was reading the topic on the greatest lyric lines in rock:

lets go now for the greatest row of chords in rock.
emphasis on that they sound smoothly together, and are exciting as well

as a start I go for the main verse and the chorus of "summer in the city" of lovin spoonful.
any opinions ?

(no politics now i promise!)

This is one of those areas where you just an not beat the Beatles. "Here There & Everywhere", "In My Life", "If I Fell", "Strawberry Fields", "Penny Lane" etc

"...no longer shall you trudge 'cross my peaceful mind."

A great one is E-A-D-A.

This is the one used in "Cherry, Cherry" among others ("Thank The Lord For The Nighttime", "A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You", etc.) by Neil Diamond. Also, it's "What I Like About You" by the Romantics and "R. O. C. K. in the U. S. A." by John Mellencamp.

One that springs to mind is "Golden Slumbers/carry that weight/the end". The bit where it goes from carry that weight into 'the end', those arpeggios on the guitar, before it speeds up and all kicks off. The same sequence of chords is also in "you never give me your money" earlier on the same album.

I LOVE that bit, just sounds great.

The 12 bar blues pattern is really the blueprint for so much of what we listen to - pop, blues, rock, etc.. I I I I IV IV I I V IV I V

There are also a couple of common country patterns. I IV I V I IV I V I, for example. Just knowing these two patterns - 1 blues and 1 country lets you play hundreds of songs. Also, the D A G D pattern of Dead Flowers is very common.

The standard 12 bar blues!! Still the best.

The old 12 bar. You can't beat it! But beyond that progression I would list among my favorities "Under My THumb" THe chord sequnece works very well on this song and I especially like the coda from he '69 live version. Pratically anything by the Beatles ranks up there aswell. Hell, my list could go on and on...

When it comes to classic power chords. . .got to have Boston in the mix. How about 'Peace Of Mind' or 'More Than A Feeling' or 'Rock n Roll Band'. Boston practically invented the 'power chord' and that layered guitar sound that gave the 80's some legs (not a big fan of the 80's, but some of it was good)

You got to roll me. . .

The end of Zep's Stairway - "and as we wind on down the road"- has to be at the top.
Simple, yet monumental.

Powerchord riffs are not really chord progressions, but there is probably a grey area there.

Keith's ballads have some great progressions, All About You, Make no Mistake, Thru and Thru. Similarly Nearness of You.

Powerchord riffs not chord progressions? I beg to differ!

There's no right or wrong answers here I think. It's all subjective, isn't it?

I know some think its cheesy, but I love Mick Taylors "Baby I Want You." Also "All About You" is wonderful, as is Sympathy (simple but moving).

For blues, but not the usual 12 bar, Black Limousine is a nice change. Wild Horses is beautiful, and Beast of Burden is, albeit very different. I dont think ive heard a song that sounds like BoB.

BoB doesn't even sound like BoB anymore. It's now "beast of bottle," with an entirely different riff.

Time Is On My side (Esp. during the bridge)

Beast Of Burden is one of my all time favorite songs period so of course I have to put that one down.

Down In the Hole Is interesting.

Stevie wonder's "I was Made To Love Her" has a cool chord progression.
