Why do The Stones neglect Beggar's banquet?
Posted by: stones_serb ()

We all know that Beggar's banquet is one of the most popular and critically acclaimed albums of The Rolling Stones. It really bothers me to see that the Stones hardly ever play songs from it(except for Sympathy for the devil). They even stopped playing Street fighting man.

Songs from Let it bleed and Sticky Fingers get played much more often. After all they played all of songs from those two albums in live setting.

Jig saw puzzle is one of their best songs and they have never played it live.

BTW I think that setlists of this tour are great and I can't wait to see The Stones this summer(it will be my first time).Playing a song or two from Beggar's would make it all even greater.

Beggars Banquet has never been a favourite of mine, but as far as this tour goes, I do agree with you. Beggars got a fair airing on the Licks tour though. Street Fighting Man and Sympathy For The Devil were regulars in the set, Stray Cat Blues was dug out for the theatre shows and they even performed Salt Of The Earth towards the end of the tour at Twickenham.

They did all songs from this album during the last 10 years, apart from Jig Saw and Dear Doctor.
Of course Jig Saw Puzzle would be nice to hear, but I don't feel at all that this album is neglected.
For instance Tattoo You was neglected in the entire 90s, apart from 2 tracks. There are much better examples of neglection.

Even those songs that were played weren't played very often as those from Sticky fingers and Let it bleed.

I agree about neglection of Tatoo yo though, but still Beggar's banquet is greater masterpiece that album.

But one should keep in mind that Beggars Banquet is an acoustic album. Only 3-4 tracks is electric rockers.
And Rolling STones don't seem to like to have too many acoustic songs at their concerts.
They kept it to 2 in 72/73, zero in 75/76, 2 in 81, 3 in the 90s, etc.

You’re right Erik, but have you noticed that Blondie has been providing a hell of a lot of back-up acoustic of late. I'm listening the Buenos Aires gig right now and his acoustic is almost as prominent as Keith’s electric during the It's Only Rock 'n' Roll intro!

Yes, Blondie plays a lot of acoustics. Yet, the songs doesn't have a rock'n roll tempo, or a disco tempo etc, I mean a tempo that Jagger can really "let go loose", like
Start Me Up, Satisfaction, Rough Justice, even Beast Of Burden etc.

Well Stray Cat blues rocks harder than anything The Stones put on disk,so they could play that one more often.Jig Saw Puzzle also cooks.

You are right Eric,it's hard to imagine The Stones playing Prodigal Son in front of 50 000 people of which half came to hear Start me up and Satisfaction.

If you were take away the four numbers from Beggars that they've performed on and off for the past couple of decades, you'll realise that there isn't really anything else off the album that they could feasibly perform in front of huge crowds. I can imagine Jigsaw Puzzle working, but would be surprised if Mick could even remember it! It's a hidden gem and I don't know, maybe it's best left there.

I went to one Licks tour show and it was in Columbus, Ohio. The album they highlighted that night was Beggar's Banquet. Not my favorite album, but of course I love it and I was happy. I was hoping for Some Girls, or God forbid Bridges To Babylon.

That's not the only material that they neglect. One more obvious example is Exile On Main Street which is generally accepted as their finest release. There are far more never and rarely played tracks on that album. The list goes on & on.

Between the buttons
Beggar's banquet
Exile on the main street
Tatto you

All of these

It's quite a list, but I'd like to add
Goats Head Soup.
Think about it 2 - TWO songs, has been played live (after 1973) from this awesome album.
But, I know that some of you don't Goats Head Soup. But I do.

+ Sticky Fingers and Black & Blue.
Let It Bleed is only missing "Country Honk".
It's also quite strange that the entire Bridges To Babylon has been played, apart from 3 tracks, considering it's such a new album.

Yep,Goats is great and deserves more attention.Still it's not one of their greatest classics and most popular album so I can understand why only a couple of songs from it are played.

GHS song to resurrect imo is Silver train
And has Hide your love ever been performed live?

About Beggars
Sure prodigal son is not a huge crowd teaser, but if they played Factory girl in 89/90...
No expectations on Four flicks is great
Parachute woman should be performed not once in a decade
Also straycat was played great during licks

Anyway I think the most neglected album among the greatest is sure Aftermath
