Better tour: 1981 or 1982...
Posted by: tomk ()
Date: March 30, 2006 09:31

After looking over photos and videos and playing boots,
I'm not sure which tour I think was better. Any thoughts?
For the record, I was at 2 shows in '81, but I think
the stage outfits were better in '82.
Some spotty shows and some great shows from both tours to be sure.
What do you think? Post those concert photos if you have 'em.

Before you go into orbit, some people hate the '82 "look".
I thought it was better than '81, so I mentioned it.

I can judge only from boots, unfortunately! I was 14 and wanted to go to Naples and see them. No way I could: I was completely broke at the time and my parents were ... beatles fans! I can remember as if it was now their arrival at the caselle airport of torino (it was on TV): it was the first time I actually saw the stones not on photographs or lp covers! God did keith look like a dead man walking!

Anyway, from what I hear on boots, I prefer the european leg, and Naples is the one I prefer (as if I actually was there).

ok, based on outfits alone (take that, stonestod!), 1981 takes the cake!

Í can also only judge by the boots. I would go with '81, no question about it. I love Ernie Watts sax sound and i absolutely love Mac's playing so for me it is a easy choice. I also get the feeling that on every they get very sloppy when they hit Europe.

1981 by far.Other than Chantilly Lace & Angie,1982 shows were just shortened versions of the '81 concerts.

The diehards on this board have probably seen this picture a thousand times....but I thought I'd share it anyway. From what I'm told, there were about 350 people in attendance....a very small warm-up gig for a HUGE tour.

The Rolling Stones at Sir Morgan's Cove - Worcester, MA
(A little more than a week before the '81 tour officially started in Philly)

Thanks for the pic, never saw it before so i'm probably not a diehard :-)

I read in Mac's book that it was a cool warm up gig. The stage was really small, they had no PA and Stu and him couldn't even see Charlie because there was a pile of amps in between them.

Cheers,
Wuudy

If you want to read something really cool about their time at the '81 rehersal (Long View Farm, North Brookfield, MA) check out this link [www.studiowner.com] then click on the link to the stones story "Tatoo Me". Lots of cool info!

81 couldn't possibly have been as sloppy as 82.

In fact nothing could!

I'm researching that very question, Peterdv. I'm a HUGE '81 Tour fan as well...my favorite era of the Stones (although many people in the forums here disagree with me). I'll let you know if I find the book...I'd love a copy myself.

The band sounds raw and grungey as they should, but as with '75 Jagger was to my ears disappointing, weirdly disconnected from the songs he sings and frequently out of breath. Also, Is "Shattered In Europe" slightly sped up or did they just play like that?

smile: glad someone else has discovered how very cool that site is!
if you click the "feedback" thing on it, you can ask the author about buying his book.

local27

sssoul; ok i'll inquire on the feedback :-) i thought about doing that yesterday but didn't want to disturb the site owner for that matter but it seems the most logical thing to do

Local27
81 is the best tour ever , ok, let's say that 72 was a bit better, but from all other tours 81 all over and with all those sdb's being released (and i have been told that still other sdb of 81 will surface troughout this year) its a dream coming true :-)

cheers
Peter

:-(( no luck with the feedback button,
it just allows you to enter your name and email address and then a message occurs if you want to upload stuff..

maybe Local27 has more luck..
