The Holy Grail of Bootleg/Unreleased/Live

This will probably be a short post, but what the heck:

If there is one recording which is mythic, or elusive, or the most sought-after, yet rarely gotten - what is it?

It can be a personal thing, or in general

Stones-Wise?
The rumored 30 minute version of Just Wanna See His Face
Also, I suppose English Summer (along with the Brian Jones solo songs, which may or may not exist) is one most Stones collectors would seek.

For non-Stones, I've always coveted all of the unreleased Sly Stone work from the Riot/Fresh era - reels and reels of stuff Sly used to drive around with in the back of his car. I've wanted that stuff for years, but I don't think Sly's gonna invite me over any time soon to hear it. Also, the stuff Sly did with Miles is very intriguing to me - can't even imagine what that sounds like.

The other one for me (just because my brother and I used to look all over for it when we were teenagers) is a live Replacements album called "The Shit Hits The Fans". Brilliant title. I'm sure it will be on the forthcoming box set of unreleased 'Mats, though. So maybe my search for that will end soon.

Dont know if its a holy grail, but...
Charlie Is My Darling the for 40 years never released movie is a
fine piece of document of the Stones in mid-60s heydays.

There are plenty of items on the Holy Grail list, but, one would absolutely have to be --

-- The rumoured Pro-Shot of the famous Brussels concert from 1973!! I've definitely read about it's possible existence, and my oh my,would it be sweet IF something like that ever materialised.

The entire El Mocambo shows of course.
The show in Club 100 for Ian Stewart.
Both have never been heard of.
There are some obscure shows: Auburn 69, Denver 72.
I would like to hear some of the shows in USA tour when Brian was not present.

Outtake wise there are some mythical titles that we're not even sure that they exist. "Scarlet" e.g.
Or the Steel Wheels " sessions. The B2B sessions.

Yeah....

I'm Gonna Burn Your Playhouse Down - with George Jones...cut at the same session as Say It's Not You.
And if it's anything like Georges original country-boogie rocker it would be a killer.

Crawling Kingsnake - John Lee Hooker.....Keith said they did two takes.

All the unreleased Tom Waits/Keith tunes such as Good Dogwood..somebody must be sittin' on 'em...TOM!!!

Tom Waits and Keith together and all they come up with is "That Feel" ??? From Tom's account it sounds like they spent some real time together; not just one star visiting the other for the obligatory cameo. But "Feel" doesn't cut it IMO. The whole wobbly out of tune croaking in this case is just that.

The Stone's cover of Otis Redding's "I've Been Loving You Too Long." Is there any other version than the one on Got Live If You Want It?

That was a cassette-only release on Twin Tone. Some guy in the crowd at a club gig was taping a show with a little hand-held recorder, and when it was over one of the Replacements (or one of their people) jumped into the audience and took the tape from the guy.

And then they put it out themselves.

I remember it had some 70's covers like "Taking Care of Business" and "Hitchin' a Ride" on it.

At their live shows, Bob Stinson was the glue that held them together. The first time (and only) time I saw them with Slim I left before the show ended.

Without Bob, they sucked.

The Beatles lost album "HOT AS SUN" that was suppose to come out between the White Album and Abbey Road......

I would love to obtain a soundboard stereo recording of the July 4, 1972 RFK Stadium Rolling Stones concert. All that exists is an audience tape (to the best of my knowledge).

That was my first Stones show. Almost 34 years ago...

That's the holy grail for me.

That's it. Of course, the studio version that is on GLIYWI is available in the non-live-overdub version on the SACD reissue series.

Surely the Rock And Roll Circus is out?

The NME concert was filed so should still be out there waiting...

I'd like to hear their version of Dancing In The Street which led to Satisfaction.

The Stones did a version of I've Been Loving You Too Long during the rehearsals for Saturday Night Live in '78. It's available on bootleg. Sound quality not so good unfortunately.

Nothing's rare these days.. if someone gets their hands on it, it's all over the net in no time. But my all time favorite would be Under My Thumb on the Phoenix 1981 boot.

I only knew that the complete(!) London, Empire Wembley Pool concert was filmed professionally by the BBC. If it still exists it would surely be my all-time favorite. And if the Brussels Pro-Shot actually exists it's the same...

My Holy Grail would be April 20, 1998 at the Bell Centre, Montreal because Mick danced over to me and lifted his shirt up after I waved my Union Jack flag for him to see. Its obviously the DVD I NEED! If anyone has a copy, you will be REWARDED!

what is ironic is when someone has a recording that nobody has, what do they do with it? Do they play it to themseleves for years and years saying to themseleves that they have the one and only?? Whoo Hoo...to themseleves.

Someone might go to the grave saying to themseleves they have MSG 1969 soundboard....but does anyone else really care?

Are they worried about bootleggers making money out of it ?
These days you can feed an unreleased bootleg to almost anyone and everyone....the bootlegger get the scraps. In the good ol' days the bootlegger would make money out of your precious recording....not anymore.

If I was you, I'd sell it to the bootleggers and make money out of it....after putting it up on DIME smiling smiley) We all win !

I saw it in an art house theater a few years ago. Interesting and amusing but also kind of boring.

I've got this one too, there are some really good scenes, but it's far from being a brilliant movie.

Excellent point. For instance, that high quality version of Gangster's Maul with Jeff Beck from the Mick Solo studio sessions that turned up on Dime a while back. Who saw that coming? The Stones vaults are sagging under the weight of treasure they enclose.
