Sting (when he was still kinda cool) is in it.

everything about Quadrophenia - the Film, The Album what ever else
is very underrated.
Pete was the master at capturing adolescent angst. Killer songs
the Real Me, Sea and the Sand, 5:15,Dr. Jimmy, Punk Meet the Godfather
come to mind.

in with another point of view:

1. Quadrophenia was already brilliantly visualized by photographer Ethan Russell in the book that came with the original album.

In my mind, this set a pretty high standard for the film that eventually followed.

2. One of the core concepts of the original LP was that Jimmy's four personalities--his "Quadrophenia" was a reflection of the personalities of each of the four members of the Who: Pete, Keith, John and Roger.

Keith had just died around the time the film was going into production, which made the topic not only difficult to film, but kind of awkward. The Who were trying to carry on.

I saw this film when it came out with my buddy who was a huge Who fan. We were into it, until the party scene where someone pulls out a Who album. It wasn't the original sleeve--but one of those MCA two-fer reissues from 1974!

Horrible glitch.

gia43, I don't agree the music is amazing. On the record quadrophenia, sure - it's my favourite Who album, but the music on the film sucks. The film is more like a film, not a musical rock opera film like Tommy or The Wall.

I dont agree, the versions of the songs on the soundtrack are superior to the original album versions, they have much more bite.

i really like all three:
the original album
the movie
the soundtrack
will get me the dvd soon, great stuff.

together with "who's next" my favourite
record of pete and company.

Yeah I gotta say that the soundtrack doesn't resemble a rock opera but the songs are still great!! "5:15" must be one of my favorite Who songs in general!... And "Love reign o'er me" and "I've had enough" are also great(I don't think anybody has mentioned these)...

Who the f*ck is Mick Jagger?

I know that the film is based on the Quadrophenia album, but aside from the fact that music from the LP are featured in it and they listen to the Who anyway, I don't actually associate it with the band. I just view it as a great movie about pill popping, scooter riding Mods and the film just happens top have a great soundtrack.

Great topic, Big Al. I love The Who and Quadrophenia. I used to have the original album with the book our loogy friend referred to above. I've seen The Who perform almost all of those songs at one time or another. But, alas, I've never seen this movie....I always wanted to, though. Now I shall seek it out.

The first time I watched the movie I was a bit dissapointed,
probably because my expectations was to high. Quadrophenia
the album is one of my favourite rock albums, and I expected
more of the original music to be heard in the film.
The second time I watched the film, I liked it alot.
It's a great film about the mod era, with the war between youth mods and rockers in London during the early 60's.

But for the best musical experience please listen to the record.

I saw The Who back in 1997 on their Quadrophenia tour, when they performed Quadrophenia in its entirety. Awesome show! It's available on DVD now, too.

Lucky you! I got first hooked on Quadrophenia when I watched the show for the Princes trust on the television (Hyde PArk 1996). The first show on the same tour, performed Quadrophenia - but only showed The Real Me, The Dirty Jobs, I've Had Enough, 5.15, Drowned and Love Reign O'er Me on the telly. I have the DVD now, if you think about the 3 dvd set.

Yeah, especially considering that the story takes place in 1964 when the Who, or rather, the High Numbers, had only just released their first single! For that matter, how does Jimmy manage to be in possession of a copy of the My Generation single a full year before it was recorded?

According to [www.imdb.com] it takes place in 1965...

The riot depicted in the film took place in Oct. 1964. It was a real, historical event, not a fiction. The only "Who" record they could have possibly owned then is "Zoot Suit" b/w "I'm The Face".

It is also not possible that Jimmy could have seen the Who on television in 1964, as he somehow manages to do in the film.

As a huge fan of Quadrophenia, I have always taken the film to be sort of a surreal thing. It doesnt take place in any specific year, but rather a time. Its meant (IMO) to represent the Mod era in general, rather than 1964 or 1965. In this context, the movie isnt time specific as I stated, but rather, era specific and so it can incorporate "My Generation", the Who on TV, and there last two mod albums: A quick one (great title track full of clever innuendo's) and the Who sell out (one of the first true concept albums in rock, e.g the concept of listening to a radio program, which is brought to its fullest on the CD reissue).
As for the film, its great. I always liked it, and a friend and I use to get drunk watching it (along with the kids are alright). BTW, i had always wondered if the person swimming off brighton was Keith moon, since this movie was filmed right before his death, and that couldve been included as a memorial to him.

Nice name Happy Jack...good post, too. Of course the references to The Who songs were added in the movie and not a part of the original album, so I would interpret it to also be a little self promotion by the band, you know, to get their name and images out there in front of the audience.

Kevin Wicks! The father of "Deano" and a dead son called "Jimbo"

Yeah, bloody awful!

For those who are moaning about the historical inaccuracies, does it mater? It's just a great bit of entertainment with a few great songs thrown in. Nothing more.
