Emotional Rescue and Black & Blue

LK, we spent the late summer of 1980 digging ER. It's no Exile, but it sure sounded good swimming, drinking, chasing girls, and just general purpose partying that summer. Great memories of those days. (Beat the hell out of listening to Urban Cowboy.)

On this board, I think, like Havo says, the pre-Beggars period is the most underrated. There's already such diversity and so many great songs there.

many fans.

If I remember, the reviews from Rock magazines were rather enthiusiastic : NME( with that first time disc sold with the issue ), Melody Maker in UK to take those famous examples. It was the audience which did not follow apart from hard-core rock fans.
Most underrated Album: Emotional rescue.

hmm---that was 74--"its only Rockn roll"

For me, there is only one. Englands Newest Hitmakers. It's an absoloute classic in my eyes. There is'nt a bad track on it and while I do prefer the UK original, the US version is flawless too.

Voodoo Lounge and It's only Rock and roll

Generally I think most of their newer stuff is underrated since many don't even give anything post Tattoo You a chance. As for underrated I would say perhaps Voodoo Lounge

I would say overall, Between the buttons gets more criticism than it deserves. Even Satanic Majisties gets more praise, Mick Himslef said he liked it. Of between the buttons he said "I hate that f***ing album" that was from the mid 80's though

Without a doubt......Some Girls....... "purists" on this board dismiss the album as unworthy of being in the same company of the big 4 or recorded much after their "golden era" to count; others bemoan the lack of respect (somewhat deserved) given to Dirty Work/Undercover and try to rehabiliate those two but .....Some Girls is seminal. They were the biggest stars in the world and could have at that moment walked away or just blown up. Instead they wrote and produced an album that is as current today as it was in 1978. You won't find Miss You or Shattered or Respectable, etc. etc., on the oldies radio station that's for sure!!!(well not yet anyway)

Some Girls is awesome.

do people really think it is underrated?

I think 95% loves Some Girls. It's not in the big 4, but in mosts people's big 5 or big 6. Isn't it?

Most underrated are Emotional Rescue & Steel Wheels
I think the majority have SG in the top 6 or so. I rate higher. But don't think this one is underrated. Although I do know some people who think Some Girls is the best album - I won't go that far!

Well I think that's a key point......I think that when you discuss the Stones it's the about the big 6 and not the big 4 which is what differentiates them from mere mortal bands..............

Re: Most Underrated Stones Album....

No, it's as good as impossible to have the big 6 or 7. It's a like "what's your favourite 6 senses"? Dylan, Springsteen, Beatles, Young etc. also has a big 3 or big 4.

GHS

........intuition is a 6th sense. Intuitively, Some Girls means as much to many as the big four......so I'd beg to differ

A lot of Stones albums are underrated, but Undercover must be #1.
I actually seen this album with 'beware of the dog' kind of sections in magazines. It seems a lot of people look at this album the way people look at McCartneys Press To Play (which is in fact a rather poor album - BTW I'm not a McCartney basher, I love the dude). Undercover could be in my Stones Top 10. The problem with this album is the horrid production & 80s sound, but the band is hot as hell playing fantastic tunes.

It's Only Rock'n'Roll, cannot say I like Goat's Head Soup very much myself, maybe I still need to discover it. For example, I didn't like Exile On Main Street at first and I think I am quite right when I say that very few like it after hearing it for the first time. I took it to pieces (song by song) and that's how it became one of my favourites. But that's another story. Of the recent albums, it's got to be Bridges To Babylon.

GHS gets my vote for the most underrated also. It's in my top 5.

I really don't think GHS is underrated. I think it gets its rops from fans and critics alike (it does now anyway)

Undercover, IMO, kicks a bunch of ass and is mostly lumped into the ER & DW crap of the 80s. Dont get me wrong, I find things I love on every Stones album... but Undercover is strong from start to finnish. It is in my top 5 Stones albums but stays underrated by fans and critics.

I think the problem with GHS is it's too laid back - too much of a Jamacian Refer album. Plus hard rockin' songs that were left off like "Criss Cross Mind" is just a sin...could have been another classic after BB/LIB/GYYYO/SF/EOMS....

most underrated: UNDERCOVER - No Doubt what-so-ever
