There is a viking ship museum in Oslo. It is quite unique actually. Real original viking ships - real big ones - with space for may be 50+ people,
around 1200 years old, wooden, have been digged out of graves and are now on display, so that you can see how these guys actually were sitting and rowing in large lines on this ships, and went all over Europe and even outside. They used to bury the head viking with his ship and lots of jewelry weapons and food (some animals) so that he would have a nice rest in his grave. And then they made a large heap above it. Some of these heaps have been dug out and that is the viking ships on display in Oslo. Others are preserved and will just stay where they are, as graves. You can see grave heaps several places in Norway.

See the home page of the viking ship museum in Oslo:

Thanks for joining in, Bjørnulf.

Baboon, there was a viking who was shot in his heart, with an arrow.
He dragged out the arrow with his own hands,
and there were lots of blood, and some white veins,
He said :

"Kongen har fødd meg vel,
fet jeg er rundt hjarte-røttane"

...and then he fell dead on the ground.

If you translate that, you're good! I tried, but it didn't sound good.

Ha-ha! Yes, it is hard.
The closest I got, was
"I see the king has fed me well,
my heart is full of fat"
But it's not good, it sound.....stupid.

Hmm, interesting thread here, gentlemen
I like those viking boats and stories about them.
now what does samis exactly mean? are the finnish people called like that?

Re: May 17: Long Live Ye Auld Norsemen and -Women!

Thanks for asking, open-g!
The samis (or "same" as we say in Norway), is like the Indians in America. They've been here for a long time, most probably they came from Russia or Mongolia. But it's not THAT long ago, because Scandinavia was covered in ice and snow, and was much to cold, a while back.
The samis lives in both Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia....but they differ a bit from each place. There's A LOT of names being used about them, instead of samis. It depended if they lived in the mountain, or by the coast, etc.
Anyway, they had a great deal of knowledge that the Europeans (Norwegians for instance) didn't have.
Norwegian boats or equipment came to short.....and the samis knew where to build a house....close to both the fields and to the water, so they could survive even if there were no fish one year.
They helped eachother in the beginning, but after a while, the Norwegians stole their land, and gave them taxes.
For 100s of years "sami" was a curse-word. Just like the Indians vs. Americans.
But not much violence, just rasicm. The sami-kids was shipped to schools to learn about Jesus and Norwegian language etc, and wasn't a part of the society.
Knut Hamsun speaks bad about the samis, just like Dostojevskij about jews.
But around 1960 or 1970, the samis had a revival....just like Rock&Roll and feminism.
Nowadays, the samis have the same (actually better) rights than the norwegian. But most of them are integrated, so you can't see who they are. But there's a few ones living as they used yoo, way up north...with deers and stuff.
Sorry for writing too much about this. But it's really important history....
It seems like every nation in the world have done something bad to the native people.

The reason there is so much information about this viking-years, is because a lot of it was written down. Some kings had his own writer....to write down what happened. Even though some of it are exaggurated....a lot of it is true, the proof is visable today.
It's really facinating these boats that could sail over the whole world....a long time before the others could....in that speed at least. And the vikings was also strong enough to carry them, when they had to.

And here's one of norwegian boats discovering America (1000 years too late).
But they sailed over from Norway, that is true.

This is a restored vikinghouse, situated a bit south of me. I was there last autumn. It looks bizarre with that big house in an empty district.
But the house actually lied exactly there, in the same size, 1000 years ago. The got so much tax from the samis, and had good trading-connections with Europe. Some people up here were really wealthy. But around the year 1030 came the downfall.
Here's the huge house...it's a museum, which you can walk into....you can even borrow it for a big viking party with beer, grilled cows, actors walking among you and costumes, but that costs a fortune)

1030...that year is often used as the downfall of the Vikings, not Norway. (sorry)
The Norwegian king was killed in a big battle...at that time the king was in the army.

The norwegian viking Harald Haarfagre, (which means Harald "Big hair",he had that name because he refused to cut his hair, untill he had becommen THE king of Norway) gathered Norway to a one-king-country in 800.
It used to be lots of small kings, who ruled their own way.
...when he died, somebody else took over.

In the year 1000 there was Olav who was king. He was the guy who tried to make Norwegians believe in Jesus.
He became unpopular, 'cos he killed norwegians who rebellioned again this new religion. Therefor he was killed in a battle, near Trondheim.

But somehow, after his death, the norwegians started believe in God. Olav the Saint was he called. His hair and beard was growing while he was dead, it says.
So while the church increased it's power, the country was in chaos. The king of Denmark had deep impact, and some local "kings" fighted with eachother.

The King, after Olav, became an enemy of Denmark sailed to England in 1066, to conquer them. He was killed.

Nobody in Norway was powerful enough to conquer new land afterwards, besides there were lots of things to be taken care of back home. The leaders in 1030-1350 were wussies.
People lived a better life here, even though a lot of taxes was paid to the church.

....

In 1349 came a ship to Bergen. With rats. And death. And then 40% of the people died, just like the rest of Europe. The plague.

So, I was a bit wrong, the downfall of the Vikings was in 1030, not of Norway...not untill 1349.

Man, I didn't even use a book for this post...apart from checking something at the very end.

Hey Eric, you did a nice job of explaining history in your own words.
there's probably a lot to read about this on the web, but it sure makes a difference when you talk about it from your own memory, which makes it far more interesting to read.
Rooster and Beelyboy obviously also enjoy it.
big thanx again.

now 1066 kinda rings a bell.
the battle of Stamford Bridge on the 25th September 1066 and shortly later on the 13th October 1066 the battle of Hastings against William the conqueror

I am not sure that the Vikings were aware of the fact that they were Norwegians, Danes or Swedish....or plain Scandinavians. I think these nationalistic terms as we know them today were invented in the 19th century ( as most national histories were built up around Europe ). You can find Viking museums in Denmark as well. But that doesn't make the Vikings any more "Danish". Anyway - here are some English links to the two most famous Danish Vikings-museums :

- here you can sail in some the reconstructed boats

Enjoy : )

So true, nnb... Yet anyhow, they knew where they lived:
that's why Ros/Roslagen as well as Jutland or whatever may
be of significant value as a place marker, right?
And Sweden was unified already ab 900 AD and Norway slightly after that.
