Monkey Man-which version is better?

which version do you prefer, the voodoo lounge lisa version , or
the post voodoo mick only version, although both are great i prefer the mick only version, it gives mick more freedom to do his thing, for example the HBO version is outstanding imho, more haunting than the lisa version

I think the post-Voodoo is better. Lisa is very good, but other than for Gimme Shelter I don't really have much use for her. I cringe when I hear her on Jumping Jack Flash or Start Me Up, for example.

I prefer the Mick only version. The song doesn't need a female voice, like Gimme Shelter does, so there's no need for Lisa to step up in Monkey Man.

All live versions have lacked Nicky Hopkins piano (Chuck does a terrible job) and the punch of Keith's guitar and Jagger's vocals. In my opinion it is one of the songs that never worked live, just as Gimme Shelter never worked again after 1975.

It definately worked live in 2003, FF (LL) version.

One of the few songs where there's a constant effort by the Keith and Ronnie combo to actually fill the song with licks that matter and licks that are unique (compared to the misplaced simplified Chuck Berry licks you hear Keith do on almost any other song these days).

I confess that I like the some licks versions even more than the original!

A Q for you boot experts. I have a Ronnie Wood boot, all I can remember it has a black cover, with a great instrumental jam on the Monkey - riff. Any info? And who is the bass player?

is it a concert? at the July 74 Kilburn gig Ron Wood & Band did a version of Shirley that segued into Monkey Man - very cool!
the bass player at that gig was Willie Weeks.

as for Monkey Man ... the Four Flicks version grooves me a lot -
we just looooooooooooove to play the blues :E

My favourite live version is the one one Four Flicks / Live Licks (I was at that gig and Monkey Man was one of the highlight of the evening) but the one played at the Paradiso in 1995 was also great.

Ok, I made some homework!

I would NEVER have thought that he could have been the same guy on IORR

C

How did you end up recording on the Rolling Stones’ “It’s Only Rock ’n’ Roll (But I Like It)” [It’s Only Rock ’n’ Roll, Virgin]?

It came about through Keith Richards. He was hanging out with Ronnie [Wood] when we were recording Ronnie’s record, and Keith said, “We’ve got this track, man, and we’d like for you to put some bass on it.” And I said, “Yeah, of course.” Andy Newmark and I drove out to Mick Jagger’s place, which ended up being a castle. After we got there, we sat around waiting for an hour, and I finally said, “Hey man, are we going to do this?” Within five minutes we were doing it. They had a mobile studio set up in the back, and I listened to the tune and picked up my bass and started playing. It was funny—Mick was standing in front of me and it was like he was directing me, but he was dancing! [Laughs.] It was amazing, man. I’m standing there playing and listening to the music and looking at him and just feeling ... pretty magical.

Monkey Man is one song I think they did very good versions of, after digging it up again in 94. The best live versions is from the Licks tour, especially the one that was broadcasted on rs.com, and copied to div soundboard-bootlegs.
(But my favourite is the studio-version.)

despite Lisa's overwrought vocals, I still think the VL tour versions were best among the live outings....

But they were very close, the Voodoo Lounge and the Licks version.
But Licks-MMan was a bit shorter at the end. So I guess it's the different performances that should be measured. We're both right...very diplomatic.

splitting hairs. I can't think of a single song they've done live (aside from 19Ncool smiley since '89 that has had any major surgery done on it, arrangement-wise.

LET IT BLEED - Track 8, can't be beat....live is fine but it's a different song. Just like STRAY CAT BLUES live in Paris on the DVD box. It's all super fast and misses the whole nasty feeling of the original (even YA YA's still captured the mood somewhat) But I'm still glad they're pulling out the over looked gems and finally doing them (but MONKEY MAN would have been much more interesting in 1969) CAN'T YOU HEAR ME KNOCKING would have been great with Mick Taylor....oh well.... Better late then never...

Except for the Paradiso Gimme Shelter version on the b-side of the Stripped Wild Horses.

But to be hones, nothing beats the studio version of Gimme Shelter: the best song ever in giving you a threat'ning feeling...

The original version on Let It Bleed is superior. Honestly, I very seldom find the official recorded or bootlegged live versions of songs better than the officially released studioversions. The magic of being at a great Rolling Stones concert has to be experienced. Monkey Man has blown me away at concerts, but listening to the livetrack afterwards didn´t do much compared to the Let It Bleed recording.

Kind regards,
Gunnar

Monkey man is only good on Let it bleed and Gimmie Shelter was truly great in 1975 but has never worked since. Not that it has been really bad, it just doesnt swing anymore.

I love the 1995 version of Gimme Shelter. It's as good as in 72 and 73 IMO

Monkey Man: Live Licks version

Gimme Shelter: a lot of great versions in 1989, 1995, 1998 and fewer in 2003.
