Geez... are you ready for this.... dig Flea's relentless bass and John's SCORCHING, SCREAMING guitar on 21st Century...

You MUST listen to this song thru to the end...., because these 2 musicians just take off into the stratosphere about 3:15 into it and don't stop til the finish at 4:10....

hard to see past them as band of the decade so far, to be honest

Gazza you make an interesting point....they have certainly been consistent in their output...and with much less fanfar and brouhaha than some other big bands.........Fruscante's maturing (and sobering up) along with Fleas's undeniably great bass playing is impressive.....

For those of you fairly new to the RHCP, their "early years" are full of brilliant music that never got "mainstream" play... however most of their early albums have 2 or 3 classic songs each and the rest sort of "period experimentalism" that doesn't wear very well...

If you're looking to assemble your own personal "Red Hot Chili Peppers Greatest Songs" (not necessarily greatest Hits)... then look no farther than the following incredible songbook:

THE EARLY YEARS:

The Red Hot Chili Peppers CD (1984):
True Men Don't Kill Coyotes
Grand Pappy du Plenty

Freaky Styley CD (1985):
Jungleman
Freaky Styley

Uplift Mofo Party Plan CD (1987):
Me and My Friends
Backwoods
Organic Anti-Beat Box Band

Mothers Milk CD (1989):
Higher Ground
Knock Me Down
Taste the Pain
Pretty Little Ditty
Johnny, Kick a Hole in the Sky

THE MIDDLE YEARS

Blood Sugar Sex Magik CD (1991):
The Power of Equality
Breaking the Girl
I Could Have Lied
Give it Away
Under the Bridge
Naked in the Rain
Soul to Squeeze (released as single in 1993)

One Hot Minute CD (1995):
Deep Kick
Coffee Shop
Walkabout
Shallow Be Thy Game

Californication CD (1999):
Around the WOrld
Parallel Universe
Scar Tissue
Otherside
Californication
Easily
This Velvet Glove
Savior
Road Trippin

THE LATER YEARS

By the Way CD (2002)
By the Way
This is the Place
Dosed
Don't Forget Me
The Zephyr Song
Can't Stop
Midnight
Throw Away Your Television
Tear
On Mercury
Minor Thing
Warm Tape
Venice Queen

Now we have 28 NEW SONGS on top of this incredible songbook... no other veteran band comes close to this level of creativity.

Not to mention their live concerts are some of the best you'll ever attend.

I have had the album for days now and listened to it several times but did n;t want to post about it, until it hd sunk in a little since it is so big.
I gotta say the peppers have by now become one of the premier bands in existence. This is an excellent album. I have no problme with the length. I don't see it as padded with filler. Why would the Pepprs need to fill anything anyway? If they hadn't wanted to they could have released a single album..
Right now though I see the Mars album as much stronger.

One gripe I have with the Chili Peppers is that they don't play enough of their great early songs in concert!!

On the By The Way tour I don't think they played any songs written "pre-1991" except for Me and My Friends which is a screamer, but hardly their best of the period...

How about Organic Anti-Beat Box Band ??? Is that one of the greatest grooves ever made ?? and they never play it live anymore...

Or Backwoods... what an incredible song...

Jungleman... never play it.

And Higher Ground... they were meant to cover this song, their version just rocks the rafters and it's never played.

Not to mention Taste the Pain, with Flea on trumpet... that was the song that really got my attention. After I heard this song I knew there was something very unique about this band and I had to listen to their entire discography... but it's never played live on recent tours... though Flea did do a few trumpet improvisations on the last tour, they never played Taste the Pain...

Or Johnny Kick a Hole in the Sky... how many of you love that song ??? Never played live anymore...

Of course the reason is that they have such an extensive songbook that they can't play everything...

Guess I'm just an RHCP "setlist whiner", lol
