Basement News 39 failure

I think a lost chance. Dieter Hoffmann failed to make his most important issue (9 pages bootleg CD check review!) real good. Too many mistakes.

For instance:

- the 4CD San Francisco 05 is much better than good-very good, actually almost exc audience

- Brussels 76 is better than good

- NY 78 is worse than good-very good

- the important 1CD by DAC All Inside Our Crazy Dreams released months ago is missing!

The reader who does not have the CDs yet could think that NY 78 (good mono only) and the 100x better fantastic Frisco 05 tapes are of the same quality... That's really strange.

Could list much more mistakes here. Too bad, it seems he doesn't take his job seriously enough anymore.

The true collector is able to realise that a 1978 audience recording will/could sound much less than a 2005 recording made with state of the art equipment. Comparing a 78 recording with a 2005 one is a bit useless anyway. As for 78, most (all?) audience recordings are mediocre at best. This NY show is maybe a bit better than the rest and therefor good/vg.

Dieter IMHO is one of the few persons able to make these judgements because he listens to each and every CD that pops up and his judgements are fair. To say that he "doesn't take his job seriously enough" is way out of line after all he did for the collectors world!

Dieter's basement news is still my bible. If you're a serious boot collector, you'll need the magazine, it's a must!

Rumour had it that #39 would be the last but I see #40 is due in Oct 2006...

That's actually partly nonsense, sorry Wilco. Dieter Hoffmann did more than a great job for the Stones world, that's true. But I'm just reviewing BN 39 which is nevertheless a very important fanzine.

I agree that nobody expects 2005 qualities for 1978 recordings. But the check review etc. makes only sense if Dieter uses his quality grading system for ALL tours in the same way. And that's what he did very well actually in the past. He did unfortunately NOT do so partly in the new BN and that can confuse readers. I think there will be some people disappointed about the NY-CD because they expect a real (!) good-vg recording. Actually it's just good mono (if not only fair-good)! Also the 81 SBDs I have are far away from vg-exc or even exc quality.

Fair = very bad sound; fair-good = bad; good = okay for old tours; good-very good = average audience recording, nice for pre 1981 tours; very good = good audience; vg-exc = great audience recording; exc aud. = better than most soundboard.

I think rather than posting about a socalled "failure" you should contact Dieter and supply the feedback and info to him. Very few people have the energy to make 39 fan magazines. Dieter is surely the Salt Of The Earth when it comes to the Stones fan community, and we all owe him respect and a great thank you for his hard work.

Dieter is making a fan magazine (fanzine) called Basement News. The best ever bootleg and collector's information about the Stones. Plus the Schwarchbuch and Weissbuch (black book and white book). Highly recommended. He is not really on the web so you would need the printed magazine.

Dieter's basement news is my bible too!
But haven't received number 39 yet.
Anyone from Holland already got it?

No, I live in Holland too, and I haven't got it yet.
But I agree to Wilco and Bjornulf. Dieter did, and is still doing a great job. I am sure that my copy will arrive soon. I am also sure that Bjornulf knows how difficult it is to get your magazine delivered to your customers in a reasonable time.

I think that its best times as a "news"
mag are gone. You cannot keep up with the internet speed when making a
hardware "news" magazine. The latest issue (#39) is mainly about things
we already know (setlists). Today the news are out of time before it´s
being sent - because everyone knows it from the net. That´s a pity.

About #39: There is no personal comment from him about the "New" album
and of course the new tour (that means the playing AND, yes, the ticket
prices). I´m reading a lot of frustration in there, though he indicates
somewhere that he likes the album a lot. During former tours he was always
in a good mood about upcoming shows. It was always a good read. This time it´s "over-statisticated".

And the collector´s pages/tables (about the official "A Bigger Bang" releases
--> Promos, singles etc) I miss very much.

In the future BN should focus on tour reports and collector´s service as in the past.
Yes, and grading and describing the bootlegs is always welcome.
If he really does stop it it would be a great loss of printed paper in this technical
world of copy and paste.

Thanks to Dieter, he always did a great job with loads of time and
effort! I´ll subsribe it until the very last page. Keep it up!

Can you tell me if this issue is not a special about all the official releases related to A Bigger Bang???
I need a lot of info about promos and all that stuff and now perhaps is not in the new fanzine...
Well, I'll be waiting for the postman, but, please, tell me...
Thanks

Well, it´s basically in there..but not in the form it
used to be (Collector´s checklist). It´s at the end under
"Ofical releases".

Thanks for the info: it's a shame... one of the better years for the Stones in official releases....
A Bigger Bang - Double vinyl and CD
Rarities - Double vinyl and CD
A Bigger Bang - Special edition with DVD and slipcas
Streets Of Love - CD single, 7" and promo CDs
Rain Fall Down - CD single, 7", 12", a lot of interesting promos with more remixes
Oh No, Not You Again - promo CD single with clean version
Hurricane
Japanese new remasters....... and for sure, more things I don't find

The setlist of the tour are something that is abilable here: on internet (IORR,...) but GOOD information about releases is something that you ONLY can find on Basemente News...
