because theres no connection between the individual ability of a referee and the footballing achievements of the country where he happens to come from

besides, the ref was from Norway, wasnt he? They're certainly no minnows in world terms. They might not have a side as good as they did in the mid/late 90's when they were in the top 10 in the world, but they still play the game at a high level.

Frank Rijkaard!!! Only the 6th or 7th coach who also won the Cup as player. One of the other coaches/player who did this was of course the famous Johan Cruijff.
Also a Dutchman!!

My most memorable memory (!) of this match will be Barca scrambling around like monkeys, trying to salvage some dignity from this match!

i'd like to congratulate Barca on their win tonight

the ref was crap to BOTH sides (should have let the goal stand and kept goalie on, but he did give Arsenal a free kick for nothing from which they scored) so all things balance out in the end


i'll be telling my sulking Arsenal supporting friends tales of the Villa battering Barca 3-0 back in 1983 in the Super Cup tomorrow whilst reminding them they'll never be a true 'big' club until they life the European Cup. that should cheer em up ;o)


by the way. if anyone can tell me who the Barca goalkeeper was in the Villa Vs Barca match in '83 (he should have been sent off for literally kicking Cowans up in the air) i'd be most grateful. and if he still lives around the city i might pop in to see him next week and kick him up in the air

If you are a referee in Italy, England, Spain or Germany, you have to lead a top game every few weeks. IMO a referee from an african country can't become as good as an european (look at the referees in the last world cup). And I mean the level of the competition (like also of Holland) in Norway isn't that high.

Referees are controversial all over the world. No off-side, correct red card, What's there to argue....What happened to Barcelona last year at Chelsea's? And the referee was Colinna..

Is not the referees fault...Let's just congratulate the best European team of the moment.
