There is no way they can play outdoor shows in North Europe in September. First it is cold and rain, people do not get any days off then, and they just cancelled 6 weeks of shows. You can not fit 6 weeks into one month. And to replace the 8 shows in Germany with indoor shows would take 40 arena shows.

The worst thing is that they will not do some shows at all if they don't come in 2007. They probably know which ones already. On the other hand Licks ended in October in Switzerland which is not exactly a hot country...

About those days off bv, it is best to have a vacation in Septembersmiling smiley You lenghten Your summer a lot this way, You just need to go to for example......
Barcelonasmiling smiley.
And it is never easy to predict the wheather anyway. Last year in Poland it rained a lot during the summer but we had a month of beautiful summer wheather from mid-sept to mid-oct

I doubt that they need to charge more for an arena show than a stadium show.A stadium show is probably more costly but, then you have extra tickets that can be sold.

There were very few indoor arena shows in the U.S. from after the last Hampton '81 show through 1998.The only ones that I can recall off the top of my head were the Atlantic City '89 shows, the MSG '98 shows,& Portland '98 + a couple in Canada ('98).

Indoor shows for Europe is a fantastic idea!

I attended the Giants Stadium gig, and it's an outdoor stadium that holds 70,000 people. It was a rainy day and just too crowded!

The arena shows like Philly and MSG in NY hold around 20,000 people which is perfect, not as big as the stadium shows.

The STONES can play any venue, large or small, they put on a great show regardless of the size. Look at RIO! They rocked the crowds that night, in the heat!

Switzerland is in the middle of Europe. Fly two hours north and you are still in Europe. You might get snow in October in Norway, Sweden, Russia etc. In order to make a show you need a promoter that is putting 3 million us dollars on the table. The risk is much higher in October than in the summer. That is what I am saying.

point taken...it's a logistical nightmare, for sure.

Re: Time for a European indoor winter tour?

Yeah, a nightmare obviously, but i'm pretty sure they can deal with that. Cancelling a few shows, playing northen Europe shows first, southern Europe like Milan, Barcelone Madrid during the second half of september. Maybe they will cancel other non affected concerts to play rescheduled shows instead. They did it in 98.

Always use the indoor one at cardiff, you know that big one where the roof slides over <smiley>

if that national embarrasement, Wembley, ever gets built, that too will be available for indoor winter concerts.

Stop me if I've got this one wrong, but are some people here stating that it is impossible for an organisation like the Rolling Stones to put together a string of indoor arena shows across europe? Other bands can, so why not the Stones?

Or, are these same people simply attempting to aplogise on the Stones'behalf, for their out and out greed?

Namely, that if it don't pay, they don't play.

in a nutshell.

It is possible for the Stones to tour indoor in Europe, but the Stones are not an indoor band. They have done one - 1 - indoor tour in modern times, i.e. after becoming a popular stadium band, and that was No Security. That tour was an add-on tour after they had saturated the North American market from September 1997 until April 1998. So one year later they played a number of arena shows as an add-on, with high ticket prices, from 100 - 300 us dollars.

The Rolling Stones are expecting more than 2 million people for their 35 or so shows in Europe 2006. If they were to scale these shows down into arena size it would take 150 shows. With the same ticket price. Or may be 70 shows if they ask for 250 Euro for every ticket at every arena show. So of course it is possible. But I am not sure if the Stones want to do a tour of shows for rich people in Europe. And they don't have the time to do 150 shows. It would take almost a year.

They are too popular. That is the problem. A nice problem in the summer, when they can play outdoor, a real problem when they need to move indoor, as we don't have many closed roof stadiums in Europe.

not when they can charge more money,
for a tour of shows for rich people in the U.S.
How many of the Bigger Bang U.S tour shows, have been indoor arenas?
more than 75%?

How about a club tour?! Or they could play 6 nights at the Olympia in Paris, 6 nights at Cirkus in Stockholm, 12 at Cirkus Krone in Munich and 50 at the Astoria in London...

When Bruce Springsteen tour with the E Street Band he's as big act as the Stones. But even Bruce and E Street Band tour indoors sometimes, yesteryear (2005) they played:

14/10: Bercy, Paris
16/10: Palau Sant Jordi, Barcelona
18/10: Palamalaguti, Bologna
20/10: Velledrone, Berlin
22/10: Ahoy, Rotterdam
24/10: Globen, Stockholm
27/10: Wembley Arena, London

When the tickets are sold out they're sold out. No one requires them to do five arenashows for 15.000 people each because the stadium in the same city will hold 75.000.

Ticket price is a special thing for itself. During the Licks tour in those places they played three shows the theatre one was way too cheap if you compare size of audience to the ticket price. The reason was of course that the stadium audience subvented a big part of the theare tickets.

(No, I didn't get any theatre ticket and - Yes, I envy them who did)

After years of waiting I finally got to the Stones indoors in an arena setting in 1998. It was anti-climactic as was every arena show I've seen since. I MUCH prefer the massive spectacle and extra trappings of the outdoor show.

They could do a 30 night residency in the Sticky fingers club in Gothenburg or why not in my basement here in Stockholm???

There is an implied "free" week at the start of July to do the Nordic dates - before Nurnberg. They could do 4/5 gigs with a free day between each.

Then some of the postponed gigs would work outdoors in Sept (Paris, Madrid, Barcelona, Athens, Zagreb, Milan).

Then some stadiums have a roof (Millenium stadium in Wales) - so move the covered stadiums later to find gaps.... Here in the UK the first half of September is OK for stadium gig.

Maybe this is why it is taking time to re-work the Tour.

I don't think an indoor tour at US prices will sell. The Stones probably make the same money at a Euro stadium that they do at a US arena.

I know there enough 12-15,000 seaters in Europe to do a limited indoor tour at some point, I just think what BV and some people are trying to say is its not feasible as a replacement for current tour dates.

Also to the person who asked, I think many venues in North America might have been "reserved" but I am not sure if the band's representatives have had a green light to sign any contracts in the last month or so.
