Most annoying - Mick or Keith?
Posted by: Elmo Lewis ()
Date: March 25, 2006 00:56

Ya'll all know that I love the Stones, but some of MJ and KR's ways really irritate me.

Mick - that phony way he acts, so gay, so self-important. Calculating. In it for the cash (only). Wants to be Bono sometimes.

Keith - Why does he have to challenge Mick onstage? I liked him better pre-89 (much cooler), when he played the guitar more and posed/acted the part of Keef Richards less.

Still, Mick wins this battle.

Great & think-demanding question.
Gotta sleep on that.
Me as a sleepless rebel always lean on Keith;
but Mick's rationalism may tend to win today.
As a role model Mick's encapsulating (?) of feelings
lose by many horse-lengths to Keith's noble savage street-smartness.
Keith has won a war; against a heavy abuse.
...But, as I just said, have to sleep on that.

do mick and keith only do it for the money?
are they afraid, their pension might be too small?
i don't think so.
is it for the pure joy of playing good music?
i am no musician, but i imagine, it would be more
interesting to play more different tunes, than doing
"satisfaction" for over 30 years.
so what is it?
maybe the adrenalin-kick performing in front of
that many people?
we will never know.

Yeah, Love Mick , but he can do some annoying stuff once in a while. Like on worried about you when he goes "Step up here, play your gituar, yeah yeah." thats so cringey. I have to fast forward that part.

I love the Stones, but I'm annoyed that Keith doesn't seem to be as into as Mick. Keith let Mick write the vast majority of the songs on the last album and he lets Chuck be the band's musical director and leader. I'm happy he's still around and can play his guitar, tour and write a couple of good new songs (Rough Justice and This Place Is Empty), but it is bothersome he isn't nearly as involved as he used to be.

As much as I love the great man, hands down, it has to be Keith.

Why oh why does he not seem to be able to conduct himself for televised interviews these days? In these situations, the guy is just a bunch of cliché’s. The cackling, the waving of the ciggie and the absolute nonsense that he spouts. It's almost as if he's PRETENDING to be Keith Richards. Has anyone seen that interview he did for Dutch TV last year? That poor woman, I felt sorry for her. It was just embarrassing!

It's all such a shame. A few years back he seemed capable of giving a great interview in front of the camera. He's okay for magazines, but still...

It does indeed. Honestly, he has to be acting. It's unnecessary, we all know who Keith Richards is. He shouldn’t have to play up to it.

I'll give you TWO examples of great-televised Keith interviews. The one he gave for 25x5 and the '94 60 Minutes one. Compare that to the one he did for the same programme in '02. Is it the same guy?

Al -

I think sometimes people like KR become so enamored of their "image" that they almost can't help but become caricatures of themselves in public. I'm sure there's a real, genuine person in there that he personal friends and family know, but the rest of us just get to see the cartoon character....

Keith is too much of a cartoon these days. He was Cpt. Cool in the 70's early 80's. He was the best. @#$%&...he was the coolest of the cool. But nowadays he's somehow embarassing. Just my 2 cents.

I don't think Keith is embarassing these days. I think he's playing the interviews strictly for laughs, and as long as he amuses himself during them he doesn't give a @#$%& what people think. Good for him, I say. It must be terrible to answer the same questions over and over for 40-plus years, he's got to do something to keep from going crazy.

A very good post. I don't disagree one bit. I think theres always been somewhat of an "act" involved with his interviews, but it just seems to be more rehearded than ever these days. Maybe I have gone a little over the top with my previous comments, but overall, I think I'm right and my god, watch that Dutch interview if you ever get the chance.

noticed the same a few times...maybe he kind of HAS to go thru the motions a little to keep it together; maybe it's his way of being cooperative but guarding himself also...?

tv's a different medium; it's impossible to see it through Keith's eyes...over 40 years of often dumb, or at least repetitive questions with lights in his face...and the endless ten zillionth reporter...print or tv...44 years of limelight kinda big fame...juggled along with the ups and downs of family and other personal stuff...
someone want to guestimate a calculation of cumulative media contact there?
i can't count that high. it's part of the job and he's 'there' if the questioner really is, often...
wish i had seen the Dutch show; if it was a good journalist that was intelligent and easygoing and engaging and Keith agreed to do it, seems he shoulda come thru...
cause he does open up and sound more natural in print when he, face it, dosen't have to be a media clown with make up and lights and give a 'performance' of some kind or another...i love his print interviews...if someone develops a flow with him, he'll go anywhere with it...surprisingly open or intense as things flow...intelligent and sensitive and uniquely himself.
tv stuff generally is kinda way more dumbed down and ultra-hype by design...

i dunno...constant publicity 24/7 x 40 years plus...just for having a sandwich, somewhere or a crowd gathering, complete with papparazzi, even if he's with his kids, at a restaurant or anywhere in public at all...i know it all seems really glam to be a multi millionare carted about by staff and security...but i bet it's not that much fun a lot of the time...he has to deal with it somehow...put on a happy face...give 'em the quotes they're asking for for the same story he knows they're gonna write anyway...get on outta there into the next room or car?
or work assignment. only appropriate that keith starts every show... before anything else, when the lights go up, the big power riff hits and it's on with the show. good enough for me... not so annoying.

Mick and Keith traded places a few years ago.

In the late '70 through the 80's, everyone bagged on Mick, said he had become a "self-parody."

Keith was viewed as authentic, whereas Mick was considered a phoney.

At some point, the Keith-isms got a little old. He started to look like a self-parody.

And Mick got his act together, released a great album (Wandering Spirit), and pretty much took away ol' JB's title as "The Hardest Working Man in Show Business."

But I can't work up any anger about either of them. (I never liked it when fans took on Keith's crusade against Mick during the Talk Is Cheap era.) I love those guys!

And I wish I could see them sharing a mic on stage again....maybe the chorus of "Bye Bye Johnnie" perhaps?
