Geez...

Listen to this guy on Derek & the Dominoes...

The Tulsa Hayseed Hick himself... Carl Radle.... he just brought out the very best in Eric Clapton, with all due kudos to all the other great bassists that slowhand ever played with...

No wonder E.C. is drawn to Southern U.S. bandmates! Duane Allman, Carl Radle, most of his new band on tour...

... Almost forgot... RIP Carl, u went way too young but you left some incredible music !!

Yes. Bill rated him highly too.

The entire cast on George Harrison's All Thing Must Past, Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs, Delaney and Bonnie and Derek are all the same 15 musicians, and it truly is magnificient what they achieved. It's really worthwhile to collect everything they have done.

I saw Carl Radle playing with Clapton during his 1976 tour. I recall a few years ago that Ronnie and Jagger were discussing Radle and his untimely death when Wood mentioned a correlation between Clapton and the death....Jagger cuts him off to avoid any further controversy. Anybody else remember this?

Hey Mr. Bayou, didn't you mention Carl Radle about a week ago? It was then that I linked to his "memorial" website and realized he died about 26 years ago. Why didn't anyone call me?

Seriously, I got turned on to him when I saw Concert For Bangladesh, when it first came out in the theaters.

And speaking of Tulsa, lets not forget Carl's former neighbors Leon Russell and JJ Cale, and the rest of the crew at Shelter Records. A hot bed of talent.

I think Carl also played on JJ Cales early album as well..

Yes, he sure did play on JJ's early albums, my asphyxiating friend from New England, and he played some on brother Leon's albums

Carl Radle was a great bass player no denying that from listening to the music and from all indications he was an even better person.

Check out this Carl Radle website:

Radle was great. So was one-time Clapton drummer Jamie Oldaker...one of the most easily-identifiable drummers of allt-time.

Whatever happened to Oldaker, (and John Terry for that matter)?

Carl took his own life ........... apparently because Clapton no longer wanted him in the band. I hope I remember this correctly.

The Bill Wyman interview in NME I do remember well. They were interviewing him at the time of Monkey Grip's release. He was asked which other bass players he rated highly. First off, Radle. Can't remember the others.

Radle - similar feel for the music as Bill, not wanting to obtrude. 'Knowing his place'.

Oldaker just released a new CD that features many guest artists including Clapton. Sounds good to me.

I don't think Carl's passing away had anything to do with EC not wanting him in his band - that's a new one to me. I think Carl was an alcoholic. Check out the website I posted above.

And the 2nd guitarists name during the 70's was GEORGE Terry not John. George is doing fine and gigs in Florida from time to time. He also recently released a solo CD.

If I remember correctly, Radle died of kidney or liver failure due to some kind of substnace abuse problem

My fave is his work on "Let it rain" and the rest of that first Clapton solo album.

Yes, George Terry. (I know someone called John Terry!)

YES - Let It Rain. And all the rest. So relaxed and unique, the way his bass just always had the feel of slightly following the beat. Well it did, really.

I thought the onset of 'abuse' and his ommission from Clapton's band were linked?
That was the story I read. More than a rumour, but not necessarily true ofcourse. But then why would Jagger get touchy on the subject if it was not a sensitive issue?

Wasn't Derek & the Dominoes "star-crossed" in some way...

I remember Robert Stigwood said they'd be dead in six months.

Carl Radle died and I think Jim Gordon either died or had a serious psychiatric breakdown...

Duane Allman also died in a motorcycle crash.

Gordon's serving a life term for killing his mother

Unless I'm really off the mark, I thought Radle died from a heroin OD at 37, circa 1980. When I was working at a used record store in Cambridge I remember seeing an album by a band he was in before Delaney & Bonnie - he was in the group shot on the cover, the record appeared to be from around '67, but I can't recall the group's name.

He was only doing what "the voices" told him too!

What a loss, he was another great one!

If Gordon were available, an almost-reunion of Derek & the Dominoes would be possible, given Derek Trucks is now playing with Clapton. Whitlock is still performing (well, from what I've heard)....

Is Gordon eligible for parole? At least this time there would actually be a Derek in the band!

I seem to recall his parole board turning him down in recent years....just as well - probably can't play worth a shite anymore anyhow....

I TOTALLY remember this--it was in Rolling Stone--Ronnie, as you note
makes the correlation and then Mick points at the tape recorder and Ronnie gets the message.

Talk about jogging memories--good one.

bought a special 3 cd set edition of derek and the dominoes
in the early 90s.
cd 1 the original album, cds 2 and 3 jam sessions.
lots of noodling, not everybodys cup of tea, but worth a listen.
must check this one out when back home.
