Yeah, best one is the L.A. 1973 version (18-01-1973) with Taylor on slide.

No expectations? I thought this was a thread about the setlist. Setlist caring is frowned upon so now I've got no expectations.

and with the subject of Nicky so active - a nice little tie-in...his work on this song is beyond description....

the thing is, I like talking and reading about set lists. After I got Four Flicks , and saw the stadium show, I had this revalation. I stopped being so anal about set lists and I learned to appreciate the stones in a NEW way, at a point when I didnt think that was possilbe. That show was all greatist hits and it totally ROCKED! my view on set lists today is informed on that experience. but I still find the discussion about them worth while. you can seperate the set from the show, one can be good , the other bad. And I find it interesting to go back and look at old sets.

Yeah, I really like that album. Its all really good to me. If I had to pick a top three from it, No Expactions wouuld be in it. Id have to pick Jigsaw Puzzle too. Maybe Stray Cat Blues as number three. I don't know though, its a hard one. every track is a stand out.

Great song, however did not like the way they played in 1973 at all. Much better at the R&R Circus.

The Stones could play No Expectations if they wanted to. But there would be one key ingredient missing: Brian Jones.

Nobody have mentioned the Hyde Park 69 version.
The groove is somewhat in-between ballad, country and rock. It doesn't really works. It's pretty good, but not very good.
R&RC68 and LA73 is better.

I love the Hyde Park version....Potted, do you have the 1973 version that you could post?

It's also on the Woodstock Rehearsals. It's a really cool version. Mick seems like he doesn;t care but the rest of the band is really good.

Brian's slide on the Circus version is KILLER...no other compares...Brian could slay ANYONE on slide back then...

I'm not convinced that what you hear on R&R Circus is Brian.... to my eyes and ears the whole "performance" of No Expectations looks mimed to a backing track, so I suspect that Keith may have played that part...

Ive seen the hyde park video and there is no no expectations. did they leave it out of the offical release or do I just have a bad memory?

It is on the CD. Real nasty, out of tune rythm by Keith and really dirty slide by MT.

Casino...watch it again......its BRIAN! The sound fits like a glove, and besides, Keith wasnt even playing slide at that time....

JEEZ....

No Expectations has always been one of my all time favorites. Saw them do it in Atanta on the '97 tour. It was the song voted for them to play via the web. Recently hear the boot of this show (thanks, Elmo), great version!

That was one of the biggest surprises I ever got at a Stones show. BTW, kienan, I can play this one. Chords anyway, not slide. Hope your trip south was good. Have you heard anything about Angel City? A biker/party town in between us (Unadilla)? April 22 show featuring Blackfoot, Wet Willie, and other southern rockers?
