New Issue of Blender- Silly Stones Reviews

Anybody catch the latest issue of Blender with Dave Chappelle on the cover? They did a review of the 1980's-now Stones albums, including solo stuff. This columnist, Jody Rosen, is being a total bitch and basically tears the albums apart and picks on the boys as much as she can. She makes the assumption that Tattoo You and 40 Licks are the 2 best since 1980, and that might be the case, but everything else she just basically craps on. She puts Bridges to Babylon next to Dirty Work and says that B2B lacks any good songs, that all of Mick's solo work is monstrous, says No Security is pointless and that Theif In the Night is substandard.
a few quotes...
"the Stones have nine live albums, but few are worth much."
"(Steel Wheels) taught the Stones a band lesson about relying on their past"
"tattoo was their last great record"
she even says "wyclef jean, every whitey's favorite rapper", which i found to be pretty offensive.

this is the same magazine that placed mick jagger and david bowie in their list of the worst artists of all time.

i know some of her saysing are what ppl on this board say, but she's just quite rude about it and makes Mick out to be this obnoxious @#$%& who lacks any talent, and that their 90's efforts were pointless. Both of which i disagree. My personal fave Stones album is Bridges and I think Micks' last 2 solo efforts are the best solo efforts of any solo Stone, imo.

Substandard??I'll give her substandard. This is slander. What type of music did she listen to in the '80's?Who does she listen to now?

This is just me, but i've listened to most of Micks solo efforts, and i've never felt too strongly for them. neither did most of the critics.

ill put some quotes:

"She's the Boss is a good record, but it's not great. Just Another Night, Lucky in Love are kind of catchy songs, but the album does not have much personality, not much depth. It pales in comparison to Keith's first solo effort."

"Mick Jagger's first solo outing is now a very dated 80's relic. Not without its charms but difficult to take seriously."

On Primitive Cool: "This waste of plastic effectively shut the door on Mick's dreams of being a Sting or Michael Jackson solo star. He should be slapped for the "Let's Work" video."

Also, No Security was pretty pointless, even Mick said so.

I respect your opinion, but I will take on a bit of severity for this rebuttal, as i am a big fan of the magazine. they placed mick and bowie in the list for worst musicians who took stabs at acting. no music magazine in their right mind would dare treat mick or bowie like that.

I wonder what music she listsens to. I actually don't think she listens to any music. I think she just hates it all.

No Security could not have been pointless regardless of what Jagger said.Since it was released, there was a point to it.That's just a different term that is used so they don't have to keep using the same words. They put the cd out & people (not as many people as they had probably hoped) enjoy listening to it.I'm sure that was the point. The question then becomes "how good is it?".Why do people feel the need to attack great live versions of superior songs like Sister Morphine etc. when there is plenty of other music out there that they should worry about attacking first.

Right on. No Security is awesone. People complain about Stones playing the same songs over and over and releasing same songs on live albums over and over, and yet No Security is "pointless". Doesn't make sense. It has awesome performances.
And Jagger dismisses everything in hindsight anyway.

No Security: the second-best stones live album, ever. Sister Morphine, The Last Time, Flip the Switch . . .

ruined only by Memory Motel.

I would put Mick on a list of worst solo artists.

I think No Security has a cool cover. It's different and unique. I'm tired of rock bands using women as sex objects. Show the real deal: 2 Stones fans who've been out there for a while and have probably lived an interesting life. Don't put some dumb blonde who only knows Start Me Up b/c she hears it on MTV every now and then.

It's mostly in comparison to the Stones.Does John Denver have an album as strong as Wandering Spirit?
