Elvis didnt do much touring in '78, '79 and '80, Rooster. A non-existent heartbeat was the main reason, unfortunately.

Stonedmike, I was going to say the same year. 81-82 was when I was in high school and unfortunately didn't see alot of the bands, some due to financial reasons and others due to the fact they didn't come to Vancouver. Did get to see Van Halen in 81 and 82.
Stones 81 US and 82 Europe
The Who 82 US
AC/DC 81 Those About To Rock
Van Halen 81 Fair Warning Tour, 82 Diver Down tour
Rod Stewart Tonight I'm Yours tour
Also, whole slew of British/Europe metal bands hitting North America: Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Scorpions, Leppard, Motorhead.

If not 81-82, then 1984. Saw VH again in the 1984 tour, Springsteen Born in the USA tour. Also, Prince toured for Purple Rain and Madonna did her Virgin tour (not a fan). Bryan Adams had Reckless and the Jacksons did their Victory tour. To me, it seemed that was the year that all of those bands peaked in popularity.

Clapton never was a heavy junkie... much more of an alcoholic...

In any event he was anything but lost in 1971... that's when Derek and the Dominoes were at their height.

BTW, who's Maestro Bob ??

On the Concert for Bangladesh-TV-special, they say that Eric Clapton never showed up....and that he stayed home all the time, he couldn't be trusted.
And Clapton himself says something about being "lost" at that time, having some kind of personal troubles. I assumed it was on dope...but I'm not a Clapton-expert.

> BTW, who's Maestro Bob ??

It's Bob Dylan.

Prince's best tours (IMO) were the 'Sign o' the times' tour in '87 and 'Lovesexy' the following year. Springsteen's Tunnel of Love tour in '88 was far superior to '84-85 for me, so throw those two in with the start of Dylan's Never Ending Tour, Neil Young's much underrated tour with the Blue Notes, and 1988 was a pretty good year for live shows, even without a Stones tour (although we did get a Winos tour which was good and Jagger's only solo tour, which wasnt)

1975. Two Faces tours and a Stones tour. We might have seen something like that in 1972 also. This is the USA I'm speaking of. Anyway, Ronnie Wood was a busy boy that year.

In my opinion 1981-1986, rock wasnt "cool" at that time, only Duran Duran and such shit, you could go and see Iggy,The Ramones,The Clash,Gun Club and a whole lot of other great bands, always manage to get a ticket ,and boy was it cheap then compared to now. but I know everyone loves their youth smiling smiley

My personal best was 1994.
Kicked off 12/31/93-1/1/94 actually with an early/late show with Cheap Trick and Dramarama and another Cheap Trick show a few days later.
Ramones twice (with Frank Black opening)
Rolling Stones twice (with Red Hot Chili Peppers and Buddy Guy)
Aerosmith 3 times
Breeders 5 times total, twice with Jon Spencer Blues Explosion
best single artist performance was Nine Inch Nails who I saw 4 times that year.
best show was Lollapalooza, both days with Beastie Boys, Smashing Pumpkins, Breeders, L7, Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds and Cypress Hill on the 2nd stage the first night. Went to both shows and saw the Breeders a total of 3 times (last 3 shows with Josephine).
Saw a fun Gwar show, Anthrax/Fight, Soundgarden, several more Cheap Trick shows, Guitar Wolf for the one and only time.
It was a great year.

Dunno about the greatest year EVER, but for me it was last year.

I saw:

Cream (london)
Oasis (at the astoria)
The doves (london)
Brian Wilson (london)
U2 (twickers)
Coldplay (london)
REM (london)
Live 8 (london)
Paul McCartney (miami)
David Gray (london)
Rolling Stones (San Francisco)

Thats basically all my favourite bands (plus some others) in the space of 6 months - May to November. Im sure i will never be this lucky again!
Plus some smaller unknown bands at my local venue in Putney, London.
