Best Keith Richards solo album

What do you guys think ? My favourite is "Main Offender", just love the whole atmosphere on this album. The sound is great, and the whole album seems so wonderfully laid back...

I'd go for Talk Is Cheep. There are some amazing songs on Main Offender....but there's also some fillers. Talk Is Cheep is solid all the way (almost).

there's only two - so there is no "best," only "better" and I'll take the first....

Main Offender hands down, dirty rock n roll.

Not Guilty

The best Keith Richards album, imho, would be either the Toronto Tapes or the Longview Farm sessions. This is Keith playing the music he likes, no matter how it will sell or whether it sounds like Keith Richards or not.

So I think I'd vote for the Wingless Angels stuff - even though it's not a proper Keith Richards album, it's imho Keith producing music he likes. The Wingless Angels project is a big part of Keith's website.

I don't like most of Keith' solo stuff, it always reminds me of late 80s, early 90s black background-singers with short pants and horrible haircuts.
I still don't understand what the hell is so good in background singers.
I find them absolutely embarrising, without all those silly 80s-"Here We Go Again"-shit and sounds, Talk Is Cheap and Main Offender could be some good albums.

PS: I like Hate It When You Leave, Locked Away, Demon and No Mistake, though.

two studio and one live album!
i like them all.
"words of wonder" is a nice try on reggae i think.

Clearly "Unkown Dreams" (Outsider Bird Records) - although the speed is wrong. But then: Maybe that adds to the "atmosphere".

Talk is Cheap hands down was the best. The fact he finally did one and put out such a great album was fantastic. The second one was more of the same without much new being done.

Talk Is Cheap, but I like his live cd the best, some of those songs work better live. Still nothing comes close to Mick's Wandering Spirit. I wish all the songs on these solo albums were used for the Stones albums. We could have had a classic Stones album.

i agree with hound dog: Talk Is Cheap, but I also like his live cd the best!

I prefer Main Offender. A better sound and more organic feel. I think there's more filler on the first album, and more of a self-conscious attempt to hit a number of musical bases.

I love it all but Talk Is Cheap is the one I go back to the most.

That album was such a surprise to me. I was driving accross the US with a buddy who was also a Stones fan the week that came out so we listened to it alot. I remember expecting an album of rockers in the vein of Happy with two or three Chuck Berry covers thrown in. I remember being kind of shocked that it was such a groover but it grew on me quickly.

Talk Is Cheap is what a solo album should be, something Keith felt like playing rather than Stones-lite or Mick-less Stones.

I have always thought that Talk Is Cheap was an important turning point in another way too. Throughout the late '70's and most of the 80's, Ronnie always seemed to be Keith's extracurricular sidekick: New Barbarians, Aretha Franklin's JJF, The Dirty Strangers, etc. From Talk Is Cheap on, you don't see them together outside the Stones as much.

Main Offender

I agree with cc, MO is more organic and Keith and the band seem more confident.
Can't decide which song I like best, but "Will but You Won't" is a little-known delight where the whole band really cooks.

Sure wish Keith and the Winos would do it again!

Keith's best solo album? The one he SHOULD have made in the 70s!

That's like picking which hand you like better. Gotta have 'em all.

Talk Is Cheap is far and wide my favorite. Main Offender's first couple of tracks are great but for the most part the 2nd side of the vinyl seems pretty weak. Talk Is Cheap, on the otherhand, is great start to finish. It Means Alot is just killer. Throw it on at a party and watch people get in the groove...

Talk Is Cheap. Main Offender sounds like a sketch for an album, like an early take.

Talk Is Cheap by a mile. MO sounds like a bunch of demos and jams.

Main Offender shades it for me, thanks to Hate It When You Leave - the best song Keith has written in the last two decades
