Favorite solo output by Stones sideman/supporting player?

I say "Return Of The Living Dead" soundtrack by Matt Clifford. Not a bad movie either from the Golden Age Of Hollywood, but the music itself easily stands on its own.

Sail On Sailor by the Beach Boys, with Blondie Chaplin on vocals.

Apparently he hates it, however.

Apparently, some label should release Blondie Chaplin's album Fragile Thread, that he recorded in 2000, with some Stones participation even, so I can finally hear it.

Of the actually released recordings by their sidemen, Ry Cooder's oeuvre is probably among the biggest ones, whilst I also like Steve Jordan's drumming and production on other people's records, like what he did on Booker T & the MG's That's the Way It Should Be album, or on the Fabulous Thunderbirds' High Water. I guess Steve could be a good replacement for Don Was as Stones producer.
The Waddy Wachtel-produced Warren Zevon album Mr. Bad Example is also highly recommended. Apart from that, if you don't mind disco sound but like weird lyrics, I'd recommend the body of work of Was (Not Was). Keith should really do a guest vocal with them one day... ;-)

Bump in the Night by Ian McLagan

Leaving this Town by Blondie, off the Beach Boys' Holland album.

I actually sang the main line to him and he was chuffed to bits at the fact that someone had actually remembered him for having written (and sang) what is a truly great song.

Blondie and Ricky Fatarr were early 70's Beach Boys, ("Carl and the Passions--So Tough" "Holland" and a live album ) and before that were in a Carl Wilson-produced South African band called Flame.

Ricky was in later in the Rutles, and was also an original Bump Band member. He's the drummer on McLagan's Bump in the Night!

Besides the obvious (Blondie, Ian McLagan), I'll add Ivan Neville's 1995 "Thanks" (w/ both Keith & Ron guesting), and the new Bernard Fowler which is an extremely well produced album (on gold disc yet), with strong original material & covers of the Isley's "Pop That Thang", & N. Young's "Cinnamon Girl," and Ron adding very nice guitar to 2 tracks. Soulful Funk/rock, also features Waddy Wachtal, Ivan Neville, Darryl Jones, Lisa Fisher, etc - recommended. And of course the Tim Ries Stones Project.

I wouldn't know at all, but I hear Chuck's Southscape is pretty good.

I really like Nicky Hopkins first solo album Tin Man Was A Dreamer. Some nice contributuions from Mick Taylor on it as well as George Harrison.

If we're able to consider Blondie's time with the Beach Boys then I would personally - being the nut that I am - Chuck's tenure with the Allman Brothers Band, more specifically the album Brothers and Sisters. Chuck owned Jessica and his work in Ramblin' Man, Come and Go Blues and Southbound is also fantastic.

Ouch!

Listen, mister, the only one who calls me "Obvious" is my 16-year old son...

And he respectfully adds the title "Captain!" smiling smiley

To answer the question about Flame, I can't really tell you if it was good or bad. I found a battered-up copy of the album years ago and played it once. Filed it away. It didn't impress me on the first listen, but who knows, on second listen it may be great. I'll dig it up some day and report on it.

Another huge credit for Blondie was the third David Johansen album, "Here Comes The Night." It's really a collaboration between the two, as he co-writes most of the songs with David, and is pictured jamming with him on the inner sleeve

I didn't mean to come off patronizing, loog droog, but I can see as how it might read that way: I simply was suggesting a lot of folks had mentioned Blondie in this thread already, I'm with you and agree he's contributed fine work in a lot of contexts (I first heard him thru the Beach Boys), including the last Hubert Sumlin (About Them Shoes, w/ Keith Richards, & Johansen himself also guesting); and I've raved quite a bit about the Faces, and also tried to share my excitement when the McLagan cds were reissued, in these pages, and as others had happily mentioned them as well...decided to share my entusiasm for something that will likely fall under the radar

No problem, Mr. r.

Plenty of room for ravers on this board.

Has anyone heard Ry Cooder's stuff with Gabby Pahinui, a Hawaii slack-key guitarist from the early 70's? I was working part time in a record store in the Kahala Mall in Hawaii in 1977 and Mick Fleetwood buys a bunch of those records. A year or so later, Stevie Nicks walks up to my counter, and I tell her about it and she really warms up to me, says "yeah, I remember him playing all of that weird Hawaiian music", and actually offers to sign an album for me. Cool. Ironically, I actually never listened to any of it.

Better late than never: Since this album seems impossible to find, could somebody be so kind to post the tracks featuring our beloved guitarhero? This sounds like a really interesting sideproject.
