Now I LOVE Voodoo Lounge

Always liked VL, but I just downloaded Voodoo Brew and disc 1 "The Alternate VL" BLEW MY MIND. They should have released THIS and Don Was should have never produced for them. Even the songs that I didn't really care for sound so raw and just "Stonesy". I am never listening to the official version again. This is probably old news to most of you here, but I just discovered this and I absolutely love it. VL would have been a classic Stones album had it not been for the slick over production.

The album sounds so clean, the first demos were so cool.

It would have been the modern day Exile had it been released like this Voodoo Brew version. Sorry for being a little over enthusiastic about this, but this is really a revelation for me. With a little less "production" I think our Stones are very capable of putting out something raw and rockin again. Don't think Mick would let it happen, though. Anyway, if anyone hasn't heard the Alternate VL, you definitely need to.

VL is one my favourite albums period [any period]. I don't make any excuses for that. I like it...always have ;^)

Don Was ruined VL. Or some overglosser, whoever it was.
But the rougher versions of "Love is Strong" with Keith on vox, with the Bass thunping and driving, the loose lyrics is so much better. Would have been s GREAT album opener. Then the older YGMR with Jagger on vox, "Baby Break it Down" before it became cleaned and perfected to the point of staleness.
Leave "Zip Mouth Angel" and "You got it Made" and "Honest man" on there instead of "Jugular" and "Sparks" and it woujld have been a better album IMO.

"You Got It Made" is one of their best songs period. Ditto "So Young" and "Jump On Top Of Me". Add these three and delete Jugular, Sparks, and Sweethearts. Now you're talking.

I have always been a big fan of Voodoo and even really like the songs that many people here dislike such as Sweethearts Together and Brand New Car. Creatively the Stones were on in 1993/1994, Mick had just come out with Wandering Spirit at the time as well.

Hey, Dog, I like "Car" too. Can't understand all the grief it gets.

It's not the songs per se. It's that they couldn't quit polishing and polishing until tyhere wasn't enough gritty core left.

BNC is a gem - this is what the Stones do best - a slinky blooze - what's not to like? I don't get the criticism of it.....

I never got it either, such a good tune. Judging by outtakes and b-sides this could have been a double disc release like the new Chilli Peppers.

I love the song Honest Man as well, too bad they never did anything with that one.

It's definitely one of those albums one didn't think very much of when it was first released. However, I started playing it a bit on the Licks-tour, and it really grew. Now, I hold it among their 8 best albumd. And that's brilliant!
