My Band mp3 - Route 66
Date: April 23, 2006 23:30

My band recorded 12 songs the other day, and whilst the sounds not great, I thought i'd like to get your opinions.

Please remember we are all 16, and the drummer sings this one and readily admits he is no Jagger.

Could you please comment on it see what you guys think. I'm ready for the 'you haven't got the groove...' comments, and particularly tell me what you think about the music.

Thanks.

It's a great drummer. The guitarist NEEDS to work his tone. It sounds bloody awful..

agree with reptile about the drummer and the guitar sound - the guitar work is fine - but the sound needs improvement.
The singer sounds somewhat uninspired - a bit too loose - like in a rehearsal.
Still quite cool smiling smiley

It was strange because we were using pretty basic equipment and recorded through the PA, so could not hear ourselves sing, hence the uninspired singing.

I play lead and I agree completely about the sound. I also play harmonica. Can you listen to these two, and tell me about the guitar sound on Beethoven thanks.

Sounds good to me, even the singer only it looks he saying the words instead of telling you the story of route 66 (I hope he is knowing where the story is about ?)

Yeh he does as soon as he heard the song he asked.

I agree now. The singer is really awful. Rest of the band pretty good.

True, he's not the normal singer, the main singer sings the Beatles and Kinks, but I posted the Stones ones.

The singing does not really sound ininspired but the singer makes the mistake of many singers nowadays because he's slurring which means that he stretches the last syllables. You hear lots of such singing on TV and radio all the time. And that sounds lazy. He should practise by singing along with the Rolling Stones recordings from the first album and the live take from DECEMBERS CHILDREN album. Jagger sings it really sharp because he 'belts' the lyrics a bit (but please not too much!).
But if it is right that you are only 16 the song sounds pretty promising with good guitars and great drums. You could rave up a crowd with it.

P.S. But do young people nowadays want to hear those old songs? (Rather a joke).

Thanks for the comments. It surprises me because the young people actually like it because they can dance, and pubs and clubs for younger people seem to be booking us more and more.

Hey Singer..
Are you in the US are you guys going to play anytime soon? What kind of amp, guitar are you using?

Go Dawgs!

Re: My Band mp3 - Route 66

Thanks again.

@#$%&, I use a 50 Watt Peavey Classic Amp. Used to use a Vox AD30 but it was not powerful enough for live gigs. For guitar I got a Vox Teardrop, but on that Route 66 mp3 its a Gretsch ProJet because a string broke.

Hey there Singer,

I gotta say, coming from another garage band, you guys sure know your licks and have got a much more organized sound than ours.

Two questions:

1. How do I set up something on YouSendIt for everyone to hear?

2. What is your recording set up? What do you use to record? I guess if you could just describe the environment and the setup that you use for recording.

It sounds great, though, IMO

Cheers Jumpin.

1) Right, I only just learnt how to use YouSendIt, but you go to [www.yousendit.com]

then under recipient email address, put your own and select the sound file and send it to yourself. When you open the e-mail, you get given a link to the page for the download. Open the link and copy and paste the full link onto your message to post on here. Hope that solves the first one.

2) For the recording we hired a guy for £80 (unsure, around $120? ready for corrections there) split 4 ways, so he basically set it up. The environment was in our practice room in a double glazing warehouse in a room a bit like your average front room. He supplied mikes for miking all the drums and amps which were all put through our PA and into his multi-track recording system where he mixed the sounds . That's why we couldn't hear ou singing on the recording. Not too sure exactly what he did, but hope it helps.

Smashing, Singer

Thanks for the tips. Yeah, I'm afraid our recording system is simply two mikes plugged into a laptop and someone presses record. Conditions have to be just right for it to sound good.

what else have you guys done?

Lol, gotta start somewhere! Well we recorded 9 other songs at the time, and we've been getting quite a few gigs and upcoming bookings in our town, a lot of the time supporting experienced bands seeing as it might be a risk for someone to book a band of 16 year olds. How about you?

Well our band was started when we were about 16 too

We recorded an EP,called Leaving Chicago (we all left chicago for college when we recorded it)

The tracks included:

The Midnight Special
Jumpin' Jack Flash
(I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone
I Fought The Law
Johnny B. Goode
and a demo version of David Bowie's Queen Bitch

We performed at a high school benefit and a retirement home benefit (corny, I know)

But the other stuff we do is:
I Can't Explain - The Who
Pinball Wizard - The Who
Blitzkreig Bop - The Ramones
A Quick One While He's Away - The Who
I Saw Her Standing There - The Beatles
Thunderstruck - AC/DC
TNT - AC/DC
Brown Sugar (only over winter break)
Honky Tonk Women (just as a rehearsal piece)
Not Fade Away - We some how ease into this one occasionally

Great songs there. We also do 'I Saw Her Standing...', 'I Can't Explain' and 'Johnny B Goode' (you have to, don't ya). Is your band still going strong?

Well because we go to school all over the country, the only time we have to play is during holidays. I'm actually arguing with one of my mates right now about who has creative control, ha ha.

We're planning on getting back together this summer to re-record our EP

We just kind of lack patience and a direction
