Atlanta 2006 - A classic boot?
Posted by: Elmo Lewis ()
Date: May 17, 2006 15:09

I think it will become a must-have ala Brussels, Leeds, Perth, Handsome, etc.. Here's why -

1. drake's usual excellent recording and mixing job

2. A setlist which includes Sawy, Worried About You, and Midnight Rambler, among others.

3. Keith guitar goes out during HTW and GOOMC. One gets to hear Ronnie's work clearly (for better or worse, I think it's interesting).

4. The banter bewteen drake and the legendary ohnonotyouagain between songs (sometimes during songs).

5. The chicks hitting on drake during WAY. She gave the CDs their name (IMO) - "Yeah, Right"!

6. I was at this show!

Thanks drake and ohno. Cheers!

What makes it not a classic is that it is not soundboard.

True, it's not a soundboard, but it is one of the clearest and best audience recording one can get. walder - I'll get you one if you'll let me know how.

I'm not sure if it is a classic boot, but it was damn sure a classic show. Easily one of the best, if not the best of the 19 shows I've seen since 1978.

I like the Atlanta audience recording even better than the Rio broadcast CDs.

Drake's Atlanta is the best ABB boot so far and his Nashville was the best from 40 Licks.

It was the best performance I have seen since 1978. My best Stones experience was in Vredenburg though. A Club show from 5 feet away with all of them right in your face can't be beat! But Atlanta was an absolutely excellent show. All seemed in great spirits. They were all on fire that night. Fourth row seemed to make it even better too! : ) I was at first wondering if I felt it was so great because of being that close during that show, but it didn't take long to find out the whole place felt exactly the same way it did not matter were one sat.... I mean stood! So, so glad we got to see that one! The October show there was a bit disappointing for me. To me it seemed that they just weren't into the show. Not sure if doing the video shoot for "Rain Fall Down" took something out of them or what but I just felt like they were going thur the motions more or less.

I was at the show too, and would say this: would be evn better if it was a DVD. because at 06 standards there were some timelss moments, visually.

Exactly! Sometimes an audience recording has more "feel" to it even thought the sound quality may suffer. Not too much on this one though. Again, I enjoy the bullshit between drake and ohno.

sometimes the audience adds to the "atmosphere".....perfect example: Altamont '69 "The Killer Festival (great title) boot.....feels like you're right in the middle of the chaos

The between song banter ruins it for me. It's the same on Coloumbus

I think the Houston and Japan shows are the best

yes - but constant, drunken bantering does not equate to the ambience of any recording.

I don't see what the big deal about Houston '05 is.Yes,there's a great Dead Flowers but, otherwise,I prefer Saint Paul '05.I don't have Atlanta '06 yet but,I'm waiting on this year's first show from Tokyo.
As far as talking on an audience recording goes,it CAN be cool if it is kept under control & kept to the time between songs. The Stones' No Expectations duet with Kravitz from Cleveland 1994 is ruined by talk during the song.If I remember, some drunk clown is moaning about how he thinks they have gotten old just because they decided to play one non-rocker from Beggars Banquet.

Houston 05 and Memphis 05 (Memphis by drake) both have a good sound quality. I try to get a boot from all the shows I've been to (only 9), but sometimes the sound quality is very poor - Orlando 81 and Columbia 94 come to mind. Still waiting for Atlanta 05 to turn up.

Re: Atlanta 2006 - A classic boot?

I know that Houston 2005 technically has good sound quality but,to me it sounds like one of the many sterile soundboards out there. It just sounds like it has no guts.I prefer something that sounds like trademark Rolling Stones for one example I Just Want To Make Love To You from the b-stage on the Stones Age Opening Night Oakland '99 audience recording - something you can play loud.
Maybe part of the reason why some people have such a low opinion of the modern Stones is because they are listening to the wrong recordings.?
