I had as much as six until late last year but I decided to slim my collection down to a '98 R8 Les Paul, '77 Martin D28 and a Guild D512 12 String. I'm not sure about the year on the later though.

A lot of answers to your question. One might be if the beginner is a yougster or an adult. Smaller hands tend to be able to grip the thinner neck of a Fender easier than a Gibson.

That said my advice would be to just purchase whatever your fancy desires and then just play away as often as you can or as often as you enjoy it.

1967 Harmony arch top, f-holes. Great for acoustic slide, high action.
1982 Reissue of 1952 Telecaster...GREAT guitar, fat neck, low action....screams through my Fender super reverb, 1972 model.
1952 Sure 520, "Green Bullet"--but all the paint is gone, so its a "Silver Bullet" harmonica mic.
2004 Sure 520DX "Green Bullet" with built in volume control.

Standard, marine band harmonicas...they are the best harps.

I totally agree with this. It sounds really corny but my advice is to buy a cheaper version of whatever kind of guitar your favorite electric guitarist uses. When i was just starting out as a kid, I bought for my first guitar a cheap copy of a Gibson Melody Maker, because I had a poster on my wall of Keith Richards playing one and I liked the look. Then as I learned more about guitars and how to play, I got a Les paul copy, then I eventually got a real Gibson Les Paul Custom (it's a '78).

For beginners, I really like the Mexican Fenders (Stratocaster, Telecaster) and Epiphone Gibsons (Les Paul, SG, etc) for beginners, etc. They are cheap but playable. Once you learn to play better, you can move up to something better and more serious. But it wouldn't hurt to listen to whatever guitarists you like and consider getting a beginning guitar that is something similar (Keith Richards = Tele, Clapton = Strat, Jimmy Page = Les Paul, etc.) picking the type and style of guitar based upon what kind of stuff you think you will want to play.

Yeah, the JB "Hell" Lp simply cooks..."Papa Dont Take No Mess" is the greatest funk of all time, imho.

it all depends on the cash you have on hand....but I always bought the best I could at the time. Started with a tokai Tele, then traded it and a 66 melody maker for my current Tele Never had to upgrade the Tele I have now, but I could use a new acoustic, but I mostly play the tele, so not gonna sweat it.
