Emotional Rescue (the Album)

... uh, not real sure why my previous post got deleted -
but ~*COURAGE!*~ it's the Rolling Stones!
it starts with a real nice funky dance track. Rooster, are you there? :E

ER probably cannot be considered one of their best, but it surely one of my personal favorites. It's the beginning of the end of the "golden era" for me....seemed like they had the Midas Touch in those days...they even had a way of making mediocre songs sound great (Send it to Me, Summer Romance).

Faves include:

Where the Boys Go
ER
DITH
She's So Cold
All About You
Let Me Go

i am getting better at digging this album, but i've still got a ways to go.
this way-slow Let Me Go, for example - i *want* to like it, but ... ow!
let me turn it up louder and see if that helps. :E

Charlie's under-stated drumming is what propels LMG....

ER to me is one fo those albums that not only is not very good song byu song but also when taken as just the album itself. An album alwasy has it's own identity, regardless of the songs. Maybe has to do with the cover art, the time and reason of release. Somehow ER is not too blessed in those dept.
The production of the album is not good. Doesn't cut loose. Never ragged.
It's a Stones album though; thru and thru. Love it.

Know what you mean, Chelsea. It sounds like a collection of songs that's released at the same time, not so much as an album. But there are some cool songs on it though...

wah, but people! i want help *loving* it here -
i've already got 26 years of practice at kinda shrugging over most of it.

thanks for the drumming on LMG, T&A - i've turned it up way loud and that helps too. :E
(still way friggin slow, though!)

Well, try the same with where the boys all go: play it really loud, preferably on a set of headphones. Play Summer Romance immediately afterwards. That should help you!

Not too slow at all - that's part of the beauty of this one. If you wanna hear it fast, check out any live '81 version.

just in time for Down in the Hole. slow dance?

i know, T&A - it's the fast 81 versions that sold me on the number to begin with.
so if you can get me to hear this slow rendition with your ears, that will be a real gift.
like i said: i *want* to dig it! that's what it's for.

Lady Sssoul if you need another moment of glory on ER, there is one that I have talked about on this board here before; can not recall who with though.
On WTBG Charlie does these triplet rolls. Start at 2:10 in the song. Then he does this ONE hit of magic at 2:14 to throw himself back into the beat. I love that hit!

I'm givin' to you straight from the shoulder, sssoul. The genius of the song is the fact that it rocks/swings slower than most rockers. She's So Cold is similar on the album. These days, they wouldn't have the restraint to do this. And, KR's beautifully melodic solo is transcendant. This is what he means by "it's what you DON'T play as much what you do."

yeah Chelsea, i remember you pointing that out last time i asked for ER-Digging Lessons -
i was just dancin to Charlie on that one, thanks to you - that's a genuine gift, thank you.

Chelsea - what song are you talkin' here - WTBG?

oh - never mind - I see the WTBG reference now - and I KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT - one of Charlie's best-ever moments. He also has a cymbal crash on LMG toward the end that floors me everytime. Know which one?

thank you T&A, i'll put it on for a fourth time then, soon as we get through She's So Cold - which i think is a brilliant tempo here, by the way -
and this next beautiful moody slither of smoke ... so sick and tired - ohh man ...

I agree with T&A. Not their best but always liked this one alot.
To me this album flows and fit in well with the Summer of 1980 (at least for me)
Being sandwiched between Some Girls and Tatoo You, ER will always be thought of as weak. It does not compare with those two greats, but I think it is underrated. It fits right in with the likes of their last 4. Good but not great. Better than Undercover and DW.
My favs are Down In the Hole, Send it To Me, Where the Boys Go, Let Me Go, She's So Cold, All About You, ER. Actually I like all of them, even Indian Girl.
My main criticism is that Dance, while a fun song, is one of the weakest openers. The Stones great albums have kick ass openers. This is in class of Hot Stuff from B&B, Flip the Switch from B2B, Dancing with Mr. D from GHS. All decent songs but I think having a strong opener (regardless of what they make the singles) is key to their albums becoming popular. If ER had SMU as the opener (which it very well could have) I think ER would be viewed totally differently

Yes T&A I know exactly the crash on LMG you talk about LOL.
I love LMG too. When I think of the 81 tour Woody's shades pop in my head; the roubd ones he would let slide around his neck. Then Charlie's bald spot LOL, Jagger's ridiculous out fits that got a LOT worse in Europe. Places like Napoli...Bill's playing was such a highlight that tour. Wasn;t that the tour when he played the Steinberger? The worst looking Bass ever invented but leave it to Bill to make the uncool cool. In his canary yellow suit and his little violet punk tie.
THEN I get to Keith and his green boots and watching his left hand on "Let me Go". The times I saw them live in 81, in the movie. His left hand NEVER stayed still during that song. In my mind when they talk of Keith's guitar magic that is one song I think about. The 2-stringing. That song really rolls. And the bridge is great in LMG: "I find hard to be cruel..." It sounds like it goes into weird timing (like Lennon would do in "She Said She Said" e.g) but it really doesn't.

"...no longer shall you trudge 'cross my peaceful mind."

I just love everything about the Some Girls- Emotional Rescue- Tattoo You era of the Stones! So much better than the previous threesome of album snoozers.

Back when everyone was starting to gravitate dangerously close to the Motley Crue-style LA hair-metal cesspool, the Stones still had a great sound.

Down in the Hole is an awesome song.

smile: yeah it is! but i forgive Part 1 - it keeps its tail up. :E

>> You started with LMG is that the problem child of ER for you? <<

actually i started with Dance but my original thread got mistaken for something unruly, i guess, and it was deleted.
the slow LMG isn't really *the* Problem Child for me, but the real Problem Child is just gonna have to stay that way for a while.
i can only take so much, you know? :E
and other than that there's not too much that gives me *very* much trouble anymore -
and that fourth round of Let Me Go sounded pretty freakin fine, so thanks all for the lessons.
