The 81 "band"
Posted by: RoddyD ()

Have heard a few boots of the 81 tour.

Whilst I appreciate them from an historical perspective, and obviously NOTHING makes up for actually BEING there, god, they were bloody awful in those days. I lke my Stones ragged alright, but these boots show they were ragged AND sloppy. Jagger's vocals in particualr were rushed and breathless...

Today's Stones (from Steel Wheels tour I'd guess) are ragged and LOOSE and just get the balance right!

To my ears anyways...

I respectfully disagree. I really like their sound from this period. I like Ernie Watts contribution. The use of sax on songs that didn't have any before or since was cool. songs like You Cant Always Get and Beast of Burden. I like jaggers vocals, sounds like hes having a lot of fun. everyone sounds good. Overall I like the 81 stones. also I heard a boot from 81 in philedelphia. they sounded pretty ragged, in a good way.

The very last time they actually "toured" (meaning working hard at promotion) behind an album. Not since have they been at that creative and commercial peak.

The Stones now are a good greatest warhorse band, but I feel sorry for folks who didn't get to seem them when they were still a "working" band. 1981 was the last Great tour...No way around it. Everything since has been coasting tours.

the '81 versions of Lets Spend the Night Together and Under my Thumb alone refutes Roddy's post.

theres a certian edge thats gone after 81 for sure, but

Coasting? I just dont see it that way. they play the hits, deeper album cuts and 4 new songs. shows average 2 hours. sounds like a working band to me Jimmy!

Got LSTNT and Hampton DVD, haven't played either in ages, I'll ahve a look see tonite to 'clarify' my thoughts, but the boots (audios) that I have been listening to over past few days are just painful, sorry to say.

I think maybe peeps thinks that because they LOOKED cool in 81, they were, but I think that whilst they LOOK like r'n'r, but played awfully.

Ain't no sunshine....affecting me matey!! BUT...it MAY be my age!!! Though, listening to Rambler off the Unreleased Decca album LOUDLY, and thinking "I am in Stones Heaven", seems to make me think my faculties are all right!!!

The Stones were superior in'81, but they died shortly thereafter.
They were already on their way down in the publics eye, but this was the stake in the heart.
They haven't been the same since.

Bill officially quit in 1993. I thought you said you were 19?

Well 1981 provided an abundance of songs played live from their previous 3 albums in only a 3 year period, Some Girls,Emotional Rescue and Tatoo You:

Miss You
Beast of Burden
Shattered
Imagination
Let Me Go
Hang Fire
Start Me Up
Waiting On A Friend
Little T and A

Whereas later tours only have a smattering of semi-recent tracks from albums spaced decades apart (barely 6 new studio albums in 25 years....) Not a good track record.

Plus When The Whip Comes Down, She's So Cold, Neighbours, Black Limousine (and Tops played three times).

Rock music doesn´t get ANY better from 81 tour. They looked like rock n rollers.
NOW?
Now they play adult rock, and also dress like that.

Tight as hell? Respectfully disagree...

And in my opinion the worst version of YCAGWYW ever...

But Beast Of Burden, Miss You, Under My Thumb , going to a Go Go and the superb version of Time is on My side were super performances.

Great energy but too sloppy sometimes...

What bootlegs did you listen too? They had some sloppy concerts, yes. But most were awesome. Download Phoenix of Rocks Off and then say it isn't tight!!

All that plus Ian Stewart and McLagen on piano....couldn't get better.

Its just spectacle now. Jagger looks ridiculous but he's always looked that way.

I couldn't have said it better. Since the 1981 tour they have become a musical performance instead of a rock 'n' roll concert.

Don't you think its sometimes wise not to grow up.

Tight as hell? No. But, that's never been a particular strong-suit of this band, even on a good night. But, '81 was surely the last great, real rock'n'roll tour by the GRNRBITW.....like i've said before, if you don't agree with that, then you really just don't "get it" and you never will...
