Chili Peppers new release

"But like the Rolling Stones -- another rhythm-conscious act who started by ripping off black music only to dig much deeper -- the Red Hot Chili Peppers are a real band, where everybody counts and no one is replaceable (save for, perhaps, Bill Wyman)."

This is from a review in Rolling Stone of the new Chili Peppers CDs. I dig the fact that almost ALL other rock / pop bands are compared to our heroes. I listened to samples of every track last night and it sounds great. As far as the samples, I didn't here a bad one at all. It all sounded fresh and live (most credit goes to John Frusciante for these wonderful sounds imo). Very very Hendrix-ian (is that a word) and funky and soulful. I didn't think that they could pull of a release of epic proportions (28 songs) and have everything sound so diverse yet cohesive at the same time. My fav band (the Stones) as much as I love them, were not able to pull this off with ABB. I wish ABB would grow on me, but only a few songs have. I think this RHCP release is going to be the best CD so far this year and probably their greatest achievement.

I posted on this earlier, at the link below. The link also contains another link where, hoefully, you can still go and listen to all the tracks... not sure how long they will keep them up.

My first and second impressions:

1) Definitely agree that John is on fire on this. You can sure hear the Hendrix influence on alot of the tracks...

2) The whole CD has "grown" on me as I've listened to it. Still I consider it a bit uneven, to say the least, given the 28 songs.

3) There are about a dozen songs that just jumped at me on first listen... C'Mon Girl is particularly interesting.

4) Overall I don't think this will quite rise to the level of By the Way and certainly not Californication, probably their 2 best albums. But there will be prolly 6 to 8 tracks that I'll copy to my "best of the chili peppers" cd collection (which is now 3 cd's)

5) This is a LIVE BAND... and even if some of the songs don't grab you that much on audio, they may be quite fantastic live...

and most importantly... don't miss this band on tour, they are AMAZING!

listened to the whole album earlier on the vh1 link and it is great. instant classic. frusciante at his best. drenched with great guitar work. freshest music since Black Keys "Rubber Factory" and Kings Of Leon "Youth and Young Manhood"

well saw the show; don't mean to upset anyone's sensibilities, honestly don't.

they sucked. boring posuers...off key semi rap and graceless galavanting around the stage in some hackneyed timewarp...
i suppose flea and the drummer were pretty good; just can't believe that anthony is a rock star...but then again, so is ashlee simpson.

forgive me...

it was intense. frusciante channels hendrix like no one else. there will never be another hendrix, but frusciante is pretty much the closest musician we have in this time to hendrix. since he re joined in 98 he totally took over the sound and feel of this band and it has paid off in so many ways for them. he is a genius. just listen to his solo stuff. by the way, his fav stones line up was when they had brian. he says that was when they were still fresh and real. i sort of agree with that.

Yeah, Readymade is one of the best straight-ahead rockers by any band in awhile. It reminds me alot of a couple of RHCP's earlier rockers:
Coffee Shop
and
Johnny Kick a Hole in the Sky...

Interesting that they rarely play these 2 songs in concert anymore. At least I don't think they ever played them on the Californication tour and 100% sure they didn't on By The Way...

i like it but think the lyrics are very very bad and childisch

Frusciante's lyrics are anything but childish.

The Stones have written some VERY bad and childish lyrics, but that doesn't prevent me from enjoying the damn good music.

i guess that's fair.

still wanted to get the word out 'bout the performance to those who like 'em...
i tried to keep an open mind; i wanted to enjoy it...i think the rhythm section is awesome...but...
lol i guess i'm jest not a fan... ya got me done figgered.

the lyrics on californication were incredible sharp (one shot all i need, i got rhytem when i bleed.), but i don't like them on this album, they are just to sappy (don't know how you say it in english but i mean zoetsappig) (sweetjuicy ?)

Re: Chili Peppers new release

From my earlier posts on the topic, I'm still sort of sticking with the following tunes as being the best off this new album:

Hump De Bump
She's Only 18
Slow Cheetah
Torture Me (dig Flea's trumpet highlights here)
C'Mon Girl (one of my top faves of the whole CD)
Hey (nice jazz guitar groove here)
Desecration Smile
Readymade (great relentless rocker)
If (has that "Candle in the Wind" quality to it)
So Much I
Storm in a Teacup (I had some extra stars by this, so another very top fave)
We Believe
Death of a Martian...

Okay, if you want, throw in Dani California and Stadium Arcadium...

At 28 songs by definition it's at least somewhat "uneven"... and the songs above I doubt will match up over time side-by-side with my faves from By The Way, and certainly not Californication which is a tour-de-force incredible album... but they make a great contribution to the bands overall songlist, and since the RHCP is essentially a live band, they probably have incredible live arrangements of these songs, always a safe bet with them.

FWIW, anyone criticizing the SNL performance has to remember that they were playing on a stage smaller than most high school battle-of-the-band stages. This is a big-sound band that can easily fill any arena, ampitheather, pavilion, you want to name. And half the experience is the riotous fan base in the audience. If you haven't been to an RHCP gig, and you can only pick one new band to see this Summer, pick them, you're not likely to be disappointed.

Just saw the "official" video for Dani California... it's a parody of so many bands of the past...

It's worth watching just to see how many of the bands u can identify...

From recollection: Kiss, David Bowie, Sly & the Family Stone, Led Zeppelin, The Sex Pistols, an hilarious Motley Crue, Nirvana...

I try to watch as few videos as possible, but this one is truly humorous.

Flea on bass on Wet Sand... a beautiful piece of understated basswork just completely controlling the direction of the song...

Thanks alot for pointing this song out, somehow it just completely slipped under my radar when I first listened to this CD... like most of By The Way CD did at first, also.

How about John's guitar on Hey ??? This is just PURE jazz guitar... you could be listening to Grant Green or Wes Montgomery here.... this is just IN-F*CKIN CREDIBLE Music !!
