (or shouldn't) as an underrated musician...

Bass: Carl Radle
Drums: Chad Smith
Guitar: Elliott Easton

Also, how can anyone say Tommy Lee is a "terrible" or "awful" drummer... he's definitely got a peculiar style, sort of a "heavy driving" sound but it's the exact sound that works for Motley Crue... he wouldn't be the right drummer for the Stones or Springsteen, but to say he's "awful" is absurd.

Good topic. I'm going to conveniently ignore the "of the last 25 years" part, tho.

Jefferson Airplane - Sure, everybody knows White Rabbit and Somebody To Love but most people don't know much else. They were one of the best bands of the '60s, a notch below the Stones, Beatles, Who and Dylan, but right up there with bands like the Byrds, the Doors, Cream and the Grateful Dead.

Their original songs are way better than the Dead's in my opinion (and I like the Dead a lot) but these days the Dead usually gets first nod when mentioning '60s psychedlic jam bands. Proabably because the Dead were together a lot longer and their tours became a travelling carnival, but in the '60s the Airplane were better and more popular than the Dead, hands down. The Airplane had three great singers in Grace Slick, Marty Balin and Paul Kantner - their vocal duels in concert are otherwordly. Plus one of the most under rated guitar/bass combos ever in Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady.

Also - Warren Zevon. One of the best singer-songwriters of all-time. Not quite up there with Dylan and Springsteen but not too far off either. But he's tons better than guys who got a lot more recognition such as Bob Seger, John Mellencamp, Tom Petty and Jackson Browne.

ok how is George Thorogood a multi million selling artist whos played all the time on classic rock radio underrated? but also if you notice he barely writes any songs and his solos are simplistic comprised of the same 3 chords. awesome and rocking as hell GT is but excellent musician he is not.

Hey Keefriff- I don't listen to any of the guys you mentioned- so no commnet on them.

I've always liked the Vaughn Brothers. I know Stevie's been gone for a while- not sure if thier underrated- but Stevie was off-the-charts talented- very similar to Hendrix. Jimmy is very good too although not in that "special" catagory like his bro.

don't give me that ole one two, one two three four

bigfrankie you could have named some of your own then. i never would say the vaughn brothers are underrated, almost every guitar player i know can tell you who they are. maybe thats just here though.

If you want to talk about bands that never really got their due then let me throw in Grand Funk Railroad. IMO they should be considered in the top ten list of great American bands. Mark Farner was/is an excellent guitarist as well as a great song writer. They performed some really quality music in the early 70's. I'M YOUR CAPTAIN...YEAH,YEAH,YEAH!!!

Derek Trucks - he's starting to make a name for himself but was already showing veteran guitarists up long before he was even able to grow facial hair. Ask a young guitarist nowadays and they probably haven't heard of him (yet). The guy should be more well-known than what he is.
