Ventilator blues Versus Soul survivor
Posted by: NICOS ()

I remember the first time I heard Exile On Main street when it was released, skipped most of the time Ventilator blues and Soul survivor.
Ventilator Blues did grow on me and find it one of the best songs, but Soul Survivor ! altough I belongs to Exile I still can't find the kick out of it, it sounds messy.

Soul Survivor never quite clicked for me either. VB is an MT masterpiece, on the other hand.....

Sorry to hear that Nico. I find Soul Survivor to be brilliant.
But there's probably a reason why they haven't done it live. Perhaps Stones didn't dig it either?
Me like it.

I especially like the guitar-chords in "it's gonna be the death of me"...that's it's not the same chords all the way through the song....it's different later on, it really lifts the melody.

Anybody hear Barry Goldberg's all-Stones covers album from a few years back? - VB's on it with MT reprising his contributions. Sweet.

Ventilator Blues.
Soul Survivor is cool but I was subconsciously put off it because, as an inner cut on the old LP, it always mistracked horribly on my crappy turntable ;^) Exile has never lent itself to poor playback equipment...but with a good system you can still hear something new in every listen through that murky mix.

Erik that's the only part that's lifted the song and maybe the outro with the piano a bit.

I think that Soul Survivor is the one song on that record that they could have done more with. The guitar riffs sound great, but the song doesn't quite fulfil its promise in my view.

When I first got Exile, I wasn't digging Soul Survivor too much. But over time, it REALLY grew on me. It's one of my favorites on Exile now.

And Ventilator Blues is... great, but not my favorite.

VB is immortal because of the staggered hiccup guitar stops. when the chorus hits, the horns come in and you go to heaven.

What!!?? I have always loved Soul Survivor, I think that it ends Exile perfectly. And until I bought an Exile Piano book, I had no idea what Mick was saying. Turd, followed by Ventilator Blues is just a hot, hot combination. Man, I love that album. In fact, I think I'll go listen to it now.

The good dr, is right - Soul Survivor is the perfect way to end Exile, just as Moonlight Mile is in its own way a perfect way to end Sticky Fingers. Exile seems like an incredible adventure. It has its peaks and valleys, and Soul Survivor seems to be the mast on the Jolly Roger being raised again as they set out to sea. If Exile was a second coming, rebirth, or ressurection, Soul Survivor screams: "we're here, and we're coming for you."

Soul Survivor seems like the perfect "I'm coming out guns blazing" song. I listen to it when I need to be pumped up for something.

I find SS the perfect ending for the perfect rock'n roll album. I LOVE that it is not one of the huge warhorses that is the album's closer, but more this murky riff driven tune with a slide riding on top. The greatest part about the song is the ending. When the piano hits in that breakdown and they do that one last, that one more rave-up to end the most glorious rockin album ever. Jagger yelping in the background, the horns blowing.
The riff itself is one of those cool Keithian themes. Rarely are those change used in a rocktune. The D-note is ringing sympathetic through it all. D-Bb-G has the D drone going. Feels so good when it drops to the big C chord.

"...no longer shall you trudge 'cross my peaceful mind."

Ventilator Blues is up with the best Exile has to offer which is nearly every song. Soul Survivor is a fitting end and a great track but like All Down The Line it feels great but doesn't really do a lot for me. I wouldn't want to be without it though.

Ventilator Blues depicts everything that is great about Exile.

It's so very lonely, you're 2,000 Light Years from home

Ventilator is more Exile for me but I love Soul S. A little bit too simple and you can tell they didnt work on it. More Keith showing us how to riff like Keith.

You could say the same thing about any riff he's ever done but, apparently if you read this board, every song they have ever recorded is lacking one thing or another.Perhaps they are in the wrong line of work.

apples & oranges kinda
love 'em both; everything on exiles...works as individual tunes and an entire 'double' album listening experience for me...
man, exiles on main street... holy moly...

that riff right before and into the cho. line... soul survivor...
over and over... that stays with me heavy all these years...
and also that 'gonna be the death of me...' that proceeds it...
kind of a an overlooked classic to me...
u know that riff, those beats...? that rhythm riff...
whappa whappa whappa whappa ....(scream) soul surivvviiivooorrrr.
whappa whappa whappa whappa....(screaming) souulll surviivooorrrrrr...
puncha whappa whappa puncha puncha whappa.... soulll surviiivvooorrrrr....

gonna be the death of me............
whoa them rubber-legged boys is crazy...

No I dont think so, I think this is a song where he shows his new type of riffing. It wasnt new but not very old. His personal style, the typical riff.

When the waters is rough The sailing is tough...
Great introduction from Keith riff and Mick

I love SOUL SURVIVOR!

It was not so appreciated at the beggining for me, but after some times listening I loved more and more each time.

Hope some day we can hear it live!

I disagree.Any riff that he does is "like Keith" because he is Keith. It is consistent with a style that he developed but,the riff of Soul Survivor is not the same as any previous riff. What is an example of a song it was used in before '72?Maybe you're talking about some rare early outtake that I have never heard because,I have listened to all Stones albums & there are only two other songs that have a similar riff & they were both recorded well after Soul Survivor.
If you don't like the song, that's fine but, people say that it is missing something & then can't come up with any suggestions as to what it is missing then, say that the riff wasn't new but, don't say where it was previously used....not a very convincing argument.
