"Under My Thumb" by TTD'A - FEROCIOUS!

Just saw terence Trent D'Arby do UMT on SNL. Did his whole James Brown-like thang. And the only word that comes to mind is FEROCIOUS! Just tore it up! The snare pounding on the downbeat; straight on the '1'.All the moves; and then thye do a faux ending before he counts it back in, then just the guitars with drums and some splits. The vox go into "I was born in a crossfire..." now while the BU's are just going "It's allright, it's allright..". Terence runs up to the piano and pushes the man aside to pound out some boogie.
It was so cool. I am still on it. Only thing missing was a cape.

Any other times the Stones have been covered and almost been outdone? TYhe Stones themselves are notorious for doing a song better than the original; to make it their own. But it's very rare that they are outdone on one of their own. Just mentioned in another thread that as a 8 year old I liked GS better by GFR but I was ignorant back then so it doesn't count.
"Moonlight Mile" was done very good by Alvin Youngblood. Still the Stones version can hardly be called outdone..

In 1985/86 there was talk that TTD was considered to replace
Jagger - if Jagger would have become a Michael Jackson-like-solo-
superstar. I´m so glad that his solo career failed (financially
and except for Wandering Spirit mostly musically).

TTD was agood performer, though.

TTD'Arby is a gigantic Stones fan. I saw him do a show in a small club (actually the ballroom of a very old classic hotel) in LA for 500 people (tickets sold out in 5 minutes so he still had some fans) It was very late 80's I think. For the encore he did 2 or 3 Stones songs. This guy was such a fantastic singer and performer I have no idea why he never became super huge. Anybody know what happened.....

Yeah! I remember that. I think they actually played with him and Ronnie commented that he made Jagger sound a like a strangled chicken!

One (two actually) of the biggest disapointments. I've seen TTD twice in concert and had very high expectations. Because his records are awesome. But damn, those concerts sucked. Especially his band.... his friends from Italy...
Terrible concert, hopefully he changes his band.

Didn't he perform with INXS for a while after Hutchenge died?

I wish the internet existed back then-- I would have loved to see the fan reaction to that one, and also Keith's justification of it. It's such a beyond-ridiculous concept, and yet my bet is people wouldn't have minded much.

I think the INXS thing was just one big festival concert in Sydney. He did about 4 songs I think. I saw the video of that part. It was good but his personality was a bit too Strong. He should have toned down that excitement edge a bit, more cool...

I don't think any one here has yet said that this version of TTD'A is 'better' than the Stones. What does that mean anyway? I mean, how old are u?

Where?

I think that TTD is great live, but I never really got into his studio releases.

I would love to see this UMT!

Under My Thumb is a huge part of pop culture history..........it's iconic....it's a signature piece.....it's one of the most recognizable songs ever written........for anyone to try and cover it is a risk certainly ..but to infer....and I quote:

Any other times the Stones have been covered and almost been outdone? TYhe Stones themselves are notorious for doing a song better than the original; to make it their own. But it's very rare that they are outdone on one of their own.

Well.........excuse me...........but that's ridiculous.......this song is a highlight on the Rolling Stones magnificent resume.....and no one can ever out do them on this one..........they own it......next.

It sounds like you have never heard of this before. There were a few rumored replacements.

Sure I had heard it.
However, would it have worked? the answer is 'No'. Maybe they would of got an album out of it. 5 shows into a tour would have been it.

I stand with this
ITS MICK JAGGERS BAND

When Keith was bad off on heroin, Mick stood with him.

Let's be very grateful we didn't have to experience this change in the line up, we would of missed out on 5 or 6 albums plus the live stuff.

I'm glad that it didn't happen but,I doubt that Jagger owns the band by himself.I'm pretty sure he doesn't.

Well, in the Stones history books it can be read the
other way round...

Jagger does not own the band, he directs it, he manages it and he gives chuck leavall too much reign.

He is the most important part of the formula.

Brian, then Mick kept the band in the news, they were the interesting ones. Beautiful girlfriends, adoring fans, rockstar lifestyle, clothes, always a fav of the paparazzi....

Mick is the man, the tour de force..
