Hey Baboon, sorry to hear that.
Amsterdam is a very social place, but, yeah , there are also thieves. Even as a local I was robbed once. You know why? Cause I spoke french on the street. Hope it didn't get too ugly. Just go back to Amsterdam. Try again, really it's worth it.

The last thing you want to happen there is to be caught with your hands down and a stoned Thai hooker pointing a loaded banana in your face. I say don't make the trip alone and always make sure to go dutch on everything.

First: Two scumbags put a knife to my throat while takin' a peaceful p*ss
behinf thge Central Station. Second: A pimp-like bugger took my travelling
bag, luckily empty at the moment. The scumbags got like 5 or 10 Gulden,
so it was not much I lost. But a bad experience; and it got me awake...
Not more than I got robbed next year again, in Leningrad that time.
Later I had a girlfriend from Amsterdam; so I'm no fundamentalist
on the matter grinning smiley...

Quote from Pulp Fiction:
"You can't just walk in to a restaurant and blow the joint, start puffing away. They want you to do it at home, or certain "does-it-in"-places".

Baboon Bro,

Glad you came out of it intact. Sometimes things turn out differently.

When you live in the city as opposed to the suburbs you tend to be more observant of your surroundings. We lock our doors and cars everytime day and night. You just can't trust people. I remember on my many visits to New Orleans to be on the lookout for pickpockets. Usually gangs of black kids working teams. Once I stopped and stood against a building watching some of these kids standing around trying to blend in, meanwhile they are sizing up all these gullible white tourists strolling up and down Bourbon St., many who had too much to drink. Looking for that bulge in the front or back pocket. Its amazing when you stop and observe.

Watch the eyes, the clothes they wear, their facial expression. Don't flaunt jewelry and wads of cash in public, especially in less than affluent areas. Rent cars that have local plates if possible. Always look for an out. Stay with the crowds.

Yeah, Mr. Baboon, scary story. I'm glad you only lost a bag and money, it could've been worse, but you gained wisdom from the experience. All in all, you may have actually come out on top in these encounters.

The Coffee shops allow it. But technically it is illegal for the proprietor to initially buy the drugs. But I have never encountered a problem. Just nice ordinary poeple having a puff.

But I was mugged in a back alley in the red light district. So be careful. Especially of Algerians hanging about at night. If you are mugged do not resist. They carry knives. But don't be put off. Amsterdam and the red district is great.

On a lighter note I saw a guy walking around the city with a carpet rolled up over his shoulder. He said when I've got enough money I'm going to leave this place on my flying carpet. But I keep spending it on drugs.

Avoid the varying forms of skunk. They will blow you away.
