They are a superb band. Between Ford, Gorman and the keyboard man they assembled a topnotch band. And Chris a good singer. IMO their main, crucial weak spot is the writing. They do the Stones better than the Stones and Faces do it today but rememebr - it is ultimately a ripoff of sorts. And they are at their best when they do someone else's materia;l. But still - a finer band.

I don't see the BC as a rip-off. Sure, they do pay tribute to their "masters".
But I also see some originality in their song writing. Amorica is a great disc, and quite innovative too (sure southern was more "traditional"), but I must say that all the MFord discs are beauties.

Liddas I don't mean that the Crowes are a ripoff at all. They are really good. Whhat I mean thopugh is the concept is ultimately not their's. Not really that original. Of course one can make the argument that no one is original but IMO some are more original than others. I dig the Crowes.

Chelsea: you are 100% right. On the other hand that is what I like most about them: they do not pretend they invented rock and roll (as some of their collegues tend to do) they simply play - very well - the music they like.

The first two albums are the best, but I also like By Your Side from 1998 a lot. Go Faster is a great song for when you're driving down the road in a hurry, eager to get to a double date with Gary Glitter or a crack smoking contest with Whitney Houston, or wherever it is you're going.

jjflash73, as starter of the topic, and though I didn't mention it: yes, I had in mind active bands. Does anyone have the new DVD? Is it recommended? Too bad the only song they didn't include on the release was Loving Cup. Chris Robinson is such a great singer, listen to Bad Luck Blue Eyes or My Morninig Song. Amazing. Akin to the edge of Rod Stewart, yet fresher.
I think it takes a lot of guts to make all those covers. And bear in mind that the convers are basically for the shows, not for the albums. Think of Kravitz, he's got all those influences, yet besides American Woman he doesn't do any covers. And man, it takes some outstanding rock n' roll to outstone the Stones!

I think they suck and I think Chris Robinson is an arrogent jerk. I don't see them setting any concert attendance records anywhere. The 2nd best band IMHO is the reunited Creme...another band of old codgers that kick the shit out any bands 1/4 their age.

Yeah "Creme", what a great band

I saw them in London few weeks ago. Good but not great, and lousy sound. No way to call them "the second best band".

I don't know their work so well. Any CD you guys recommend?

You are right, Robinson is perhaps the most arrogant person I have ever heard talk in my life...

However what do concert records have to do with music???? I'd rather have the Stones playing like the Crows do now then them having this big stadium spectacle and playing the same songs every show and every tour. You can almost forget there is a band playing.

The dvd is highly recommended. Been to the last concert in Amsterdam and that was a "die hard " concert which I'm not. I also liked the first two albums the best. The dvd has a great setlist and above all great sound.

Not even close to being #2.

Black Crowes are pretty bad actually. They ripped off the Stones, Allman Brothers. Lynyrd Skynyrd, and every other great classic rock band who has paid their dues. They're almost as bad as Pearl Jam.

Aren't the Black Crowes that band with the lead singer wearing a feather in his heair with the song "baby I'm sure hot to handle" ???

Can you POSSIBLY THINK that is the 2nd best active band in the world, now, or ever ????

It's kinda sad to see that so many Stones fans actually dislike a true rock'n roll band as the Black Crowes. Like the Stones they pay their respect to their roots with playing covers at their conserts. Ok, the Stones don't do many covers nowadays, but they used to do it a lot, i.e. Chuck Berry. It's one of the few real rock'n roll bands left, at least that I can think of. Mark Ford is an extraordinary good guitar player. He reminds me of a certain exStone

The proof is in the pudding. Get all doubting heads around Shake Yer Money Maker and Southern Harmony Musical Companion. If people don't like them it's their loss.

last and only time i saw them was in 92 at the mosque in richmond..

i was pretty into them cause southern harmony musical companion had come out (one of my favorite records).. but the sound was way way too loud and it sounded pretty bad.. too distorted....

i've decided i'm willing to give them another chance!

if they tour with dylan this summer i will go..

To each his own... I wouldn't rank the Black Crowes in the Top 100 Bands of All Time, let alone the 2nds best band in the world today...
