john Lennon quote " macca is the best piano man in the world"
Posted by: marchegiani1 ()
Date: April 30, 2006 00:22

john lennon once declared that macca was the best piano man in the world.

In my opinion, macca is still the best there is, and he ll be the best there ever will be.

elton has nothing compared to macca, and chuck, can only dream to play the long and winding road like macca.

perhaps macca can replace chuck?

Yeah, I agree with Mr Lennon. Ray Manzarek from the Doors sure is the best piano man in the world. No doubts whatsoever.MEZ

Well, I declare that my guitar is the nicest guitar in the world.
And that my mother is the greatest mother in the world.
You can't "declare" someone close to you.

Macca can join the band, but he would take Daryl's place, not Chuck's.

he can take both cuck's and darryl place.

he is so talented that he could even replace keith in cases like today;s... when keiths is out injured, or he could fill in for charlie , or even mick.

that's how talented this king of the kings is.

Most ridiculous statement ever heard.....

The best piano man - playing ballads on piano is no big deal....

Has Macca ever played one of the difficult classical compositions - fx. Chopins Polonaise??

Just asked....

Once again - it is like comparing bananas with apples.....

It is so sad that many people on this site don't really appreciate the span and quality of Ron Wood's career as a musician and solo musician before and during the Rolling Stones. The man has absolutely nothing to prove. He wrote more than his fair share of good songs with the Faces and solo.
In the Stones I do feel his contributions have been ignored or used and not credited with a few exceptions.
It's a fact that Ron Wood had a great career before the Stones and was respected among his peers.

Mick Taylor on the other hand, plays slide in standard concert tunings at times which is quite hard to do. I guess Taylor is on of the best guitarists ever. Only Eric Clapton would in my mind be able to compete with Mick Taylor. When it comes to slide guitar I think that Ry Cooder is the man. Just listen to Cooder's wonderful work on Sister Morphine. Not even Mick taylor would have been able to top that excellent performance. Ronnie Wood did some work in standard concert tuning in 1976 that was great, e.g on Hey Negrita, Fool To Cry and You Gotta Move. Anyway I think that if Mick Taylor would not have been in the Stones, he would have always played in pubs like he does nowadays. Jagger and Richards provided Taylor with this amazingly good material and without these songs Taylor would be nothing at all. Basically, it's all about Jagger and Richards really.MEZ

This is one of the most ridiculous statements I ever heard.

Being great on an instrument has nothing to do with the level of difficulty.
To me the greatness of Macca on piano is that he finds all these very simple but beautiful things on it. Martha my Dear, Penny Lane, Maybe I'm Amazed and so on.

It's sound very snobby to me: people who think classical music stands above anything else because it sounds more intellectual. Chopin would have never come up with the pianohook like in Lady Madonna.

Don't compare apples and oranges.

I don't think Keith would play a great Villa Lobos. But he's my favorite guitarplayer.

see...///

it s true......chopin, bach, mozart would never be able to come up with piado masterpieces like maybe amazed, let it be, hey jude, lady madonna, hey buldog, your loving flame, no more lonley nights , and many more.

john lennon is no moron, he knows what he s talking about.

if he thought that macca was the best piano man in the world.......it must be true.....

and songs mentioned above are just good proofs.

chuck will never be able to come up with piano masterpieces like macca.......

Hey... but he's not the best though.

He's nowhere near Nicky Hopkins.

The Rolling Stones are supposed to have a secret warehouse in the London docks area with all their music equipment, when not used on tour or in the studio, is stocked there. Chuch McGee was in charge of the warehouse until his untimely death and now Keith's guitar technichian, Pierre de Beauport is the boss and present owner of the building. Keith's 72 Custom Tele,Late 70's Rosewood,Ted Newman 5-string Zemaitis Skulls,LP Custom P90 and LP Custom Humbucker are among the priceless items that are supposed to be stored at this particular place.MEZ

Dinu Lipati is the best piano player in the world. Nicky Hopkins is the best in rock.

"john lennon is no moron, he knows what he s talking about."

Blah, blah, blah - he is not wiser than most of us on this board....

Most of us can play the simple Beatles ballads on piano just as well as Macca.....

But this is just one of these ongoing stories gloryfying Macca.....

Macca is almost as good a pianist as Richard Carpenter (who is classically trained). But I wouldn't want Carpenter in the Stones, and I wouldn't want Macca either. Because the blues involves more than technical skills -- Macca couldn't touch Johnny Johnson, or Huey Piano Smith, or Dr. John, or Allen Toussaint (or Stu or Nicky or Ian Mac for that matter). Whoever posted the initial comment doesn't know squat about piano. Most of Macca's piano classics are very simple - The Long and Winding Road isn't difficult at all. Any beginner can play Let It Be, and Hey Jude is just F and C (w/a little C7 thrown in). I'm not saying that these aren't great tracks - they are, and the beauty is in the simplicity. But anyone who plays piano can play 'em. It's a lot harder to vamp on Let It Rock and make it MOVE.

It's easy to play something like Let It Be or Martha My Dear, but it's hard to come up with something like that. It's the same thing as Macca the bass player - not the greatest skill, but great melodies. Gimme Shelter guitar solo (and most of Stones solos/riffs) is very easy to play, but it's still one of the best solos ever.

And yeah, NICKY RULES SUPREME.

No argument there. Like Bobby Keys is no Charlie Parker, but I love his solo in Casino Boogie (For the most part, TWO NOTES!)

it's amazing because macca never had fromal piano lessons, or guitar, or bass lessons.

and yet, he is the best piano man in the world. chuck was classicaly trained, and yet, he is no way near macca.

derryl was trained as a bassis, he went to school for it, and yet, he is no macca.

macca is just the top musician of all time.

What about arenas. Is Paul bigger than the Stones?

Ian Stewart wins over Paul for boogie woogie. I like Paul McCartney but his catalogue is sooo uneven. After "Band on the run" and the "Live and let die" song, I don't know of much out there that is truly that great by him. Has anyone heard the Jerry Garcia Band do "Let me roll it"? Great stuff!

When and where? Because without any context I'd say it was meant as an insult.

You might have to scrape me off the floor at the end of the tour, but it'll be really good scrapings. - Mick Jagger

Macca is a pussycat. If Mick ever asked Chuch to play the pussycat song "the long and winding road" on stage then I am sure Mick would have been very ill and I would no longer be a Stones fan. It is a nice little pussycat song and I can use it as elevator music, but it is not rock'n roll, so the Stones don't need a pussycat piano player of course.
