Stones Reference in a Springsteen Song

Got a copy of "Devils & Dust" the other day, and got a chuckle out of this lyric:

"Love leaves nothin' but shadows & vapor
We go on as is our sad nature
Now it's some old Stones
Song the band is trashin'
But if you feel like dancin'
Baby, I'm askin' "

From "All The Way Home"

Duh.

Springsteen is every bit as huge a Stones fan as Van Zandt is - probably more as Van Zandt's big passion was collecting old R&B singles (he shares a huge archive with Southside Johnny)

"when i was a kid growin up - we just wanted to BE The Rolling Stones"

someone who has covered numerous Stones classics in concert - Dead flowers, HTW, the last time, not fade away, street fighting man, etc - hardly needs a pointer on how to be a fan.

For the most part yes. He has made a few handful of great songs (Glory Days ----> Biceps rock). And he makes some good career choices just like the Stones. I just, for the most part, don't like his music. It's a bit too "I'm-a-working-man-from-New-Jersey-and-I-still-get-by".

a fine synopsis if you still think its 1984...or get him mixed up with no-talent one-trick ponies like Bon Jovi for some reason

I never was a Springsteen fan. He came to Germany in 2003 for the Rising Tour and I thought, "well, I should probably go see him just to say I did." I bought "Greatest Hits" and "The Rising" as primers. They were OK, but not the Stones and definately my alltime favorite - the Allman Brothers.

I went to the concert in Ludwigshafen and it just blew me away. I've never seen a more lively rock'n roll performance in my life. I mean, everyone was on fire. Over the past three years I've added all of Springsteen's albums to my collection except for the newley released live album originally recorded on the Born to Run tour. That'll come - I'm just waiting for it to come down in price.

I saw Springsteen again in May in Frankfurt for the Seeger Sessions show and it was just awesome. It even converted my wife as well. AOL streamed video of one song per show on the Seeger Sessions tour (18 songs total) and there are a couple of downloadable DVD torrents over on Jungleland with great pro-shot quality. Absolutely amazing.

Springsteen is the only performer that makes me homesick - that makes me long to be back in the USA. I don't know why - there's just something about him that reminds about how fantastic the United States really is despite its shortcomings. The Seeger Sessions album is a fine addition as well. These are all songs all Americans know, but only in arrangements we wish had been around when we were growing up.

The guy's fantastic. He may take a while to grow on you, but when you finally get him, you can't get enough.

Peach out,

Duane

The constant Springsteen praising here on IORR made me curious (never liked Bruce), so I tried again and find myself hooked on Devils & Dust now! Great album.

tour ends with 3 shows in Dublin and one in Belfast. They all sold out in 25 minutes this morning (34,000 tickets). Only managed to get Belfast and the 3rd Dublin one which was added once the other two were gone. Might have a connection to get one of the other Dublin shows. Cant wait, although my credit card is now on life support

The night that the Stones were inducted in the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame. Bruce's wife, Patty Scialfa, was dancing on their table when the Stones performed. I know that on her 1st solo album, Keith was on a couple of tunes,

Springsteen rules. In my mind the Boss is up there with the very best, i.e Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan. I only wish he'd tour with the E Street Band really soon.

Gazza - Like yourself, I'm also a minority in that I'm a huge fan of both the Stones and Bruce. Just wanted to ask about this post. I remember SFM from the 84/85 tour and NFA as part of the She's the One medley in 75/76. My question is when did Bruce play DF, HTW & The Last Time? Thanks.

he played Dead Flowers at a club show in a duet with Steve Earle - late 80's I think, although it may have been done a few times

HTW was played as a part of a medley with Darlington County on a few shows on the '99 Reunion tour

The Last Time was played in Cleveland on New years Day 1979 on the final stop of the Darkness tour

Not fade away/shes the one was a regular part of the '78 tour

this is a very fine post. Especially the paragraph about being homesick. To look at it from a European perspective, that kind of music - as well as the music by many other great American songwriters down the years - has opened up a lot about American popular culture to many people who have never lived there. Which isnt a bad thing at all, I think. Its also been very educational if youre (like me) a bit of a fanatic for connecting the music you grew up with and are still very passionate about back to its roots (the Stones, of course, have done the same thing in many ways)

Gazza, if your connection does not come through, you should be able to count on released tickets at the venue on the days of the shows. As I'm sure you know, that's always a constant with Springsteen. Even here in Los Angeles, the smallest (excluding Asbury Park rehearsal shows) and toughest show of the U.S., I know that at least 40 people got released tickets at the box office by being arriving there by late morning.

Electric-duane, that was an excellent post. Seeing Bruce live for the first time in 1984 turned me from being a casual fan into a massive fan and I have seen him on every subsequent tour, always multiple shows, as a result. I personally find his shows to be more rewarding than seeing Stones' shows.
Bruce takes a lot of chances live that the Stones rarely do, pulling out rare songs at every show, usually giving around 3 hours of performance. I've seen Bruce 34 times and have seen him play almost 200 different songs (around 170-175 released songs and another 20 or so unreleased original and cover songs including Street Fighting Man).

As far as Bruce being a Stones fan, it's documented that he went to see them in 1989 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. I'm sure he's seen them multiple times over the years and he has said that he saw them in 1960s. Also, remember that last July when the Stones were rehearsing in Toronto, when Bruce was in town for a concert, he and Mick had dinner together.

I don't think that Keith appeared on "Rumble Doll", Patti's first solo album. I think she appeared on "Talk is Cheap" and she also appeared on several tracks on "Undercover".
